Their depth comes from the diversity of musicians they recorded with. They are basically a two piece, with a ton of the best hired guns to compliment each song. The Aja documentary gets into it in detail. I grew up on them, and am very familiary with De La Soul...there's more of us than you'd imagine!

Steely Dan is a rabbit hole 6 miles deep....and every inch is glorious. It consists of 2 central characters, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker; they wrote all the music, Fagan did all the lead vocals. They were almost OCD artists, never compromised in creating exactly what they heard in their heads. As a result they would audition one top notch studio musician after another to get the perfect match on a given part of a song. Guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocals, horns, everything. For the guitar solo in Peg they tried 7 different players, all top session men, including Larry Carlton, who worked on a number of their songs, until they settled on Jay Graydon's version. They tried 3 different drummers, including Jim Keltner, for
the title cut of the Aja album before settling on Steve Gadd. His solo on that track is legendary

No missed beats just the Pinnacle of... Musicality and Musisionship... NO One will ever out do or replace that which they created. Might I suggest, Kid Charlemagne, Hey Nineteen, Don't Take Me Alive, Bad Sneakers, Dirty Work, Deacon Blues, Pretzel Logic... on and on... Harri, Thank You... For being You....

I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time.

This is imo the original dark song w/a light hearted beat as cover. In the 80's it was telling people how dirty and sorted the p0rn industry was. Steely Dan musically is the best in the world, I think just about every rapper of note sampled SD; for good reason they made sure all of their stuff was as tight as possible. They brought in the best session musicians to fill out the group and create masterpiece after masterpiece. I've seen music theory teachers use them as examples in their classes. They worked their asses off to make every song perfect.
I loved De La Sol one of only a handful of rap groups to survive into the 90's that were gangsta rap.

    O
I'm a Steely Dan guy. But De La Soul was one of my favorite Hip Hop groups. "Eye Know" is a great tune. The whistling sample is from an Otis Redding tune. Who's my favorite vocalist of all time. And the drum beat is from "Get Out My Life Woman", written and produced by the late great Allen Toussaint. Maybe my favorite producer of all time. So "Eye Know" just hits me deep in my soul. Love that tune.

SD had many good songs, but if I could choose one banger to pitch - “King of the World” is extra good !

Steely Dan are a Steely Dan band. "Cant buy a thrill" was the soundtrack to an insane trip to Cornwall in 1989.
Damn, once their thing gets in your head there's no going back. "Aja" is my all time favourite.
    Peace ✌

By the way, the backing vocals are Michael macdonald from doobie brothers fame...steely dan is essentially a studio musician band, the best . In the late 70s there was blue eyes soul, white man soul i guess where you had the jazz pop feel with great hooks

A very common fallacy for most folks is to try to label this group, but a “ jazz-funk” group is a good start. Let’s just say is ...”Steelygood “.
Thank you for your honest reaction...😎🤘🏼

There is a song on Robben Ford Album “ Talk To Your Daughter” named “ HelpThe Poor”
Which has a great “ Billy Jean “ type intro. Check it out ! BTW, Ford is an incredible guitar player solo on “Help The Poor is pure hot blues !

Donald Fagan's "The Night Fly" album will blow your mind. Every track is fantastic. Not many albums like it Paul McCartney's "Ram album" "Heavy Weather" album by Weather Report featuring the legend bass player Jaco Pastorius. Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book" "Innervisions" "Hotter than July" albums.
These albums are the GOATS without doubt
"Herbie Hancock" has a couple, an ""Earth Wind and Fire" that could fit in that list too.

Yup, Steely is beyond any simple categorization. If you're looking for the most 'rock' like song, I'd suggest 'Show Biz Kids' on the strength of the awesome slinky slide guitar that drives the song from the first few bars. It's like a 'guitar' solo that just happens to run from beginning to end.

Any quality musician would be happy to sample from Steely Dan. The session artists playing for them were always eager to be there.
