That's how a pro does it. One of the things I've learned when watching this series is that if you are in a hurry, you are doing something wrong -> Slowly does it. Thanks for a great video, once again! 👍
Very good. Video in the upper corner really helps. If you ever do this again I really appreciate it if a rudder indicator would also be in the picture somewhere.
Having been sailing for over 40 years, and 25 years skippering charter yachts in the Greek Islands almost every marina is a stern to mooring with the added practice of dropping the anchor or picking up a buoy, a bow thruster is definitely a plus especially in windy conditions and in some very busy marina’s you may have to moor up 3 or 4 boats out, added to this is the drama of anchor chains been crossed with other vessels again can be an added drama when leaving, my little tricky devise is an anchor trip which lifts other chains up retrieve your anchor and drop the others back into the water and exit, most happens in busy and congested marina’s, but all good fun and most other skippers are usually very helpful.
You know the guy is good when he makes it look so easy and undramatic. This stuff takes practice, but with this video people know which maneuvers to practice on. Also, the boat looks slick - Love Marex!
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost my login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me!
one thing is that your are good at controlling the boat.. but you are also VERY good at explaining what you are doing ! good video and very good video editing also !
Things I have learned from this series. SLOW. Stay calm. SLOW. Neutral, Steer THEN power. SLOW. This has been amazingly helpful in learning to captain a 31' craft.
Thank you!! There are a plethora of videos showing how to dock twin engine boats and boats with bow thrusters but this is the best one I've seen for single engine docking. I'd love to see some more with the wind blowing from different directions.
Jon makes it look so easy. First time I did this I walked the back of my boat at the back and hit something or other at the front, no damage caused but taught me to leave well alone and to someone who knew what they were doing!
I enjoy it to see how you people do it. I sail for 4o years now stolt nielsen and chell😉 first at sea and now rivers rein and danube all kind off ships. Nex year new passenger ship 135 m 15b at 220 t nice to see. Gr and enjoy
In kayaking its called ferry gliding and this is how I birthed my 62 narrowboats in heavy winds, nicely done :) to me knowing where your pivot point is in anything give you the know-how to turn.
As an owner of a “single sterndrive no bowthruster boat” I would love to learn some tricks and for a crosswind situration. Maybe with the use of springs and Lines.
Practice is something that takes time. A single screw boat with wind and tide working against each other is a challenge but can be done. You can always try a second time if you need to, patience does pay off.
Hi V helpful thank you ... out of interest what sort of wind speed was it... I am out this weekend in 20kts for the first time - single screw prop shaft any advice thanks..
Hi, Nice videos, very helpful . I see a lot of them , thanks! I should Dock Stern in, at a riverside marina , there is 2 poles 35 fot from land that i have to pass between backwards…even with bowthurster i struggle so i go bow in, do you have any tricks or tips on how to do it.. The river is slow moving, 2-3 kt or so, brackish waters. Thanks.
Is there such a thing as a bow thruster that you can leave running a tiny bit while you leave the boat to tie up in order to keep crosswind from pushing you into a neighboring boat?
i havent got a boat but loved every minute for informative value alone, when a pilot sets a plane down nicely, people say 'Nice Landing' whats the appropriate term for parking a boat and do some models have parking sensors and auto park?
So do you always want to back in with a single prop? I am going to be involved with a 32' single engine built in the 70s with no thrusters, so I am nervous about docking. I definitely would appreciate more scenarios.
Nicely done but you had an outdrive . It’s completely different with a fixed shaft drive . All that wheel spinning does nothing . I’ll watch for the next video about a true single engine shaft drive , no thruster! ( that’s what I have!) cheers warren
warp21drive: with yours it’s more about initial set up. Where you place the boat at the start of the process, it all flows from there. Knowing the prop wash and the way the stern kicks when astern. If you use these components to your advantage rather than fight them you are 75% of the way there.
Hi Jon thank you for this, it was very clear and instructive. A question from someone who's only experienced sailboats ; I'm guessing when you're in neutral the boat almost don't respond to the steering, and you need to get the propeller to turn a little bit for the boat to start turning, is that right? Thank you!
Stern drives don't have rudder, but instead require the whole leg on a stern drive to turn and at the same time the prop has to be operating to be able to turn the boat.
That's the easiest way to berth the boat, it will hang like a flag in the breeze. Going stern in on the opposite side, with wind (or tide) on the bow is trickier, or with a decent cross wind blowing you off your berth. As well presented as it is, this is ideal conditions.
Of course you realize that you are spoiling the great fun of watching nitwit boat owners crashing their boats into the slip. Anyway nice job, I’m a sailor boy and these maneuvers are the trickiest things you have to do all day.
Do you have any propwalk? Do you have any rudder or is it just a prop on a leg? This type of boat handles far differently than a traditional single propped boat that has a fixed proppler ahead of a large rudder
Graham Hunter The boat probably has two counter rotating props on the outdrive. So there is no prop walk as they cancel each other out. With an outdrive you have very sharp controls even at low speed and in reverse.
Yeah, strange hey, also worth noting that many different skippers do thing a few different ways, but from the dock, you only notice the vessel ,but not how the skipper controls his vessel.
Agree... my boat uses cable steering and the steering wheel is very heavy it doesn't have power steering. So big challenge to turn the wheel very quickly.
Stern-in method? Best practices?? So you should park the boat the way you found it? That means that if it was done wrong you should perpetuate that? Except for bow thruster boats, forward movement provides much better control of the boat than backing in. If stern in makes more sense, how?
Yeah. No problem in that $$$$ boat. I dare you to try this with my 1984y boat with controls that take a power slap to move them, and strong hand to revers it. This is like teaching how to park a car with parking sensors😁 try this with rusty old boat. Yeah, yeah i know...buy a better boat👍
That's how a pro does it. One of the things I've learned when watching this series is that if you are in a hurry, you are doing something wrong -> Slowly does it.
Thanks for a great video, once again!
👍
I love seeing people who is realy good in what they do, do their thing. This is so satisfying to look at.
Jon explains everything so simply that even someone with little or no experience can understand!
As someone new to boat life, this is really valuable. Thanks, Jon for the great videos, your calmness is reassuring.
Very good. Video in the upper corner really helps. If you ever do this again I really appreciate it if a rudder indicator would also be in the picture somewhere.
Always awesome to see the ol' skipper, Jon Mendez.
What a legend.
+Motor Boat & Yachting,
I think the humour in this video; is irreplaceable. Totally humbling; Nice One Mr Mendes.
Fantastic series.
Wish my steering and throttle controls were that smooth! Amazing talent on display here. Lovely boat too!

I’ve got a tub of a 20’ boat with a 200hp outboard, tricky to maneuver in close quarters. Thanks for the great lessons!
Best teacher on the net! :)
An example in docking in optimal conditions. Just an FYI to new captains. All this will go out the window when adding current and a decent wind.
Lol, exactly 😃
In my slip, by the time he finished tying up the stern, the wind and current would have pushed the bow into the neighbors boat.

Brilliant base principles to get the job done follow this can't go far wrong wind and tide are all you gotta get and it goes well from there
In kayaking its called ferry gliding and this is how I birthed my 62 narrowboats in heavy winds, nicely done :) to me knowing where your pivot point is in anything give you the know-how to turn.
Beautifully executed.

He did a better job without the bow thrusters in the first run. nicely done.
great boat handling. wish I had this control and confidence. Practice practice practice
Really good explanation thank you
Beautiful boat. Great skills.
excelletn, always something to learn or refresh what you are supposed to do, berthing in wind is my least favourite thing,
love your uploads.

Absolutely nailed that!
Lots of neutral.....wheel before throttle.....great advice !! 👍
I’m good at parking cars but he did that more smoothly than I can park my van at the local shops!
Awesome Docking!
Great video for new boatie 🎉🎉
Great video. I can’t wait to get my captains license and get back on the water
Great lesson. Need one for my inboard shaft config. No outdrive to help direction.

you make it look ridiculously easy !
main learning point use the wind as your friend if you can.
He is a treasure!
Can we have a video on how to setup the lines when stern to berthing using the rear winches
i havent got a boat but loved every minute for informative value alone, when a pilot sets a plane down nicely, people say 'Nice Landing' whats the appropriate term for parking a boat and do some models have parking sensors and auto park?
People often will say "nice poop" as ships were traditionally docked and piloted from the poop deck
Omg.
So do you always want to back in with a single prop? I am going to be involved with a 32' single engine built in the 70s with no thrusters, so I am nervous about docking. I definitely would appreciate more scenarios.
Great teacher
Learn to berth a single engine with no bow thrusters and you can dock anything.
Thanks Useful as always
That was amazing.

LOL you might want to just park without the bow thruster, you made it look easy. The second time seemed like it took you even more time.
He was overdramatising for the video on purpose.
A great Marex 310 !
You are a magician
It looks so easy. ☺️
I like re-watching the how to series occasionally. I always seem to pick up something new. Many thanks Jon.
Is that a bow thruster too?

I'm glad my boat has 2 engines and a bow thruster. My favorite passtime is practicing parallel parking at the fuel dock

Thank you sir for this vedio

“I just happen to be on my own” he says while looking into the wobbly cameraman’s eyes haha. Sorry, amazing tips, I just had to get it off my chest
How to: Birf like a BOSS. :)
🤣😂🤣😂
Perfect lesson
Good nice done.👌
Nice tutorial, tnx! And a nice boat 🙌🏻 which one is it?
Thanks Gregor - we used a Marex 310 Sun Cruiser for this video
Well done!

How do you dock a boat in a crowded marina when the wind is a blowin? Sloooooooowly.
What boat is that? Such a beauty!
It's a Marex 310SC - here's our review: ruclips.net/video/WcJ89kMZslA/видео.html
nice
Like a boss!!!
What type of boat are you using and what model? Marex? 31 feet I think I heard but it looks far bigger?
Yep, it's a Marex 310 Sun Cruiser, we did a full test drive review a few years back: ruclips.net/video/WcJ89kMZslA/видео.html
I think, this one is a stern drive. Not a shaft drive.
This is different to what I've seen. The video I saw showed them going past the turn in then coming in from the other side into the wind/current.
Yeah, strange hey, also worth noting that many different skippers do thing a few different ways, but from the dock, you only notice the vessel ,but not how the skipper controls his vessel.
Docking that particular boat is 100% easier with digital shift and throttle. Doing with a non-linear cable connection is much harder.
Incorrect-cable driven throttle is more linear in my experience.
forget this video when you have a propellershaft and a rudder.. this is a sterndrive
Always approach a dock at the speed your prepared to hit it at ⛵💨
Can anyone tell me what brand dual shifter he has on this boat?
Single shifter for a single ENGINED BOAT this one.
if you are single crew when would you put your fenders out
Good question, we've got a whole other video on berthing single-handed: ruclips.net/video/KCFVHuu6TxM/видео.html
@@MotorBoatYachting thank you
What kind of drive is on this boat??
Stern drive, with a Volvo diesel engine.
watch this about ten thousand more times to get it right!!!lol
Let me see you do this with single engine shaft instead of ips drive
Can i pay Johns wages for a day and have some 1to1 training
You're in luck - he runs a training school: www.mendezmarine.co.uk/
Ha. How about with no bow thrusters please!
@Nigel Rowe LOL Thanks - I skipped fwd too far!!
I have a way smaller boat and if my steering wheel was that light berthing the boat would be so easy.
Agree... my boat uses cable steering and the steering wheel is very heavy it doesn't have power steering. So big challenge to turn the wheel very quickly.
Turning of the wheel(helm) is the least of one's problems when berthing expensive boats...
