I'm 40 and hope I can resemble anything near to Tommy, when I'm 60. To tell the truth, I was a huge Bruce Lee fan before I met Tommy, but since I know Tommy, I became a fan of Tommy.

Great interview with a true legend Tommy Carruthers. If you've never been to a seminar, or met this dynamic teacher, then you really haven't experienced efficient, explosive JKD that truly continues the technical street fighting art Bruce was training up to his death. I have trained with several JKD instructors all certified, nothing came close to this mans knowledge & ability. His online lessons, are a great teaching tool as well.

Tommy’s still an incredible human specimen - just turned 60 and fast and strong as ever. The guy never stops. Inspires me, for sure!

Derek Chin agreed 110%. The man deserves serious credit for pursuing & dedicating his life to JKD. Very impressive 👍

I've had the honour of meeting TC when I attended one of his seminars in Glasgow. He's also taught me much about boxing as well as JKD. I saw him just before his 60th and he looked in phenomenal shape not just for his age, for ANY age! His footwork was deft and fleeting. Not only that , he has developed some brilliant students. We did some drills on the kicking shield and there was one student whose kick was like a mule - this was a female student only 5ft 3in in height and I could just about handle her power such was the force of the kick. There were 2 other guys whose kicks were so hard that I did not look forward to holding the sheild for. TC mentioned to me that he had trained his son to such a level that he could break a persons ribs through the sheild! I was so glad that TC did not get us to hold the sheild for him! I never saw him kick that day but saw it through his students. He's the real deal and Glasgow and the JKD community are very lucky to have him.

Really enjoy these interviews.....Dwight always asks great intelligent questions which always explore the important issues in this JKD debate....To address the issues raised here rather than go off at a misguided tangent in some of the comments below (not Derek) is important here....Obviously we have to popularize Bruce's name to sustain his Art but we have to differentiate between Bruce Lee historians sustaining him as a cult figure & JKD practitioners sustaining his art as an ECONOMIC PRACTICAL form of self defence....The two are getting confused & conflated together & that is why cinematic productions are misrepresenting the functionality of the Art....In order to sell martial art to cinema audiences Bruce understood that Complexity LOOKED GOOD for the CAMERA....But this is NOT what is functional for the street . He developed that as a SEPARATE enterprise.. Many so called JKD practitioners are getting people killed by teaching movie moves which look good to an audience only......Dwight nailed it in THIS comment -'The Hollywood celebrity Bruce is better known than the Martial Artist Bruce'...So the impractical stuff is falsely being taken to be the art....We have to turn this around....Extravagant movement is being used instead of the ECONOMY required to finish fast....The way to do this is by having a regulated organization, economically backed up by the BL family...This would have to be achieved by creating a greater consensus on what JKD IS which might be difficult to achieve...It would have to be non profit, no money for certs corrupted, rank tested, quality controlled with a curriculum but with free space to change things if necessary. A new nucleus....Shannon has stated in that meeting that MMA is NOT JKD but she has later contradicted herself usually when promoting an MMA computer game with her Fathers image as one of the combatants bless her....With regard to Tommys drills, what people say on FB is just the tip of the iceberg & soundbite...Unless people see how all the links of the chain fit together they are evaluating piecemeal soundbite information & misjudging it...You have to see it in TOTAL context ..Sparring is not the centre of the Art or its crucible because its intensity is more Sport than real streetfighting...In Bruces demonstrations with protective gear he was like a cat stalking a prey suddenly rocketing for decisive targets..Watch the historical footage... Seeing fast is the key, the reflexes & firepower are USELESS unless one can set up the target (see fast)...As for below comments I wouldn't take Tao of JKD as gospel, they were just Bruce's posthumous notes edited by Linda into a publication. Just a time snapshot of his thinking which was subsequently modified by applying more economy later. Rehearsed rhythmic Complex trapping in the wake of an all out broken rhythm street attack wont work .... Not every fight is life & death requiring maximum force of course. But unfortunately in our society this is becoming an increasingly luxurious point of view although I would say that with power comes great responsibility.....The issue of arrogance & self confidence was raised here, well, it is a fine line of subjective assessment but sometimes Tommy defends his position out of passion. & that passion can sometimes be seen negatively by some...Tommy is just Tommy....Take him or leave him....But you cant deny his insight, analysis & teaching experience.....These issues relating to the survival of JKD as Bruce's REAL & BEST legacy are very important....To discuss this go & see Tommy at his address....If I can help or if folks want to make any suggestions to me to help preserve Bruce's art (although I'm just an Angelo Dundee, not a Muhammad Ali) they can contact me at walterevans197@btinternet.com or alternatively write to me at 5 Meon Close, Stone Cross , Pevensey, East Sussex BN24 5PZ,,UK....Thanks folks...Best wishes.

I would love to have a minuscule tiny amount of the skill and dedicated drive of the amazing Tommy Carruthers, not just because he's incredibly accomplished and Scottish, but the fact that he obviously loves what he's doing.

HI Dwight thank you for airing this it was refreshing .
You had me riveted to every word what a great presentation and inspiring guest in Tommy Carruthers. Many home truths ,so many pot bellied Karate guys wearing black belts its nauseating. An analogy is, pregnant at forty still pregnant at 60+" HUGE POT BELLIES" ,not an inspiration .Just dodging sit ups and eating junk food.On the JKD side a meeting to at least discuss much of what you mention is a start and you have to start somewhere. Its well overdue ,those that don,t attend can only look at their own conscience.

In order to be alive JKD needs sponsors and establishing a unified world structure. Same as in any sport or system. JKD isn't any different. It's a marketing and business problem, not a JKD problem.

From this interview I can tell Tommy does not understand Trapping and is low information on Trapping. Nothing fake about Trapping. There are those who know and those who think they know. Those who can and those who can't. Funny it's always the ones who can't who say it can't be done. I can trap in my sleep.
