Getting on for 25 years ago now and it's fair to say the whole area has deteriorated. The Tricorn was demolished in 2004 and to date all that has replaced it is a very expensive car park. Allders/Debenhams closed down taking away the major department store in Commercial Road. Then the removal of the food court within Cascades has created a featureless shopping mall. The success of Gunwharf Quays nearby was probably the final nail in the coffin for the city centre.
I worked in the tricorn from 1984-5..amazing place..it was really alive.I was sad to see it go..I'll never forget that area at that time..it made me happy.
It's great to look back on how things used to be. It doesn't seem that long ago, but you realise when you see the difference in people's clothes and just the way they are. x
The Ice Cube tray roof ceilings leaking water drips on your head and the Brutal concerete architecture of the Tricorn shopping centre. Those were the REAL memories of shopping in Portsmouth.
Very much so and we thought life was quick and ever-changing then which it was....little did our naive minds know what would hit us come 2000 and beyond. I was born in 1991 so can just remember Portsmouth like this well enough as I was a streetwise kid. Much simpler times.
Even ABBA couldn't save this footage from looking like a concrete nightmare, overcrowded and generally depressing...and that was 22 years ago. Its got a lot worse in recent years, you can't move, anywhere with vegetation or nature is built upon and as for street parking! Terrible!
The Tricorn Centre was never maintained. It was left deteriorating for decades. Dark, damp and mouldy. If it was made from materials that didn’t erode like concrete, I think it would have survived.
Does any one have any photos of the old computer games shop that was upstairs in the Tricorn? Used to get ZX Spectrum games from there and remember a Mario Bros arcade cabinet just outside the entrance
I was at Portsmouth university from 1998 1999... And stayed in fratton on Sandringham Road and I also lived in back then was known as Trafalgar House.... it was an old naval accommodation....
It's a great place now. I've moved around a lot in my life, Army brat, but this city is really the only place I call home. Moved their in 2004. I remember it much more livelier even 5 years after this was filmed. I had many great times there. My brother lives there now. I kinda miss the place. Would live to go back someday soon.
Does anyone remember the old comic shop (might have been Mondo Comics?) that used to be upstairs inside what I think must have been the Tricorn market? Don't remember the exact year, but would have been late 80's/early 90's. Stalls downstairs, and some shops above.
Yes I remember the comic shop upstairs. The only reason I ever went inside the tricorn really. The stalls downstairs had people and stuff everywhere. It was manic.
I used to busk in the high street with my Sax in the early 90s. Had a great time. Sold loads of tapes. Grew up in Portsmouth. That whole high street was adrift with my music at that time. Not loud, but drifting through the high street. Ahhhh. Memories.
@@PieAndChips You say that like it's a bad thing. Without portsmouth uni I'm P sure the town centre would look probably the same as it did in this video. Typical thick pompey locals that don't understand how much money the university injects into the local economy. If I lived in Portsmouth I'd much rather see an international student on the street instead of a benefits-scrounging chav.
Yes, there was in the early stages, but they had severe damp issues and the residents were moved out, so most of the time the tricorn was there they were empty. I don't think there were many of them which seem quite strange as to why they only built a few.
I was only 3 when this video was recorded but I can still remember the tricorn. It was there until 2004. Other than the demolishion of the tricorn, the area has changed very little in these 20 years.
Good video. It captures what a bleak and drear place The Tricorn was from the off. Brutalist architecture is fine, but this example in Pompey just never cut it.
Yeah I agree. I love brutalist architecture, but seeing it here it looked absolutely dreadful. I don't think they appreciated how much maintenance a building like that would need when it was first built. With a brick building it'll need re-pointing every 50 years or so, but you'd need to jet-wash the concrete every 5 at least, replace faded perspex panelling etc. Looked great on the drawing table.
Thanks for replying - the reason I ask is because the most bizarre thing happened the other day. I was watching this video with my wife and I jokingly said it'd be funny if we were in it. Well, would you believe it, but just as I said that we crossed the shot! There we were, probably on one of our first dates walking around Portsmouth as 16 years olds! We're now 34 and 35 years old and still together :-)
interesting viewing. Just looking at the average build of most of the people male and female in this video. I think it is fair to say most appear to have a relatively healthy 'body mass index'. Compare that to recent videos on RUclips of Commercial Road and Cascades, where you will find the majority look like Wayne and Waynetta Slob. Remember when ''does my bum look big in this'' was a concern of how one looked. Rather than todays version, ''I must stuff more fast food down my neck and sit on my arse and do F**k all exercise'' so they can look like some No-Mark Celeb and post pix on 'soshall meeja' Right, I'm off down Gunwharf mush.................. .
I think of Portsmouth going downhill in the last 10 years, but it looks better than this now. There are some really great areas in Portsmouth & Southsea. I love it here.
It was stunning! Such a shame it couldn't be looked after better.

I agree I'm 37 and see this coming a few years before mate online shopping got a lot to play in it
Blimey, it looks shit enough in this video... if it's got worse in the 25 years since this video, then it must be a right shit hole now!

Crazy to think that this was only 20 years ago and everything looks so dated - the store fronts, the fashion, everything!
But life looked so much better
ABBA sings itself as usual into eternity😊

I was 12 then thanks for sharing love these memorable vids ♥️🙂
Bought a jacket from Mr Clive in the late 80's, still got after30 years

The happiest looking person in this clip must be the Teddy Bear .

And now its somehow worse the centre of Pompey is one huge university campus n its awful no thought for us who actually live here at all
That's how I remember it back in the 80's. Good video. Thank you
Brilliant video, cheers, we use to absolutely love the Tricorn as kids in the 80’s and lads in the 90’sł
What was the tricorn?
What a dump it was.. Still had some fond memories hanging around there...
Its missing "four for fifty"
Does any one have any photos of the old computer games shop that was upstairs in the Tricorn? Used to get ZX Spectrum games from there and remember a Mario Bros arcade cabinet just outside the entrance
My dude - I have also been looking for this for years as on my earliest memories was buying games there for my 48k Spectrum! Did you ever find any?
great video! so many memories! I wish somebody had a video from inside the tricorn shopping area.
I'd love to see this too. Shame we didn't all have cameras to document everything back then!
Cavalier 1.7, Aqua Cars
4:24 is where I used to park to do my Commercial Rd shop on a Saturday. Used to be free then as well !

Loved the Tricorn Toby 👍
I Wish Portsmouth Rebuild the Tricorn Centre with Modern Shops and Lots of bright Lights

I remember the sax playing around that time. We were down there every Saturday
Lovely to see this.
I remember Tricorn disco and the one tiny lift that stank of Pee.
Portsmouth has changed alot
back then it was not so often you'd see a foreign looking face. Now its not so often you'd see someone whose English.
Now we have places like CEX starbucks and even Waterstones

RIP Shane gone not forgotten thought and prayers Johnny ,Wilma and their family from Brendon
Toby Warrington now we have a lot more knobs lol
Am I correct in thinking that there were some residential flats in the Tricorn building?
Yes, there was in the early stages, but they had severe damp issues and the residents were moved out, so most of the time the tricorn was there they were empty. I don't think there were many of them which seem quite strange as to why they only built a few.
Have u got anymore old vids of Portsmouth
Funny (Tricorn excepted), nothing has changed in 20 years. Commercial Road still the same. People all look the same.
Exactly! I'm so surprised how much this looks like it was filmed yesterday, apart of the buildings that changed
Reminds me of Charlotte street, Shirt King and the golden bell pub
Worked at A wains on the first floor for many years, such a drab old place, but still have good memories

Solomon Gumede student accommodation and travel lodge?
My son was also 3 Soloman, and has fond memories of the Tricorn.
Amazing!
Commercial Rd and the old town centre with Buckland and Sommers Town that whole area better be demolished and replaced by a park.
The nostalgia
I remember as a kid going to the adventure playground place and their was a Chinese market.
Lawrence Craddock they both still exist
Where abouts in Portsmouth is this?
The Tricorn..., yes, those were the days!
My friends brother threw himself off the top of the Tricorn building, back in 97.
Did he survive?
@@ArenS2007 Unfortunately not, car parks were 4 stories high.

I remember the big our price in the late 80's and loads of record shops in the tricorn
There was Virgin, Dominos, Our Price and HMV in the town centre.
I lived in port sea god I miss these times
how shit was that bloody Tricorn lol
Stairway to heaven
Wow.. it's totally different from today
I plan to recreate this in 2029 so wish me luck if I even remember to do it
Vote Docker !
I remember Mr V's camping shop got cleared out overnight by a few lads 😂
24 years ago this month… Brutal… & I’m not talking about the architecture…
karma will come for all the evil ones and then it will be a great earth with honest decent leaders that dont bullshit human kids XXX
Anyone got any memories/photos of the Somerstown Deck [ circa 1970s - 1990s ]?
Is that the one that spanned over Winston Churchill Ave with the “ curly surly” on the one side and the bridge on the other ?
@@pashvonderc381 Indeed.
Brilliant. Pity the Casbah wasn't shown on there.
PompeyChris71 I thought the Tricorn was the Casbah.
The Casbah was the pub. My local actually. and it was a great pub as well.
Do you have any more of this footage?

And now it’s completely terrible
Thank goodness they demolished the TryScone Center.
It was pretty much a rite of passage for every creative studies fresher to borrow a camcorder and film an apocalyptic movie down the Tricorn!
Shocking example of bad planning, expect the pigeons thought it great.
Moved to Australia to get away from this hole !
