Literally swinging down and trying to cut the bottom of the ball to create a backward spin for more carry is an old school, silly way to teach. BUT!!!, I have coached kids a lot and one of the big problems they have is usually an uppercut. Telling them to swing down slightly, helps them stay away from dropping hands and barrel to low. By trying to swing down, they are usually swinging a lot more like the swing above then you think.
