Literally swinging down and trying to cut the bottom of the ball to create a backward spin for more carry is an old school, silly way to teach. BUT!!!, I have coached kids a lot and one of the big problems they have is usually an uppercut. Telling them to swing down slightly, helps them stay away from dropping hands and barrel to low. By trying to swing down, they are usually swinging a lot more like the swing above then you think.

I believe he would be pleased at this point of her swing and depending on where she started, he might be proud. I am not necessarily speaking for Jake, but I believe he would say just a bit wider base can help with that spinning and working a stride isolation drill and starting to learn how to build ground force would definitely help.True that her head is very stable, but as one person has noted, she spins with no weight transfer. She does have a bit of an early wrist roll. I like where she is here and would be interested in seeing an updated swing if she is still playing.

Contact and bat speed are definitely important, but what they didn't cover or explain, Launch Angle. Although ball exit speed wasn't covered, launch angle is more important. As far as which is more important, bat speed or launch angle? No science behind it yet, but imagine a bat speed of 70 mph and a ball at a negative launch angle (ground ball) and a ball at a 25 degree launch angle. Extreme comparison, yes, but it shows the importance of launch angle regardless of bat speed. Sounds like CoachMcDonald1 is an Epstein Hitting fan. Or at least a Ted Williams fan.

Mechanics are not bad, but she's just spinning. She's not transferring weight into the front leg. Starts her hands a little early also.

Now that this post is almost 4 years old, I'll weigh in :-) I second what FFS said. She's doing a LOT right but not transfering her weight to the front foot for contact. She's fine (IMHO) if she's sitting back on a changeup, but shouldn't be sitting on the back leg for every pitch. just adding this comment in case someone new to the game sees the video and thinks this is what a perfect swing is supposed to look like. This is actually a good example of what is referred to as "spinning" where the batter does most everything right except they skip the weight transfer/forward movement prior to rotating (She's probably playing DI now and has forgotten all about this post!)

Can you use regular baseball to hit with the impact bat and does this help you to not pop up?

Jake would be proud, but I think he would tell her to stop spinning on the back foot and pinch the back knee in causing the back heel to pull in and up.

Obviously, its because the averages in the home-run derby have home-runs by the best power hitters in baseball, and the average in regular games is from every hitter.

actually he is a hybrid of a linear and rotational hitter. . . if you look at his swing in slow mo or even normal speed you can see he moves way forward, has his back foot off the ground, but also rotates which makes both a linear and rotational hitter unlike Ichiro who is completely linear
