    Suggestion on the re-inforced zip loc bags: Use different colors on the seams for quick identification, and then use clear packing tape on the "face" of the bag so you can still see the contents easily.

    Just about every hikers pack I have seen has ziplock brand bags in it, mine included. I bring a few empty ones with me for trash and laundry etc. Other misc uses include pillow, firestarter, rain collection , filling a Sawyer water bag in shallow creek, collecting and keeping tinder dry, camera rain protection, map bag, I just recently learned you can put food in them too.

    For color coding you can use colored sheets of paper. You can use the paper to list all the items inside.

    Yep a good thick plastic say 10 mil (if I remember correctly the higher number the mil the thinner the plastic but I could be wrong so look it up) can work wonders. Not only is it a way to carry items but can work as a water bag, trash bag, kindling gathering bag etc. I still use good plastic bags to keep my socks and undies dry but they are also backup for the a fore mentioned.

    Great video Luke. Thanks to you I purchased the Kifaru set of 4 and really like them. Worked very well on my 100 mile section.

    I like the way you think Luke! Not everything needs to be ''Name Brand'' in terms of kit bags.

    Great tip on using the tape. I'll have to do this with my battery ziploc bags and my wallet bag.

    I've been using these types of bags for years Luke, no real failures yet ;-)) I also use different sizes of bags depending on how much I need to put inside of one. Al-tho I like to get the Freezer grade bags.....they are a lot more durable ;-)) Yes.....like you said, get the "Name Brand" bags or you'll just be buying more bags later :-{
    Take Care :-))

    You can write onto the zip lock bag on the white triangle where you see the logo. That's where you would write the date of your food you're freezing. From experience, you're more likely to break the zipper than tear the bag. HEFTY brand gallon freezer bags are the best.

    Great stuff ! I use a bunch of 'baggies' in my packs. You can label them but, being see through its so quick and easy to find things. I like the double seal freezer bags, they're thicker, and seal well. I don't like the 'zipper' style, they can puncture other bags, and fail more easily. definitely get name brand, and I like the duct tape idea.

    I just tried making my first one. Ended up having to make a strap out of the tape because my 3 year old daughter wanted a duct tape purse. She thinks she's super cool now. Good tip.

    When I first started this video I was thinking "really?? He's gonna tell us that Ziplocs are an innovative way to organize your pack?" I've tried this though. Another option color coding is spray painting them. Some aerosols will adhere to plastic, but the tape idea is superior really.

    I would like to start using dry bags for food. one for minute rice, one oats , self rising flour etc.. never having used a dry bag my concern is, do they have a chemical odor, like some plastics, that would affect the food. does anyone make dry bags made of food grade materials?

    • @opinionatedcheapskate-outd2462
      @opinionatedcheapskate-outd2462 8 лет назад

      You would have to put the food into some food grade container first. Dry bags are really only to keep water out, and you would not want anything like flour loose in the bag, because it would screw up the seal.

    Another way to color code the plastic bags is to use some of the cheap $.99 can(s) of spray paint from Walle World.
