Watch the original version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Not trying to be a jerk but I don’t think this version is anything close to being spot on. It’s too slow, boring and without passion. This singer probably isn’t a professional but please don’t say someone is spot on until you can compare it to the original. Just my opinion.
@@munchey99508 Are you referring to the 70s film version? I know it well and grew up on it as the "only" rendition. That's an edited studio recording- this is a single-take live recording. And I only said that his PHRASING is spot-on compared to the "original" . Even Carl Anderson doesn't do it the same way in the film live: ruclips.net/video/W9MgXZGTCAc/видео.html And TBH, I actually prefer Tim Mincin's Judas: ruclips.net/video/5lTwmK__TDo/видео.html
Personally I think his phrasing was to compartmentalised and broke up the flow of the song. His tone is stunning without a doubt, but he was also falling off support in parts which may mean the phrasing wasn’t working for him. (There’s a difference between emotion and falling of support) however I completely agree in parts it was perfectly phrased, and more interesting for me, originally delivered. People have always struggled with the song because in rests almost completely in the upper register. That coupled with the emotion of the song means it will always be one of the hardest MT songs to sing. Just my opinion of course!
The way he phrases the melody is very individual. A lot of singers go into autopilot while singing, but he's bringing out every emotion while never falling behind on the rhythm. That's really some dedication to the part that Anderson and Neeley would be proud of. :)
7 years later, but hot damn! That was one of the very best versions of this song I've heard. NAILED it! The expressions, the inflections, etc. It really shows Judas' character: his admiration for Jesus, his criticism of what's happened, his fear of the Romans, etc. I believe that Alex believes he really is talking to Jesus and begging him to calm the crowd. Excellente! Kudos! Bravissimo! 👏
His name is Joshua Steven Kartes. he's our resident Accompanist with Broadway Sessions but also one of the most sought after talents in New York. He's unbelievably talented.
In some moments I thought that he was going to cry for the enormous emotion of his performance, and it is I who has ended up with tears in his eyes for the incredible talent that he evokes
Utterly incredible voice aside (like Carl Anderson reborn), his ACTING. The stakes are all there. His eyes are so alive. Such an incredible performance ❤
What a fantastic performance! This feels like an original version, while simultaneously feeling like a tribute. The two elements aren't confused, though, they compliment each other.
Omg this is amazing 👏 😍 🙌 💖 Honestly, who the is this guy and why have I never heard of him. He is incredible, as is the pianist. I'm blown away. This is completely perfect.
Really really really good performance but it helps me think of how amazing Carl Anderson's performance really was the vocals were comparable in a lot of different ways but the stage acting of Carl Anderson was absolutely off the scale throughout the whole sequence of that song you felt much more of an inner torment coming out
Super anal about who's cast for Juads as it's my favorite part (and the lead) of the play. No one has been able to measure up to Carl Anderson for me.... save for this guy! NICE!! :)
Sooooo goood! I really like the performance. I think that the performance of a character like Judas is more important that his voice (but you hve the both, good )
WHAT!!! What!!! I think had he been alive, Carl Anderson would have shaken Alex by the hand and in doing so delightfully passed on his baton. INCREDIBLE VOCAL PERFORMANCE. Shame people kept walking in front of the camera. 😂
This is nearly as good as Carl Anderson, damn. I can't speak for his live performances but Jesus Christ Superstar would have had many takes so to be nearly as good live as the studio recording is is saying something.
I've been going down a rabbit hole finding different versions of this song and the phrasing in this one is pretty spot-on.
Oh good, this was my first click for the rabbit hole I was about to go down so maybe I'll stop here. :)
Got to be in the top 10 songs ever written IMO

I don’t think many people realize how incredibly good this is.
Man, the pianist went all out. It was so fun hearing them shred on the piano!
my god.... the feelings... the despair in his eyes. Very good man.
You do Carl's memory well, awesome. Also holy hell whoever is on the piano, you're incredible.
I so want to say that has to be TWO pianos.

Damn I'd love to see him play Judas in a full production! What a talented young man!
he really understands why he's singing and translates that into his singing so well. his acting and singing is so spot on
This man is singing for the Gods!!! The pianist is CRAZY!!!!! WOW!!!! congrats to them both!!!!
Love the emotion in his face. BRilliant
Good job son, makes me think of Carl’s version. And pianist is killing it too.
I wasn’t expecting the rich smoothness in the lower notes to come out of him. This whole performance just has me in awe I’m ???
oh shit... who plays this at the piano? damn groovy :O

BROADWAY SESSIONS all those improvised vamps for that back phrasing, shows he knows the music well!
@@RaisedThird Amazing instrumentation!
It gave the song a completely different feel and I am 10,000% here for it!
This just goes to show how hard it is to sing this song, because this guy is an amazingly talented singer and he still made mistakes. Super impressive
1:10 his voice breaks but he keeps going and it worked brilliantly! Amazing job man you have lots of talent!
a bit too much belt, not enough mix. But handled it like a rockstar!
In some moments I thought that he was going to cry for the enormous emotion of his performance, and it is I who has ended up with tears in his eyes for the incredible talent that he evokes
HOLY SHIT. Both the vocalist AND that pianist. This is an incredible version
Best cover of this song ever, with such a passion and talent, amazing voice.
Eh I thought it was way too overboard
This performance is just absolutely raw emotion, beautiful. Carl would be proud
wow. Amazing pianist!
4:30 the pianist kept on repeating that part so subtly until the singer decided to end the song.
Just coming across this! WOW! Incredibly talented young man!!! Thank you!
Utterly incredible voice aside (like Carl Anderson reborn), his ACTING. The stakes are all there. His eyes are so alive. Such an incredible performance ❤
Kid You have talent. One of the best renditions. Get to New York! Trust Me On This.
I don't know if I'm more impressed by his singing or by the fact that he didn't blink once throughout the song.
Awesome performance! Great to see it being kept true to the 1973 version, well done!
i just realised that ive seen him in Parade this summer😍
Josh Kartes on the keys 😍 crazy talent
What a fantastic performance! This feels like an original version, while simultaneously feeling like a tribute. The two elements aren't confused, though, they compliment each other.
This guy uderstands the song call about. (y) Congratulations from a JCS fan from Hungary.
Carl Anderson is THE Judas but this is one hell of a performance! I love the variety of voices he uses, he really brings out all the emotions.
Very good.... very much like Carl Anderson's version but I won't complain too much. Carl was superb.

3:26 wow, so powerful
Caro Alex,sei fantastico!!
A parte la voce dove ti preferisco nelle note alte...la tua interpretazione è all'altezza di Anderson!!
Def. the best version of all covers
A very good popular interpretation of Juda's party ..., very close to Murey Head's original musterpiece ... Alex - VERY GOD GOOD
Wow!
Where can I learn to sing like this, pretty please?... My idol. 😍
Super anal about who's cast for Juads as it's my favorite part (and the lead) of the play. No one has been able to measure up to Carl Anderson for me.... save for this guy! NICE!! :)
