    I never realized "fetish farming" was the term for it before today, but I absolutely knew a guy who did exactly that, back on tumblr. For those who don't know, there was this guy in the Wreck-it Ralph fandom who would go around to different popular blogs and ask a seemingly innocent question, along the lines of "Can video game characters die of a broken heart?" Before going on for a few more sentences about... the science behind dying of a broken heart, I think? I don't recall exactly, it's been a long while, but that first sentence is chiseled into my brain at this point.
    I recall first encountering him in 2013-2014, but I've heard he was already a Thing(tm) years before that, and I've also seen him in more recent times around the Undertale fandom, asking more or less the same question, just swapping out "video game characters" for "monsters". I remember the posts being fairly recent, too, meaning this guy's been at it for nearly a decade, if not over a decade at this point. Some people just never change, I guess.

    The worst part of fetiśh farming/mining is that the people who do it specifically get off on the fact they’re tricking someone into unknowingly providing them with material. That’s why they don’t just go to an adult artist or sex workers with their requests (like they should) and instead resort to targeting people, usually KIDS, who they think won’t know better. It’s predatory and despicable.

    • @cielopachirisu929
      @cielopachirisu929 2 года назад +23

      Most of the ones I’ve met were kids themselves that were in denial that their fetish was sexual, so they saw no harm in asking other artists for it.

  • @KairiKeyz
    @KairiKeyz 2 года назад +502

    I'm on Devianart so I have some tips on what do when someone asks for an art request at least on the website.
    - Always check what the user favorites is there's something off on their gallery, that's a red flag.
    - If they insists you to draw that feels off or makes you uncomfortable, ignore them, or even better, block them.
    - Add some rules of what what you can and can't draw, trust me on this one.
    That's why I limit requests and what people could ask me to draw. Especially if they sound like a fetish.

    • @flimsyflame1251
      @flimsyflame1251 2 года назад +46

      And always make sure to add a “I can deny a request/commision for any reason” on top of your list!! That way you don’t have to try to list all the stuff you don’t wanna draw and risk having someone say “mememe well it wasn’t on your rules >:((”
      It should be a given to anyone requesting, but I think it’s mostly there for the artist to refer to if they have trouble with denying stuff.

    I have never interacted or knew about “The Cheerleader Man” at all, but I did do some research about this person because I got too interested about this user. I won’t mention all of the details for obvious reasons but I will mention that this user was mutual or friends with one of my followers, so small world, and I will also mention that RUclips wasn’t the only place they did this.
    This is a pretty good cautionary tale for younger viewers and artists with a pretty good moral at the end. It shows the dangers of requests and to avoid them in case it fuels someone’s desires. The questions you’ve mentioned are also comments I’ve seen before on two art related websites, one of course being Deviantart and the other site I won’t mention since the latter is more NSFW based. Like you said, it's okay to have a fetish but given how much the user was doing this, it's so creepy. Anyways, great job with this video!

    As I take the time to recontextualize everything in my childhood I find it oddly humorous in a way that the things I saw frequently in my childhood may or may not have had sinister or completely benign origins, just the power of innocence to see the best in everything I suppose. I barely interacted with anyone when youtube and the sonic fandom started out because my family warned me so I was relatively fearful but still enjoyed seeing trends without actually engaging to understand where they come from. Sonic characters in Cheerleader outfits was one of the trends and in my mind I was like "Oh my gosh that is so cute, I love seeing Cream wear that little get up Isn't she just adorable" weird to me that there was an actual person *requesting* this art instead of the fandom doing it just because they genuinely might find it cute themselves.

I would draw peoples ocs, or even a tv show character. One day I got a comment from some guy who was obsessed with this childrens tv show. It was a super crappy animated mouse show or something. And he said something along the lines of “could you draw the main mouse character huge and holding his mouse friend?” I was confused but willing to do it, however before I could get to drawing it, another user commented under my post and saved me. When I went to his page, I was met with reposted requests of Sonic and co. in their pajamas. His fanfictions also usually detailed them lazing around the whole day and sleeping. Occasionally, he would request this of other characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Gumball and Darwin Watterson to name a few. However, he was mostly requesting Sonic characters.

    I don't get these kinds of people, like plenty of artists exist who do fetish art normally, there's really no reason to exploit artists who don't for it when you can just go and pay an artist who makes that kind of stuff already for it.
    I've had friends from the SFW side of my artist circles get these exact kind of messages and it's always weird to me because plenty of Fetish artists exist so why go out of your way to get it from the handful of artists who don't do that kind of work?

      Most likely scenarios are:
      1) Fooling an unknowing artist into participating in the kink IS part of the kink (which is awful because healthy kink should always involve consent and awareness)
      2) they don't wanna pay an actual kink artist
      3) they legit don't know kink artists or how to commission them

    My first and only experience with fetish farming has been in the Moomin Tumblr fandom. There was this person who went around asking artists to draw Sniff, a Moomin character, wearing flip flops and/or swimming trunks. It became sort of an inside joke and I was kinda aware of it until I got an ask from the guy’s main blog requesting I partake in this... tradition???? I forgot about the ask by the time a friend actually confirmed this was, in fact, fetish farming and all of my mutual and I blocked them

    Oh gosh, I've had an encounter with a tutu fetish farmer. In 2016 I created a Deviantart account to separate Sonic stuff from main, and after posting a single pic of my OC, someone asked me to draw that OC in a tutu. I didn't really know what fetishes were at the time (though at least I was 18+), so I drew it, thinking it was a cute idea. Then they tried RPing with me and felt a lil pushy despite me saying I have no interest in RPing
    It wasn't even anything big, but now I'm hesitant on drawing tutus, whether in Sonic art or not. Which is a shame because I think they're cute :C

    Glad you talked about this. Ugh...reminds me of a time on DA when I still did free requests. I thought putting up rules for them was a no brainer, stick to the rules, I even put in bold NO FETISHES......and what does the thrid person do? Ask me for one....I was a confused people pleaser at the time, as the request was of a fakemon with swirly eyes and I didn't know that was a fetish. I had drawn (not uploading it yet) it with it's eyes closed walking in a field (though my gut was still screaming the red flag at me, despite trying to make the piece innocent. Listen to your gut, people. It knows somehow.) but later, the guy DM'd me and showed me a picture of a dog laying on it's back, belly exposed, looking up at the camera and wanted me to draw his fakemon like that. I deleted what I'd drawn right after and (after breaking away from my annoying people pleasing self) asked the guy if this was for a feitish. He was honest, surprisingly, and said it was, so I was honest, told him I deleted the pic and would not to his request.....Dude had a small tantrum after that, DMing me about 5 times wanting me to continue, denying yet not denying that the request really was a weird fetish. I ignored him, blocked him and stopped doing free requests after that. One bad apple spoiled the bunch for me. Even now, not touching DA ever again, I'm not giving free requests to just anyone ever again. Respect an artist's rules. Seriously.

It's even worst in Fandoms where Ocs and their creators tend to be singled out too. If you have a fetish, good for you. But commission a NSFW or fetish artist. A lot of them will draw their ocs for your kink/fetish because money is money. Plus Ya know, They know exactly what they are getting into with that line of commission.

I had an irl "friend" who would beg me to become apart of his foot fetish, even after telling him time after time I wasnt into that. And I saw an artist get fetish fanart of their characters. It doesnt help that its a normalized thing for people on deviantart to flaunt their fetish around where minors can see it.
    I guess what i'm trying to get at is, if you're a young or beginner artist, and something makes you uncomfortable: set boundaries, tell them no. And if people dont respect those boundaries then they probably arent worth your time.

    Yoo, I just made a PSA post on tumblr talking about fetish farming/mining. I guess it's happening a lot more frequently recently? But yeah man. These people are gross. It's fine to have a fetish, but to get artists to unknowingly and nonconsensually draw their material is so wrong. ESPECIALLY when they're getting minors involved. Then they act like it's not a fetish and that it's completely innocent, and it's just... Man we know what you're doing just stop. They're scumbags for not paying, not being honest, and preying on those who are naive or are minors.

    That's relatable, artistes who get weird comments from weird people do draw what they want happens alot, it did happen to me yet but it might happen someday but i hope it does not happen.

    Some guy on deviantart back when I was 12 asked me to art trade a bunch and he would keep asking me to draw some fandom characters wearing stinky french berets
