Anyone who's interested in purchasing server where you get static fan control purchase one these servers, owned two Dell Poweredge R720 for couple years. After finding this command tool this gentlemen is using truly made world of difference servers run super quiet oppose to them sounding like 747 taking off. Appreciate the great work looking forward to seeing more tips and tricks in the future once again thanks.
I CAN confirm that this works on 11th Gen Dell Poweredge servers! I tried this on my Dell Poweredge R710 and it dropped my fan speeds from 3720RPM to about 2880RPM. You have earned a like my friend!
You've made my home lab absolutely quiet! I run my Poweredge T320 with E5-2430 on 10% of fan capacity and it's perfect. I was stressing the CPU for good 2 hours and the temperature won't go over 75 celsius. Thanks, thanks, THANKS!
Sir you're my savior, my Dell T130 freaked out when i put an RX570 on the pci slot. And with your video i was able to quiet the fans down. Thanks a lot!
You are a gifted teacher. Thank you for sharing this. Guys FYI: Was getting this: error unable to establish ipmi v2 / rmcp+ session get device command failed unable to open sdr for reading For me what fixed it on an r730 was rebooting to the f10 iDrac setting and changing my password to the exact same one as before. I don't know why it worked but it did. Good Luck
Thank you so much! This worked with my Dell R710. I had to enable IPMI over LAN in the iDRAC web interface, and had to manually reset the user password in the iDRAC menu, but after that it worked!
just did this on my Dell T610 and worked - thankyou for the video. Been trying to get round to sorting this as the server, to be used for home lab stuff, was too noisey to be left on and as they take so long to powerup anyway I wasnt using it much. It can now purr away in teh corner and is no worse than my desktop (although PSU is a little noisey but still not very long
I was able to use this on my old Poweredge T110 II. I actually had the opposite issue. I am setting it up as an Unraid backup server and the hard drives were getting too hot. They were getting up to 48-49 C. I changed the fan speed to 50% and 30 minutes later they are down to 38-40. Thanks!
It seems that when power is removed, the fans go back to their original setting and I have to redo the IPMI commands. Is there a way to make the change permanent?
Worked like a charm! Is it also possible to just increase the temperature threshold leaving the fans in auto mode? So that they run at a lower speed but still increase if the temp goes too high.
Just to save some people some time, if you have Dell R710 with idrac 6 to enable IPMI at the end of the BIOS boot, press Ctrl-e to enter the Remote Access Setup and enable IPMI over LAN
After I got to playing around with it. This is one sweet video. It works really good .....until you shut the server down and you kill the power and on reboot you are right back to where you started. So how do you make those settings stay?
I can confirm this works and helped me setup my T420 with a noctua industrial fan mod to run at 1200rpm and keep the temps down while keeping quiet! Cheers!!
On the R610 idarc6 it worked. Just replace the damaged coolers with excess load. Before 16000 now 3000 rpm. I wanted to change the maximum automatic to the balanced one. Thank you
dude thanks so much you just earned a sub Even though this is a temporary solution for me, im very sensitive to loud noise and it affects my focus to work on my new server. I have a R730 with no problems when it comes to using third party drives, but this R730XD really likes to scream at 65% of its lungs (PWM). Setting down to 15% makes it so i can actually work and figure out a scripted solution based on temperature. Thanks for recommending we explore that option
your awesome this works great i ended up turning this into like 3 batch files one at 20% one a 40% and one at 70% comes in handy when i decide to do some encoding with my server im pulling almost 300w off the 2 intel E5-2690 v2 and 20% fan speed only keeps the cpu's to about 85c at 40 its about 75 but if i do it for more then hour it starts to get too hot and alarm goes off so tend to turn to 70 when doing more then 1 or 2 of them and my server is in a closet with next to no ventilation most of its life is in idle as my truenas and jelly fin/plex box with the 16 drives
Thank you for the Dell Fans Control Command. Wonder when the temp. ram up, will the Fans increase the speed to cool down the server? Also, need to re-enter the command after every re-boot :(
This is for homelab, not for production environment. The fan will stay at whatever speed you set. Depends on the operating system you use, you can create a script for it to execute at startup. I believed disabled Life cycle will also retain the static testing.
Thank you for this! Now I don't need to wear hearing protection in my own house! I don't suppose there's a setting to control the fan speed over some reasonable (non ear-splitting) range, according to temperature? Every desktop and laptop computer made in the last decade has used thermostatic control of fan speeds -- even Dells. How on Earth can it be so hard for Dell's server people?

Hello Ismail, Are you using the credentials for the iDrac or the server? iDrac credentials are needed.
@@344bane My worked for weeks, but then it started getting tougher to work, it wouldn't respond upon initial command. Now it stopped all together and I'm getting the same issue as @Ismail. I did just install a new video card, if anybody has a suggestions please chime in. Thanx
nice one thank you
anyone know if this works on the R610?
Work on Dell R620 ! thanks
Worked with R730XD *BIOS*: 2.11.0 *Firmware*: **2.70.70.70** *BMC ver* 9.2.0
Logged in as root, IDrac 9 , Unable to send RAW command (channel=0x0 netfn=0x30 lun=0x0 cmd=0x30 rsp=0xd4): Insufficient privilege level
Got this working, Had to downgrade iDrac firmware, Found out that around June of 19 they eliminated the static fan commands from iDrac firmware.
I don't think they removed ability. I am on latest idrac 8 (2.70.xxxx) and it works fine. However I created new IDRAC user with admin ability for IPMI over LAN
In idrac 9 you need 3.30.30.30 or older firmware
I did this on my R410 and all commands work but now the server is throwing errors saying Fan missing. Is that normal? ( So I went to 20% instead of the 15 and the errors went away which is super weird but hey it fucking works
I can't to this I have a r710
hello why my temp sensors are disabled?
