Hi guys, we took your advice on the silver coast and moved from the Algarve to Caldas de Rainha. It’s a true gem where average Portuguese live! 15 minutes to the beach. We can walk to the open air market with most beautiful vegetables and fruit I ever seen one place! Loving Portugal.
Pro tip: housing is usually more expensive in the summer in Portugal, because there's a lot more tourists (even in the non-touristy cities), so more demand for accomodation. However, the opposite is usually true for college-towns, like Coimbra. The University of Coimbra has a lot a students from all over the country (and abroad). When they all go home in June - July until September that's usually a good period to look for housing 😊😊
The information this channel shares is GOLD! You know what? So, I’m getting ready to go through chemo and the type of breast cancer I have is aggressive and rare. Hopefully, they got it all with surgery and chemo and radiation should knock out anything missed. Not gonna lie, I thought my dreams of living in Portugal were done. I’ve since gotten my fire back and look forward to making the move. I googled cancer care in Europe and the two spots that offer the best? UK and Portugal! Just another thing to reaffirm my decision! I’m so excited! Thank you for all you do! You guys help keep my dreams alive! ❤️❤️❤️
First let me say Thank you. All 4 of you have changed my mind set tremendously since came across your channel over 2 years ago. And yes, even your daughters deserve a thank from me as well after seeing how they was able to hold there own and the level of knowledge after momentarily taking over your channel ..lol.. I am now putting my son(7) in the position to be financially sound by the time he turns 18. So again thank you.
Wow, thank you so much Aaron!!! And we LOVE that you are already planning for your son's financial future and he is only seven! He is going to appreciate that so much when he gets older!!!
We just flew from Monterey County, CA this week and walking around Lisbon hoping to bump into you guys! 🤗. Love your channel and agree with everything you say. We retired 10 years ago at 48 years old. Not too hard to do if you put your mind to it. Keep up the good work, you are inspiring many folks. Time to walk the Lisbon hills looking for some of your ice cream!
I spent Christmas in Portugal while on a study abroad program in Spain back in my college days in the eighties. After college I lived in Brazil. Fast forward now. I am now 58 years old, speak Portuguese and Spanish, and ready to check out Portugal for retirement. Thanks you guys for a wealth of information!
You guys really make it seem like a dream come true. I'm looking at New Zealand (death by animals), Canada (death by freezing), and Portugal. Every time I see your videos, Portugal always seems the best choice. Whatever path I choose, THANK YOU for all your input.
Haha🤣. I live in NZ and not sure what these animals are....sheep maybe? 🤣. We have no snakes, only one spider that has a toxin and such small numbers of these I have never seen one in the wild. Lots of flightless birds and a few possums, deer. No bears. Fairly benign really.
Ha! The teenagers totally ate all the ice cream. I’ve been there. I was salivating along with you and really felt that disappointment when you find the empty box. Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for the videos! Our family is on the FIRE path and it's great to see fellow parents living an intentional life outside of the American norm. Side note, I love the stone sidewalks in Portugal - a little slippery when wet - but some much more interesting than concrete.
Really enjoy your videos. It's helping me to calculate numbers and personal logistics. Keep the videos coming. In the meantime, I''ve been studying portuguese. Obrigadinha!
The housing market is crazy here in the US! It’s seriously pushing me to relocate internationally sooner than I had planned. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge about Portugal! It’s so inspiring and uplifting to see that there are Americans living happily and fully in other countries.
OMG I feel so much better about the food now! My daughter is going off to uni and she often eats things and deceptively leaves the packaging so that I think there’s some left!
My son and his friends drank all of my liquor before leaving for college, knowing that I wouldn't notice since I don't drink much and filled the bottles with water. Imagine my surprise when I had guests over a year later.
Fantastic information especially for my situation.. solo traveller from New Zealand (arrived this week) semi retired.. been following you both for nearly 2 years!! .. looking forward to more great vids .. thanks guys
The premise of the video is living outside Lisbon or Porto, but I know that those two cities in particular interest many people, so sharing also a different perspective. I'm living in Lisbon for 35$/day (30EUR). Housing is the main factor driving cost, so if you are willing to purchase property here you can really reduce your monthly expenses. I'm living in a duplex with a garden 15 minutes away from City Centre by walk for 320€/month. Average monthly budget of just under 1000€, and naturally the monthly budget per person could be a good deal lower if a couple shared expenses. Portugal is a great place to live, and both the people and culture is fantastic, so I would encourage anyone to give it a try :-)
Thanks for the awesome information! I am planning a 3 week trip to Portugal next year to look at for early retirement in the next year or so from my Healthcare career at 55. I will still teach, but I am ready to move abroad. I have looked at Costa Rica and Indonesia. And now Portugal. I am checking out at least 5 cities for a feel of the country so this information helps tremendously. 😊
Damn! Maybe Sabrina and I should try this. Your message gives us the goose bumps. We are in eye shot of our retirement years. You’ve tickled our interest!
You've never been MORE relatable than that parenting moment at the fridge. I get that from my hubby and child...and no matter how often I speak on it...it changes temporarily but doesn't change change . 😆 Appreciate this video and sharing your wisdom/ experience. Signed, striving for FIRE
They finished the ice creams and left the empty boxes. That's too funny and great content as always. I looked at Leiria as a possible permanent residence.
This is an interesting video and makes me want to research potentially living in Portugal when I retire or maybe another country with a similar cost of living and quality of life.
@@stefanossmitty3318 I’m trying to decide between Coimbra and Porto. I need to be in a city, but then I ask myself how much I expect to do. Porto isn’t far from Coimbra by train. If I can find a rowing club in Coimbra that might seal the deal. I’ll be there for a visit in about two weeks.
Two questions, please: I've heard that many houses in Portugal are often not as well insulated as the US and can result in miserable winters or overly hot in the summers. Has that been your experience? The next question is about the cost of electricity there for a house with a family of 4 or 5.

The one problem I can think of of not living in Porto or Lisbon is that you'll need to commute a fair bit to get to an international airport, which might be a pain if you like to travel a lot in Europe.
Great information! It’s interesting that $24/day roughly works out to the minimum wage in Portugal. It would be impossible to live that comfortably in the US on minimum wage unless you qualified for Medicaid (free medical).
Continued... The reason I got into debt, was due to COVID, my daughter didn´t have work for 1 year. Luckly, she has been working in her area she got her degree in and she is paying for almost half of her food. Thanks again.

Those grocery costs sound like a starvation diet. Our American food costs four our family of three, which admittedly include a hungry 20 year old and a tendency towards health food is around $500 a week and that includes no eating out. At least in our area I'd say food costs are up around 20% in the last year and 100% in the last five years. How can Portugal have escaped that that price escalation?
Can you please make a video about the double Taxation by the USA as a foreign resident. Does USA Tax you for owning a home or having a foreign bank account, checking or saving? How you are doing wit the FATCA?
Hi - Another great video, thanks! Because of your channel, and a couple of others, I have been fine-tuning my plans to create a different life for myself and thanks to all of you it's looking possible...can't thank you enough :) And the empty Ice cream boxes....hahahahahaha
It depends... There's about 140,000 people in the Coimbra region, 100,000 in the city itself, so it's not a deserted place. There are Portuguese dating sites, those are better options than Tinder, etc, that usually cater to younger people. 😊 If you learn a bit of Portuguese it will be much easier
Hello, can you make a video explaining the tax situation and how affects retirees from the USA where they are not taxed, but apparently Portugal will tax that income, can you elaborate, this could be a deal breaker for many.
