This is surely one of the most lucid explanations of Gothic that I have seen. There is no attempt to be entertaining: no melodramatic narrative; no contrived, pseudo-dramatic music; no silly historical re-enactments. It is simply a thoughtful and articulate explanation of Gothic architecture, that any average, interested person can understand. Watching this video is half an hour well spent.

Along with the rise of polyphonic music (and later contrapuntal music), the great cathedrals of Europe are among the distinctive and early glories of pre-modern Western man.

i learn more about the engineering of these great monuments from our past than i have from all the other videos on the subject iv seen so far on the subject, they all just say the gothic arch came from france, and leave it at that.the first 20 minutes should be added to all the videos on the great mid evil church videos, shown in this way, clear, easy to understand, instead of the drama, etc.makes one appreciate these great building man mad in there beliefs, but drama sells, not useful info. rock on.
