    nice video. very informative , looks easy in the studio, not so easy in the attic over 100 deg.or crawl space,

    I'm going through my old ductwork after getting a new forced air furnace installed. Great info, here. I've been a Realtor for over 24 years and have been on hundreds of home inspections and I don't ever recall seeing mastic on ductwork (including higher end new construction).

    yes agreed very good explanation that was the missing piece of equipment to pressure test hvac vent system. I was trying to come up with a hacked way of using a air compressor , leaf blower, or wet dry vaccum with a hacked psi gage. But this piece of equipment is much more easy to uses and you can uses it for more sensitive measurements like 25 pascals which is very very small interms of getting it on a psi gage.

      Thank you, Doug. It was a lot of fun to make. We just built that contraption very quickly, and turned on several cameras at different angles and let the professional home energy inspector speak. And Joe did a great job for us.

    The big thing is there is a lot of tests smoke test , high pressure test , this low pressure pascal machine test, thermal cameras , soapy water ,..etc Based on the sensitivity level and the tolerance of the leak test determines what piece of equipment to uses this was the missing precise machine i was missing. Cool stuff.

    I’m actually installing an additional duct run for my laundry room (partition wall, ele, plumbing, drywall etc). When I got to my furnace/duct runs I was astonished at how much is leaking! I went to town sealing what I could. I probably would have fired the contractor if I saw his work.
    Question: Since this is getting inspected.....do I wait for approval from inspector “BEFORE” I wrap insulation? Or do they care?

    • @BenGromicko
      @BenGromicko  2 года назад

      Home inspectors won't care to look under the insulation. A code inspector might.

    Wow , eye opening for a home owner. This is the reason why some guys give cheap prices to install a central a/c unit.
    Quick connections done wrong , after they leave .... the home owner pays the price and reaps the bad air spots and high energy bills.

    You mentioned finding disconnects in the system. How does a system get repaired inside the ceiling? I mean other than cutting drywall.
    I'm sure the builder of my 43 year old home never did the duct work correctly. Not many things were done right

    • @BenGromicko
      @BenGromicko  3 года назад +1

      There's no much we can do to ductwork in existing homes without major renovations, like you mentioned. You're correct. That's why it's important to build correctly. Now, that said, there are many opportunities to air seal and insulate in an existing home. Especially in cold climates, there are many air sealing opportunities in the attic space under the insulation and along the wall top plates. Hire a Home Energy Inspector at www.nachi.org/certified-inspectors to help.

    Is it advisable to wrap insulation around basement ducts and outside heating wall ducts (2 that run in the outside walls to the 2nd story in a 50+ year old house)?
    I already sealed my basement duct seams with the alu tape. Trick I found, rub the tape with a marble or a plastic spoon or top of finger nail will remove air bubbles and odd bends.
    Just the tape alone, already changed my bill usage from last year gave me a 7% decrease on my bill.
    I'm wiling to put the work in, just want to near the max duct efficiency with minimal loss.
    Any and all info will helps thanks.

      Yes. For existing homes. But it's available to observe the ducts when a home is being built or renovated. And that's a good opportunity there.
