John Entwistle is absolutely fucking phenomenal, but let's just take a moment to also take our hats off, drop our jaws, and sit in awe at the beastliness of the drummer here!
Thanks for posting this Steve. I was at this show and was thoroughly impressed. I had front row tickets right in front of John. When you played "Boris" I tossed a rubber spider up on stage which landed near John's feet. He eventually picked it up and held it against his face as though it was attacking him. What a cool guy and a fantastic musician. Thanks again.
A friend and I saw the JEB in '96 and he signed autographs afterwards. The Ox was a friendly and outgoing while speaking with me and the rest of the fans in the club that night, just like you'd expect a proper English Gent to be. He was one of my heroes and I've missed his musical adventures since but not as much as Roger and Pete I suppose. RIP Ox!
Love John and he had a major influence on my playing. I saw him at the Fillmore in San Francisco in the '90s and it was thunderously loud. So loud that people were walking around, looking shell-shocked. I had custom earplugs with sound discs that attenuated 25db and I still had to leave a bit early. Great show, phenomenal playing, but actually too loud to enjoy.
After watching Paul Palidino's performance at Hyde Park for the Who's 50th anniversary concert, it's not Paul's fault. What JAE did for the Who while he was alive is beyond amazing. When the Hyde park concert did "Sparks", I was wondering where the bass was to accent Pete's guitar riffs. After I saw that WHO Showtime documentary, I went for my Live at RAH 2000 DVD. In 2000 Zak played the drums like a racehorse; today he's slowed down now that he's over 50. By spring of 2002, the Who were on a level as a live band that they had not been since 1976. When JAE died.......
I didn't know humans could move like that. Or maybe he was from another world. Either way, one of the greatest (possibly the greatest) bass player in history. Unlikely anyone will compare soon, more recent rock regards bass as a string version of the most basic drum, just another device for keeping time. This style is more multi-threaded melody.
WatchMojo.com named Getty Lee as the best bass player of all time. Not even close. Getty is a great bass player, no doubt. But John was the Hammer of the Gods, The Ox, Thunderfingers. The greatest technical (and lyrical) bass guitarist that ever lived.
sigh! if only I had known of his talent sooner. I've heard it said Entwhistle was to bass, what Jimmy Hendrix was to guitar. Why did they call him the Ox? is the only thing I don't know.
Steve Luongo Hi Steve, thanks for this upload and the great sound quality... seems like standing right next to his amp! BTW I can do all this on my basses too, would you fancy getting together?
That would have been awesome to hear! Of course, Led Zeppelin, Blind Faith/Traffic/any band with Steve Winwood, and The Who are some of my favorite bands, so it's fine that it didn't work out that way by me. I'd still love to hear what that would have sounded like.
Pete always said Th e Who had a lead bass, lead drums, rhythm guitar and a lead vocal. He never spoke disrespectfully of OX's talent. Remember, had Jimmy Page gotten his way, ZEP would have been Moon, Entwistle, Page and Winwood......not that it would have been a bad thing.
Watch any interview after the OX dies. I've seen Pete cry in two interviews talking about John. He said he knew he would never find another bassist like him. John understood music...played all brass instrument(treble and bass plus that fucking French horn which is a bastard) plus he just knew harmonics. No other bassist I know had his since of harmonics.
Peter, Roger and John were being interview about the life of Keith. Some of the shit he did, he drum playing style. Well they all started to laugh but Pete said "he we are all laughing but Keith died cause he OD on drugs, drugs is what killed him". Sad the same thing happen to John.
Call me crazy but in my opinion Entwistle was not on top of his game at this point in time. It wasn't the Entwistle I'm used to. The crowd was embarrassingly quiet. The drummer was the only saving grace and his name was not even mentioned!
John Entwistle is absolutely fucking phenomenal, but let's just take a moment to also take our hats off, drop our jaws, and sit in awe at the beastliness of the drummer here!
Have to say the drummer was pretty damn good too!
Greatest bass player ever.
Never forget the Ox.
I´ve never seen a guitarist playing like this.
R.I.P. Thunderfingers, The Who isn't The Who without you!

he makes it look so effortless
Best bass player ever no contest.
Who needs stage presence when you're John Entwistle?
The best bass player who ever walked the Earth!
My ears still hurt from watching John and Steve at B.B. King's in NY in 2001. More please.
He's one of the only bassists that played very fast but still kept the high level
Steve, you have done an exemplary job of preserving his legacy. It also seems that you were the only drummer he really "got."
Some how, that cheer wasn't loud enough for that 5 min piece of music HISTORY... RIP John !
That solo was amazing.

His sound is a force of nature.

So happy to find you today! Such riches! Thank you thank you thank you
He called himself a bass guitarist.
He's magical.
Bass vs Drums..... Bass🎸 kills drums😱! God bless the late Great John Entwistle.
The Master!!!
the best bass player ever!
Gotta love Thunderfingers
he always said he rather play bass guitar than just bass
Okay. I'm blown. Thunder fingers! RIP

The electronic circuits cannot keep up with him. RIP
Great interaction
thanks for posting Steve, we love you
Hi Steve, great vid - thanks for posting!
he's on the olympo of the rock.... example for Geedy Lee was a big influence....
WatchMojo.com named Getty Lee as the best bass player of all time. Not even close. Getty is a great bass player, no doubt. But John was the Hammer of the Gods, The Ox, Thunderfingers. The greatest technical (and lyrical) bass guitarist that ever lived.
The Who - the only band with a lead bass player.
sigh! if only I had known of his talent sooner. I've heard it said Entwhistle was to bass, what Jimmy Hendrix was to guitar. Why did they call him the Ox? is the only thing I don't know.
Many thanks and you're welcome. When it thunders think of John Entwistle.
Steve Luongo Hi Steve, thanks for this upload and the great sound quality... seems like standing right next to his amp! BTW I can do all this on my basses too, would you fancy getting together?
I SOOOOOO miss the J.E.B.!
1:41 This sound came straight from hell!
That would have been awesome to hear! Of course, Led Zeppelin, Blind Faith/Traffic/any band with Steve Winwood, and The Who are some of my favorite bands, so it's fine that it didn't work out that way by me. I'd still love to hear what that would have sounded like.
Spider fingers, we LOVE you.
yes,amazing.
His calluses are probably rock hard
Melhor Baixo do Rock and Roll!!!
BAD ASS
thunder thumbs ....probably the best bassist ever..
The man
Miss his Alembic, much better tone! Still love the Ox!

Steve Luongo. A.k.a. the guy who uploaded this vid. :P
SirKorot more to follow.
Thanks Steve for sharing...is it true that John´s bases had the action so low the strings were on the other side of the neck'??
oooooft brings a bass gutar to life enuff said troops
I wonder what goes through his mind when he plays like this?
...God Bless The OX.!
if you're mining for gold, you've come to the right place!
Who is the drummer? He is pretty awesome
Peter, Roger and John were being interview about the life of Keith. Some of the shit he did, he drum playing style. Well they all started to laugh but Pete said "he we are all laughing but Keith died cause he OD on drugs, drugs is what killed him". Sad the same thing happen to John.
wow .....the OX......
me he meado del gusto...
Actually Thunder fingers, not spider fingers lol
The effects! 😝😝😝😝😝😝
No surprise he he was deaf, the size of his rig behind him is completely over the top.
Enigmatic genius from Redruth
Could you say that he's a guitarist playing bass?
Not really. He actually played horns on My Wife rather than a guitar solo.
Not hearing the crowd applause at the end. ?
thunderfingeeeeerrrssss
Nice, when you got quality gear... try playing it on my plank?
Call me crazy but in my opinion Entwistle was not on top of his game at this point in time. It wasn't the Entwistle I'm used to. The crowd was embarrassingly quiet. The drummer was the only saving grace and his name was not even mentioned!
24sKiTzo7 That Drummer is phenomenal- by the way the Drummer posted the Video👾🎟🎬🎼
bass-solo mit drum-echo. interessant.
sounds more like a guitar than a bass
That drummer's no slouch either.
Would like to hear a 'clean' solo! Maybe he needed all the sound effects ??
I understand what you mean..far too much effects on johns bass sound he just kept trying to play faster and faster and lost some groove
Effortless.
very borent
5 strings ? meh..
This drummer sucks! Copeland should have played instead lol
I wonder what goes through his mind when he plays like this?
