I have a special place in my heart for Suze. I listened to her in my early 30s when I had $72 to my name and was terrified for my future. She really motivated me to get out of debt and save myself. I’m 45 now and have been pretty minimalistic and a saver/investor since then. I’m 100% debt free and now I can do what I want and even cut down on work if I want. I never paid a penny for any of her products and haven’t watched her in years.
Besides Starbucks, Alcohol is also a waste of money, bad for your health & risky.

Not only is alcohol a waste of money but it also causes you to make foolish decisions with money. It also causes divorce which is very expensive.

What breaks my heart every time is what happens to women who gave decades of their lives to take care of their family when their husband dies or decides to split, and they are now alone, with nothing to their name, no savings, sometimes homeless.
Mostly that woman’s fault I am married but not stupid to solely depend on my husband I work pay some bills I also make sure I put money aside for emergencies
@@fatimamanneh9432We know better, but the "trad wives" type are usually recruited from very young women, who don't know as much as we do, who've been told that being a SAHM is the best thing they could do. There are also a lot of men who will force them to stay at home, everything from wrecking their cars to making them so sleep deprived they can't function. The best we can do is tell the the truth, so they know what's going on.

Women can’t be blamed for their financial situation because they always sacrifice everything for the well being of the family. They definitely need protection and laws to protect them from being out in the street homeless. Women are the backbone of the society, they raise future citizens.

Starbucks at one time was a wonderful employer with health care for even part-time employees. I stopped buying Starbucks when they stopped treating employees well.

Suze makes some very good points. But I think the "Starbucks" take-away is: be realistic and mindful about your guilty pleasures. Suze may not pay for coffee or restaurant meals, but she obviously likes nice jewelry. That's fine! She chooses one thing over another. I recall former NYC Mayor/billionaire Michael Bloomberg also saying he preferred to "brown bag" his lunches instead of eating out. He really ticked off the NYC restaurant owners. 🙂
When I stopped to figure out how much I was spending on dance lessons + dances, I was shocked. However. . . I was getting good cardio exercise 3-4 times a week, challenging my brain as I learned new steps and routines, was making social connections and new friends, and basically enjoying the heck outta myself. (All of which also contribute to good health, which saves medical expenses in the long run.) Dancing frequently was cheaper than a gym membership and also improved my sleep. I make my own coffee and meals at home, and I volunteer at arts organizations, which means I can see the shows and concerts for free. It's all about the trade-offs. Kinda like where you're going to "spend" your daily calorie allotment. ;-)
Bottom line: _know_ how much you're spending on coffee, dining out, travel, transit, entertainment, etc. And then do the calculations to determine if you really need a luxury car + frequent dining out + costly vacations + expensive entertainment. Be brutally honest about whether your spending choices are serving you well for your future needs. Suze alluded to it, but didn't say it explicitly: your ruminations about the future should really embrace worst-case scenario thinking by the time you hit your 50s. What IF I'm all alone, my friends/partner/spouse/family are gone, I no longer have a steady paycheck, and I have serious and costly health issues? What if I lose my housing? What would I do? What are the options?
Money may not buy happiness, but it certainly helps smooth out a bumpy road when life hands you surprises.

Depends how they got rich, and what their advice is. Suze is self-made, and she didn't become financially secure by cheating, or by harming others.

@@invisible.fatman Well, true...forgot about the Approved Card fiasco from way back when. But that has not been the entirety of her business career. She's a brand. She gives advice, and enough people value it to contribute to the value of her brand. Doesn't mean it's the best possible, purest advice out there. But neither is it entirely without merit.
Did not know about her association with the University of Phoenix. I know several people who got MBAs from there, knowing it wasn't the most prestigious name in higher education; but it certainly wasn't a scam on the level of Trump University. It's certainly disappointing that she would align herself with a 3rd-tier institution and it does put a tarnish on whatever good advice she has offered.

I’m not going to stop going to a coffee shop. I manage my money well, and invest money intensively.
How misleading is a 12% return on your money???? Jeez how disappointing from such an “expert”
12% would be high speculative investing. No one who is struggling wants that kind of risk. She may be doing it though because she has more to play with. I was happy to get 4+% on some bonds last year. She has become increasingly out of touch with the economic realities of the average Joe and Jane.
There are hundreds of worse things to spend your money on than Starbucks. And this is me talking as someone who only goes there once a year or so. I bet Suze spends more getting her hair done than most people spend at Starbucks
Yes - people should watch Rami Sethi instead. He discusses looking at $30k decisions, not $3 ones.
@@SS-rv1mb$3 coffees are $50k decisions when you consider what that amount would be worth invested over 30 years into the sp500 with compound interest. Go search compound interest calculator online and plug in the monthly amount spent on coffee and pretend instead you invest it at 10% return over 30 or even just 20 years.
As a European, I must say Starbucks is not good. If you love coffee make your own, but sometimes buy is at an Italian or Spanish bar / café. Yum!
So I think you missed the point of her conversation. It’s not about Starbucks, she could’ve used any example of how people are spending their money. So what is it that you failed to understand about how money works?

I'm an American from Seattle, I completely agree with you, I despise Starbucks. Too sugary and gross. We have many local coffee shops that are extremely tasty that are not Starbucks. I also enjoy making my own at home.
Suzy Orman is the reason I opened my first Roth retirement account after reading her books years ago. I’m in great shape and so grateful for that now.
Far from wealthy and would never buy Starbucks. If wealthy I would never buy it. Nor do I buy beverages with a meal because they are way overpriced when looking at the restaurant's cost.
I had Starbucks coffee once. Someone bought it for me. It was ok.

She is delusional. I go without everything . No television no coffee, nothing. My truck is twenty years old ect. It doesn't help. Now I have nothing to look forward to. No credit cards. I think she lives in a fantasy world.
She thinks she is talking about the regular person, but she doesn't understand what regular people go through. She even can provide context about regular people but still she clearly doesn't understand. This is what it's like when non-authentic people are given platforms. We should be hearing from actual professionals who study the economy not business people trying to spread some toxic form of anti-consumerism. The economy works by movement of money, so if it were up to her our economy would be frozen. The reality is the business world holds the regular people hostage through debts with high interest rates and hoarding wealth. She's a wealth hoarder, she's part of the problem.
@@noah9552 Hate much? So instead of hating on Susie, perhaps you should start implementing some of the things she’s talking about. Her conversation was not about Starbucks. She could’ve used any of a number examples of what people are doing with their money that perhaps they shouldn’t be doing, like buying an espresso latte every day.
So the problem stems from the fact that most people don’t know anything about how money works, because they haven’t been taught about how it works, therefore, you can’t do that which you don’t know, and so the problem with money is the same as the problem with kids, neither comes with instruction. Capeesh!
You can only cut out so much, eventually you have to find more money somewhere. That's the problem we're facing right now with wage stagnation.
I don't know your situation, I very much empathize with the struggle of trying to make all the necessities fit into a small income. I found out about local programs that help cover heating in the winter and cooling in the summer, some rebate programs that put money back in your pocket while still keeping your home warm. I also found that I could get a much cheaper phone plan that saved me a lot of money.
Cutting out cable and sticking to libraries and free streaming services also helped me save money while still getting to enjoy some fun things.
It's stressful when you don't know where you'll get the money for basics, but sometimes local community resources you don't even know about are available and can be much more helpful that an "expert" like Suz.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here, because I agree with everything you just said, you make so much sense, you’re so practical, you’re so down to earth, and your common sense approach makes so much sense, unfortunately for some, they’re to focused on the messenger, and not on the message, because the message maybe, to matter of fact, and they want this one person to solve all of their problems, by giving them step-by-step directions, and that’s not possible, and it’s not possible because of everything that I’ve just said, that they’re to focused on the messenger, rather than on the message.
So whether it’s susie Orman or someone else, no one can solve your problems, except you, what Susie Orman is attempting to do is to give you some ideas that maybe you haven’t considered.
So she’s not trying to solve everyone’s problems, as no one can do that, and neither should they, because you’re an adult, and it’s your responsibility to solve your own problems, and take care of yourself and your family, and that is not something you can or should outsource to someone else.
So Susie was using Starbucks as an example, and she could’ve used any example, but she simply chose Starbucks, which apparently hit a nerve for some people, because maybe they don’t like Starbucks for some reason, but she just took one example, and said just try doing this one thing, and it’ll make a difference in your life, and so Susie is not the be all, and end all to all your financial problems. She’s just giving you some sound advice using a particular example of how people are wasting the money they already have, while worrying about the money they don’t.
So cloud out all the other stuff, and just concentrate on that one thing she said, and the rest is up to you, not up to Susie, but to you, and so can you stop doing that one thing, which is buying high price coffee at Starbucks, spending to much time and money at the casinos, buying lottery tickets and hanging out at the neighborhood watering hole in your community, just take that one idea, take that money, and redirect it into something productive, that will give you a return on your investment, and too many people don’t understand that either, they don’t understand investments, they don’t understand how it works, and they don’t correctly reason why they need to do it or how they can do it, because they have never been taught how money works, and so I’ve heard all the excuses, from I don’t have any money, or I don’t have enough money, where am I going to get the money to invest?
So what I am hearing are excuses, and excuses are reasons for not doing, that’s the problem, not having the discipline, the determination to get what you want out of life, and so instead of just whining about this and that and the other thing, it just make you sick, and it doesn’t solve anything, and so stop with the complaints, and dumping all your problems on this one person, as they’re not your Lord, and Savior, and they’re not here to solve all your problems.
So, as I said, only you can solve your problems, but you have to first correctly identify what the problems are, because unless you correctly, identify what the problem is, then you can never solve your problems, no matter who you are. It starts with you not someone else, but with you, so if you just listen to the message, concentrate on the message, and not on the messenger, but the message, by asking yourself, what is the message? That’s where you need to start and then you need to ask yourself a question, can I apply that lesson and repeat that lesson, by applying it in a problem solving exercise, crowding out all the distractions/noise?
So we all start out working for someone else, it’s a way to earn a living, and there’s nothing wrong with that, as that’s normally how it works, but if that’s all you do is work for someone else, then you can’t expect to get rich, and you certainly won’t get wealthy by just working a job, and so the only way I know you can get rich/wealthy is to learn to get more value for the money you’re already spending, and redirecting that money into an investment that gives you the greatest return on your money, and stop worrying about the money you hope to have someday. @@theodorehaskins3756 the problem is the message is common sense (save money, dont buy things you dont need) and actually damaging to the economy, and the messenger isn't reading the room or actually in touch with our current issues. she doesn't offer any tips about ways to save money that the average person isn't aware of. this is probably because she represents the very upper class that banks off of us. she may have just been on here to promote her brand and this could just be a deal she made with msnbc. it's actually very likely that is the case.

The “why” is corporate greed. In order to keep up with inflation, our salaries need to keep up. But instead it’s going to billionaires. Most Americans do not buy Starbucks and avocado toast, and definitely not every day. I have a Roth IRA but I don’t see that money until I’m 60. That doesn’t solve the problem of buying what I NEED in the next 5 years - a house, healthcare, education etc. Investing in coffee money is not the solution and it just sounds out of touch. “let them eat cake!”

I am now age 73 and I NOW know exactly where I made my mistake and that was to leave my 24-year-marriage at age 46 with no financial support. I had stayed home to support his career and to raise our two sons, born in 1973 and 1975 21 month's apart I was emotionally bullied and brainwashed by this man into thinking that I cold go out and make a big salary without years of experience. I had $10,000 saved from my small homebased business and knew I needed a new roof and I had to choose between putting on that roof or paying for a lawyer. I choose the roof and a non-contested divorce. This has effected the rest of my life. This was 1985 and there were few resources for helping a woman get a fair square deal after such a long marriage and my ill health (disabling endometriosis.) I paid a huge price for my inexperience and lack of knowledge.
Your mistake was marrying the wrong man. And having 2 kids with him. Be careful who you procreate with. And wanting to believe that you'd be financially OK with no proof of it. Blame your family for not raising you to understand money and spot bad men.

When she married her husband women were not even authorized to have a credit card or their own bank account so please tell me how its her fault that her parents were not psychic and could predict that women would even have the opportunities that are afforded now. @@tori5866 You probably weren't born already by 1973. We weren't all victims. Plenty of women knew how to make a decent living even with limited opportunities, knew how to pick a good man because they were raised by one, and knew how to manage money well because their family depended on them to do so. My mother did it. So did her sisters. So did a lot of women. NEVER depend on anyone else to guide you about money. Educate yourself and know that not even a financial planner that is a fiduciary will be more committed to your current and future financial health than you are.
@Cathy-xi8cb - One day you will learn that there simply is a bad pool of men. All of this "choose better" mantra, is simply missing the point that most men aren't material. For some reason, people don't want to concede the fact that the pool of men to choose from is bad. This woman didn't do anything wrong. Her husband did.
Now, could Ms. Orman explain _why_ nearly half of Americans can't afford to pay in cash for even a relatively minor emergency? How is it possible that the overall economy is doing great but most Americans are not? I mean, when she talked about individual suffering, I almost shouted, "Duh!" But does Trump have it right that it is poor people and immigrants who are sucking all the wealth away from middle-class Americans? Really? If that's not correct, then what is? The average productivity of each American adult is $100,000 a year. Is that what everyone is making? Why is the hedge fund manager becoming a billionaire while nearly half the country doesn't have a spare $500? Why, indeed, is Suze Orman worth $75 million? What exactly does she do that is more important to the nation than what the family farmer or bus driver does? If she doesn't have the answers to those questions, excuse me, but of what use is she as a financial expert? Exactly what skill besides promoting herself, just like Trump, does she have?
Ms. Orman is just pointing out the obvious. How did we get to the point where there is such unequal wealth distribution? How did we get to the point where we don't need family farmers but we need hedge fund managers? And under what system, apparently not capitalism and not communism, both of which are failing or have failed to provide for all the people where each has been tried, can we do better?
It would be nice if Ms. Orman would stop telling us the obvious and saying she doesn't know why it's happened. Worries about war? That's not exactly rocket science either.
As for not wasting money, did that outfit Ms. Orman is wearing come from her own efforts at her own sewing machine? If not, why not? Wasn't it a waste of money to buy it in a boutique? American women used to make the clothes for the family. If she made all her own clothes, how much more money would she have today? Is that what she thinks American women should have to do, like 100 years ago? If so, why should most American women and not Suze Orman? If she had to make all her own clothes, would she have as much free time to write, lecture, show up in Abu Dhabi and accumulate $75 million? She doesn't buy coffee out? Fine. Does she do all her own cooking or does she have a maid? Isn't the maid a waste of money? If she did all her own cooking and cleaning like most Americans have to do, would she have as much free time to write, lecture, show up in Abu Dhabi and accumulate $75 million?

$5 per day at Starbucks is $150 per month. If you decided instead to put your $150 each month into an S&P500 index fund from age 25 to 65 you would end up with $1,500,000. This is why I make Folgers at home for 5 cents a cup. Clear enough????

No one earns 12% interest on anything anymore, and certainly not consistantly - the market flucuates. Suzie's math is wrong. Starbucks is still less than $3 per cup. $3 per day for 40 years at 4% interest is $63507. $8 per coffee for 40yr at 12% interest is $2,930,089. Anyway you calculate, her math is wrong.
But you get her drift--and its a remarkable gain either way you calculate!
I just looked at my 401k. Average of 12.1% over the last 5 years.

I don't know if i really follow her advice. It was always to generalized for me not concrete enough but what i did admire about Suze Orman is that she always looked out for women and geared her advice to other women. For that i appreciated.
It's not hard to save money if you budget wisely. I never eat fast food or buy coffee. The amount of money you can save by not buying convenience for yourself is astounding.
Does Ms. Orman budget wisely? How much do you pay for an outfit, suzanne? How much did Ms. Orman pay for that outfit she was wearing for the interview? But she's not wasting money? Well, if she is, it is the money that people who bought her books, in effect, contributed to the Suze Orman Wealth Fund.
Aren't you sick of being lectured by wealthy people about why you aren't wealthy, implying that they deserve to be?
I do buy fast food. And buy coffee out. And you know what? It doesn’t make a darn bit of difference
People are paying HALF of their income on RENT AND FOOD.....no amount of budgeting can fix that
I don't have the money to be buying tea out and fast food. If I'm lucky, I treat myself to Carl's Jr's Impossible Star meal. That's like once every two months.

I consider myself frugal and I always looked up to Susan Orman. However, I completely disagree with her about not ever buying a coffee because it’s a waste of money!!!! Firstly, we can’t be slaves to money, we have to enjoy our fruits. My biggest issue with the statement about her never spending money on buying a coffee is ridiculous. I believe in supporting businesses, it’s a cycle of life. Imagine we decided we going to make it all ourselves and never support others, how would this build the economy!!! Live a little and Help a little!

I must say that Starbucks coffee has caffeine (or jet fuel) like no other! Not sure what they put in that stuff but it works when you need energy! Some days it may be the only reason your able to work that day!

I can give an example. I am continously laid off so any money I save I have to use. The inflation, school loans, especially being single. Yes finally Suze Orman for Individually. It baffles me when they say the schools don't teach people about money. Well, they do teach basic math . All you have to know is that you shouldn't spend more money than what you have. It just doesn't work. Find a way to spend within your income. Soon you will have left over money. Don't buy some frivolous thing, instead read up on how to invest it sensibly. Schools can't teach everything. Hopefully they teach you to think.

If where you live is crazy or just plain sucks, you need to go outside of that place to find your happy place. For some that is Starbucks. Also, having a coffee maker takes up space to use and store. So here’s the thing about money, no one who has a job will become super rich, if that’s all they do is work for someone else.
So mistake number one is, we follow the example of our parents, who told us to stay in school, get a good education and get a good job working for a good company that pays you a high wage/salary, and stay there for 30 years.
Nothing really wrong with that except this, if you want to become wealthy, not just rich but wealthy. You’re gonna have to do something more than that, and the first thing you should do is learn about how money works, and then learn what to do with the money you already have not the money you’re hoping to have some day.
So think about it this way, if you have your own business/company, and you hired the best employees that you could, how do you want those employees to work? The answer to that question is very important, because, if you make the wrong choices, what happens to your business?
So most businesses will fail, and they will fail for many different reasons, and the same is true of life, as most people will fail in life for a lot of different reasons, but at the heart of every failure, it’s the people who made bad choices that failed, because they made their choices.
So think about the women who married guys who ended up killing them?
That was a bad decision, and likewise, if an employee of your company is caught stealing from the company, and by the time they’re found out the company is forced to filed for bankruptcy, because they’ve run out of cash, and can no longer meet their financial obligations, and so what happens to the employees? They all get fired, right? I mean you can call it a layoff, but the results are the same.
So remember Enron? What happened that caused them to fail? What happened to the employees?
The answer is they all got fired, and the company’s CEO Ken Lay, and the CFO Jeff Skillen was headed to prison, but before Ken Lay got there, he died of a massive heart attack, Jeff Skillen spent a number of years in prison. I believe he’s out now, but the company folded, and all the employees lost your jobs.
So it’s it’s the same result when bad parents, make bad choices for themselves, and their families, and so if you manage your business the way some of you you raise your kids, a lot of businesses are going to go under, because the managers are simply not good at their jobs, and it’s their decision that causes all the problems, because it’s the decision-makers that made the decisions to hire the people they hired, and or didn’t fire when they should’ve fired them or it was the decision makers themselves who should’ve been shown the door, before they led the company into bankruptcy.
So in conclusion, think of your money as your employees, how do you want your employees to work? Well, I don’t know about you, but I want my employees and my money to work smarter not necessarily harder, but smarter, by making the best choices available to them, and if we come together as a team, everyone understanding the mission and what we need to do, we will be successful. I’d say many people struggle with financial planning - I’ve often thought it should be taught in high school along with home ec. (Do they even have home economics classes anymore?)
I don’t agree that women specifically can’t manage finances - many single moms raised their kids, often on low paying jobs. I also take issue with Ms. O’s statement that Americans should be concerned about the wars in Gaza/Isreal and Ukraine/Russia primarily because of its financial impact. I’m not even going to address the Starbucks comment - there are far more more important things that a person should rather die than do.

Women are not financially insecure, and men are not financially secure. INDIVIDUALS are different from one to the next, especially if they were actually taught how to manage their finances. There is an awesome coffee shop in my building with outdoor sitting. I make a coffee from my apartment then go sit outside, my coffee in my mind taste just like the coffee shop and I got my money to buy a fractional share in my investment account.

Because we worked TOGETHER for 55 years for what we have, and in a few years, one or both of us will need to be in a nursing facility. We have no parents or siblings alive. Our only child was killed in a vehicle accident 5 yrs ago. AND I object to paying the cost of a 1/2 can of coffee when he drinks 10 cups a day at home.
