We spent an entire episode reeling from the absence of Damon and Bonnie, and ok Ian was still there playing Elena’s delusions, but so far as we knew, the actual character of Damon was gone forever and we just had to accept that. Elena’s dilemma of being unable to move on is very much framed as not just destructive to herself but selfish as she clings on to someone when even his brother was capable of moving on to some degree. And then we find out that they are, in whatever capacity, very much alive. A thousand questions about how this is possible, and even more about what’s going to become of Elena now the possibility to reunite with him has been established as possible. It really is such a simple but effective hook to keep you invested and watching.
