I've been chatting with a Japanese language exchange partner for orver 2 years now and our secret to keep our friendship going is to chat in a way that's more like "postal-letters". Since both of us are constantly busy and the time zone difference is very big, we usually reply to each other's messages at about every 4 to 5 days. We usually speak about how it is going in life, or our country's problems or traditions, food, games, manga... and such in messages that are longer than usual so that kind of keeps our conversation slow paced but constant, and we never run out of ideas of what to talk about because this way it is like we're having a very prolonged conversation instead of saying "hi, how are you" and running out of things to talk quickly.
Omg same! I also have a Japanese language exchange partner for about 1 year and just like that! I'm not so busy but they are.So I send them a message and a few days or maybe even a week later,they texted back.I'm not mad.But sometimes I think they are not busy and just bored to talk to me. We are in good terms tho
I really like the advice of playing games at language exchanges. It gives an opportunity to actually learn candid Japanese WHILE breaking the ice so you can actually talk about interesting topics. Personally i found that 15% of my Japanese speaking/listening came from language exchanges, and 85% from making friends with people at the exchanges and just practicing on our own time while hanging out. Making friends is the MOST important thing you can do!! 🤧
I think the romantic part which you talk about is so true. I’ve had heard so many times of people confessing on HelloTalk and I get the question “do you have a boyfriend” a lot which is why I decided to change my setting to only talk to the same gender… it’s like you’re not interested in language exchange after some time, because you’re able to communicate anyways

The uses of よう, it's also something a lot of japanese learners struggle to understand. 3. Maybe you could make a video about your favorite japanese snacks so when we'll come to Japan we would be excited to try them out!

Thank you, it was interesting. :) I have a good Japanese friend I met online and we've been chatting in English with some sentences in Japanese (because my level is low, around N5-4) and after some months we decided to do videocall once a week. It's been so much fun, we are talking in English most of the time but never had a problem with what to talk about. We regularly watch some anime videos with subtitles and we try to play some language exchange games (like explaining a thnig in other language, guessing the other persons character, guessing which sentence about him is true or false), but I have to say I am afraid to speak Japanese because my level is too low, so I get embarrassed I don't know much of the language. :D but so far it's been great experience and I can say it's better and better. :)
I've been learning Japanese for a few months now and it's been a rocky, but fun journey! Language exchange sounds like a cool and fun thing to do, but I'm not good at talking to others (or making foreign friends) about ideas like: "hey I had this idea, wanna be a part of it?" usually because either the person doesn't have time, I make it sound weird (I try my best not to but I'm bad with communication, thanks introversion), or the person doesn't seem interested. Oh wow, this video came at the perfect time! I did a virtual language exchange from about late October to mid December this past year with another student from my university, and a student from a Japanese university. I totally agree with how adding in games can be a big help; I tried to incorporate as many games over the course of our exchange and I think it helped to bridge the language barrier. In terms of actually practicing the language, I do think we're on similar levels of comprehension, I just get flustered or tongue-tied when speaking, so I often revert back to English or Japanese-English hybrid LOL. Fortunately, our Japanese partner is studying abroad at the university we're at, so we'll have a lot more opportunities to improve on speaking, and become even better friends. おのまっぷさん、教えてくれてありがとう！それで、あけおめ！

It is hard for me because how do you actually start speaking it? You need to learn enough to start speaking but then you are limited, then you will need to keep learning. Its like the egg and the chicken. Which comes first, you learn and then practice, but you need to practice to learn. Maybe i am just rushing myself..

Yep that's absolutely true what you said in the third part. Some people just don't care about their partner's speaking skills of their language and just use them as a medium to speak that language. This makes the another person lose interest in learning. ちなみにあなたは人との交流がとても上手です

I really like the idea of playing games for language exchange but it's so tough to find people to do so. T.T I've recently been participating in a language exchange program online and I was able to meet many Japanese native speakers. While it's a good experience, I feel like I'm lacking so much. I have no issues understanding what they say, but I just can't articulate well what I want to say. The vocabulary magically disappears when it's my turn to speak T.T
Relate on this! I only have one language exchange partner and everytime it's my turn to speak (in Japanese), it seems that the amount of vocabulary that I know suddenly becomes the basic ones.
this happens for me as well, more reading out loud and being comfortable with patterns for speaking has been very helpful so far. Easier said than done, but not being hung up on being correct all the time is helpful as well.
Don't worry too much about this! It's just what speaking in foreign languages is like. The vocabulary you can easily use while speaking will grown on its own if you continue!

Do anybody knows anywhere I can actually find language partners? I am 16 year-old brazilian boy, and I am currently learning Japanese, and I also accept English, because it's a very interesting language that I want to expand my knowledge on, I tried Discord already but I am too shy to enter the audio chat with lots of other people. Let me elaborate, English, for example, is not my native language, I learned it during the COVID pandemic alone in my room, I spent about 2 years learning it, and I'm pretty advanced at it, I can understand anything I read or listen, I can write, I even read some scientific papers in English, but I never got the chance to speak to someone in English, so my speaking skills, and pronunciation are pretty bad, and lately I realized that a knowing a language without being able to speak it properly is a waste of actual potential. And due to the fact that I am under age, and my parents don't travel at all, I never got the chance to go to any other country that speaks a language different from my native one (which is actually Portuguese, I live in Brazil 😉), and I am really passionate about languages, and really wanted to have more opportunities to speak to other people using foreign languages, and when I talk to people, I actually like to befriend them, that may be a problem 😂, but if somebody knows anywhere I can find people to practice speaking besides these apps where you talk to native teachers, or even if somebody here in the chat want to talk to me just tell me, and thanks in advance, my comment may be too long but if you had the patience to read until here, I love ❤you, may god bless your life...

I still don't speak Japanese. I just learned words and a few expression from anime. But I could notice a difference when Hitoki started to speak tameigo. There is no "masu", "mashita", "desu". Sounds more like normal character from any anime xD

I think I have never learned faster than playing, also the bond you make with the people is great, I taught a German friend how to play with a rubbik cube and that night we also play cards in french and it was unforgettable, you all should try :3

I really like the idea of playing games for language exchange but it's so tough to find people to do so. T.T I've recently been participating in a language exchange program online and I was able to meet many Japanese native speakers. While it's a good experience, I feel like I'm lacking so much. I have no issues understanding what they say, but I just can't articulate well what I want to say. The vocabulary magically disappears when it's my turn to speak T.T
Relate on this! I only have one language exchange partner and everytime it's my turn to speak (in Japanese), it seems that the amount of vocabulary that I know suddenly becomes the basic ones.
this happens for me as well, more reading out loud and being comfortable with patterns for speaking has been very helpful so far. Easier said than done, but not being hung up on being correct all the time is helpful as well.
Don't worry too much about this! It's just what speaking in foreign languages is like. The vocabulary you can easily use while speaking will grown on its own if you continue!

Do anybody knows anywhere I can actually find language partners? I am 16 year-old brazilian boy, and I am currently learning Japanese, and I also accept English, because it's a very interesting language that I want to expand my knowledge on, I tried Discord already but I am too shy to enter the audio chat with lots of other people. Let me elaborate, English, for example, is not my native language, I learned it during the COVID pandemic alone in my room, I spent about 2 years learning it, and I'm pretty advanced at it, I can understand anything I read or listen, I can write, I even read some scientific papers in English, but I never got the chance to speak to someone in English, so my speaking skills, and pronunciation are pretty bad, and lately I realized that a knowing a language without being able to speak it properly is a waste of actual potential. And due to the fact that I am under age, and my parents don't travel at all, I never got the chance to go to any other country that speaks a language different from my native one (which is actually Portuguese, I live in Brazil 😉), and I am really passionate about languages, and really wanted to have more opportunities to speak to other people using foreign languages, and when I talk to people, I actually like to befriend them, that may be a problem 😂, but if somebody knows anywhere I can find people to practice speaking besides these apps where you talk to native teachers, or even if somebody here in the chat want to talk to me just tell me, and thanks in advance, my comment may be too long but if you had the patience to read until here, I love ❤you, may god bless your life...

siempre me ha interesado la idea de tener un compañero de intercambio para aprender un idioma, inglés principalmente, pero siempre me da miedo que no termine bien por cualquier motivo, aparte de que si en mi propio idioma se me hace difícil encajar con la gente debería ser aún más con la que no comparto casi absolutamente nada más que medio idioma aprendido que no he puesto en práctica, en la escuela no funcionaba mucho porque no muchos se lo toman en serio y siempre he sentido que sería más desafiante con alguien que tenga una cultura completamente diferente, creo que voy a volverlo un propósito para este año

Great video, especially the part about making it fun. When encountering an unkown word, in order to not break the flow of conversation I found it useful to not look up every word.
Even when it means that you don't catch a sentence, you can still make use of the other ones, which makes it more fun. But I have also done the opposite way, looked up most, which was very effective in learning. What are your thoughts on it?

I still don't speak Japanese. I just learned words and a few expression from anime. But I could notice a difference when Hitoki started to speak tameigo. There is no "masu", "mashita", "desu". Sounds more like normal character from any anime xD
