I've only visited Australia twice - and only now in my 60's so I thank my Oz tutor in an airport bookshop for pointing me to 'Breath'. This pom begins to understand and envy and be glad to take home this wonderful book and the after taste of Winton's writing.

Angelus is based on Albany, Western Australia, which is where Tim Winton grew up..

I just read the book and although it has its own merits I think the feel good hype around the film is misplaced. The book is NOT about an older surfer "mentoring and guiding two younger guys in a fatherly manner", but rather about a man and his wife both entering a mid life and marriage crisis, using two youngsters to relive their own dreams and fulfil their own needs, amounting to an abuse of both of the boys in different ways. One succumbs to the mantra of "you can be what you want to be, the sky is the limit and you need no boundaries" philosophy , and the other comes to his senses and refuses to be drawn into someone else' s fantasy of eternal youth and hope, trusting in what is right for himself. Simon Baker himself says the two ( film and book) are in essence different mediums and that they must be interpreted as such. The film has not been released yet, and may never surface in South Africa, but I would be interested to see it in its entirety. Taking into account Baker's own childhood and upbringing, it will be revealing to see how much he uses the story to deal with his own demons.

read the book...I loved it...the best I read so far...but I can't seem to locate that village named Sawyer anywhere on the map...or the town named Angelus...but the book I read was in Slovene..I hope that they didn't mix up at translating...
