You nailed it. I know there is a lot of talks in the Nirvana community right now of specific speakers and aluminum guitars, but you showed here that you can 100% get In Utero tone with the jag, fender amp and the Sansamp Awesome video
Behringer TM300 is an affordable clone of the Sansamp GT2 and is a great affordable option to get you in the neighborhood of Nirvana's live sound circa '93.
Nice video. Your amp EQ is pretty on point - I find cranking the mids, cutting out reverb, and leaving the treble and bass relatively flat (around 5/10 - depending on the amp, I might tweak them but they usually stay within the 4-6 range) a good shortcut for Nirvana clean tones. That alone goes a long way to getting that spanky, "rude" sound that people seem to either love or hate. I own the same Fender Jag (got it back in like 2011/2012 - presumably someone didn't realize it was a signature model, because I found it in the 'used' section of a Guitar Center, bought it, then got it home and opened the case and realized it still had all the original documentation and paperwork and stuff still shrink wrapped in plastic inside) and it's an amazing guitar all-around, not just for Nirvana stuff. Something about the shorter scale on it (Jaguars and Mustangs are 24" while practically every other Fender guitar model is 25.5") gives more of a percussive quality to its sound that's subtle, but key, imo. I tend to leave the volume/tone knobs on mine all the way up, but I also tend to run it through a ProCo Rat for distortion and a Vox amp instead of a Fender - just personal taste preferences - so I assume I'm getting a darker default output sound than you are from a Fender Twin Silverface - plus both the Rat and Vox have pretty good knobs for filtering out excessive high end. Have you listened to any other albums that Steve Albini has produced? The obvious relevant example would be Surfer Rosa by The Pixies, which was allegedly the main album that made Nirvana seek him out to produce In Utero. He also recorded PJ Harvey's 2nd album, Rid of Me, like a month or two before In Utero, in the same studio and everything, so it sounds VERY reminiscent of In Utero at times. He allegedly even sent an early mix of it to Kurt Cobain as a sort of demo as to what they might expect the production on In Utero to sound like, if they worked with him. Would definitely be worth looking into, if you're interested in that kind of thing. p.s. I'm jealous that your 'bedroom amps' consist of at least a Fender Silverface Twin Reverb and a Marshall JCM800....
Hey thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah the silver face twin is a very bright amp so keeping the treble down is quite important especially at lower volume. With the Mesa and Marshall cab I usually keep the treble and mids cranked and the bass around 3. The graphic EQ on that amp is essential for a lot of the live tones IMO, along with the right speakers (my cab has late 80s T75s). My Jaguar isn’t the Kurt signature. It’s one I got custom built to be more reminiscent of an actual 60s jag with the Cobain mods. I have a video on it called ‘Sound of the 90s’ if you want more info! Yes I’m a huge Pixies fan and know quite a few albums recorded by Steve. I think he’s an amazing audio engineer! Appreciate your support :)
Nice stuff! I never knew you could record live with Audacity, I'm gonna have to maybe give up the tape deck finally! Seriously though, really nice tone.
The really nice thing about Kurt's sound is that you do not have to spend a million in order to get results. I also like Joy Division and Dead Kennedys. And Zappa, and Gilmour...and some Hendrix...😎
i thing that you dont have to put mids up to 10 cause you can definitely hear how distortion just eats itself causing just less drive in the sound. From what i know kurt usually did 8-9 treb 7-8 mid and like 5 bass but varies
Hi, Thanks for the comment! Yea the distortion here is a bit darker than the album, but I can't get it exact. My amp doesn't have the same speakers or configuration as the In Utero Quad. Mids on 10 is what sounds closest in the room so that's what I stuck with
@@wastewoodrockers5526 i d really like to hear it on tge settings i provided, cause i tried it many times and it sounds fine even on my amp, or on any simulation amp
Great video, it sounded very close to the album. I was thinking the other day, maybe a danelectro 59 would sound kinda similar to the veleno bc of the lipstick pickups, maybe it's a cool try, idk.
@@asyouwalk2847 mine hasn't been adjusted from factory, and it's probably 2-3cm from the top of the Super Distortion to my strings on the top and bottom. my neck pickup is seated a bit further into the body... best i can describe it is my neck pickup sits relatively flush with its frame - the SD in the bridge rises up just enough for the pickup covers to extend past the frame to be fully visible if i'm looking straight at it from above or below. both sides seem even. like where the rounded edge of the cover would give way to being able to see the tape/wrap is right where it meets the frame. idk if these are technically "correct" but have always worked for me. i think most pickups are set 2-4cm from the strings, although i know some people who recommend literally raising your pickup until its in contact with all 6 strings, then slowly lowering each side little by little until you find the "sweet spot" that sounds good to you. so long as they're not raised so high that your strings are hitting them, it's really up to you.
@@asyouwalk2847apologies for the late reply here but all it will do it increase the signal level being output from the guitar, it won’t change the tone itself. Theres a bunch of factors that affect a guitars sound which is why they all sound different, mainly I’d check the setup and make sure your action isn’t too low. Kurt kept his pretty high which gives the strings a much less loose feel. You can also try using flatwound strings if you find regular round wound strings too bright etc… Hope this helps!
It’s just a cheap vocal mic stand. Really all it’s doing is holding the mic straight. Mostly, the mic is holding itself up. I really need a good stand for mic’s.
Sure! That would be cool, there’s not a lot too it though apart from having your amp pretty loud and standing close by. If you mean RFUS specifically, sure I can do a tutorial on that!

I love how your jaguar sounds! Its sounds like the mix between the studio and live tone.
Sounds cool, man. Thanx for the video.
Sounds great! Love the light for attracting attention poster thing, that album is phenomenal!

Can I ask the height of your bridge pickup is set? I can't get mine to sound like this for some reason.
I’m not sure, but I doubt that’s the reason yours sounds different. Pickup height doesn’t really effect the sound
@@wastewoodrockers5526 You don't think pickup height alters the sound of the pickup? I find it greatly impacts the tone of a pickup.

I can say the personality, there’s some similarities but he looks more like Nick Valensi from The Strokes and also like my high school classmate 😅
Nothin like him
No
It's just the hair lol 😂 I don't see it at all.
