The way they discuss Tails' fall from grace in Forces, almost implying that he suffers from Imposter Syndrome and maybe even a degree of self-loathing, is genuinely upsetting and makes that once embarrassing scene actually kind of sad in retrospect.
That coming of age self-doubt has always been a part of his character, but it's especially interesting to see that manifest as a moment of failure/defeat. I love this framing!
And all of this is implemented into an 8 year old child

Also... he's kind of that age range where you start doubting and hating yourself, at least mentally. No idea how old any of the characters are anymore, but at least mentally, Tails seems like a young teen and would absolutely share those struggles of doubt and self-loathing.

The fact that Eggman acknowledges that Tails can rival him, but is often held back by his worship of Sonic is such a cool character detail. Like, he knows Tails could be a serious threat if he didn't hide behind Sonic a lot of the time.

@@ingram4056 I hope so. I'm thinking his gameplay would be like sonic adventure 1&2 combined with his ring arsenal from 06 and sky patrol. He should have the spin dash and his tail attacks, and should be fast but deal less damage in contrast to amy dealing more damage but hits slower. Tails gizmos and ring weapons should deal more damage, but it has balance with his own physical strength.
If tails get a boost state like sonic, i want it to have like a spinning aura around him while glowing. Like the ultra form from archie sonic or the skills from arknights.

Reframing Tails inconsistent writing as a character trait, focussing on how young he is and making it a point of reflection for future growth was a stroke of genius. It's one of those things that seems so obvious I'm surprised I've never heard anyone suggest it.
Ian Flynn is a genius when it comes to repurposing and redeeming messy or unpopular plot points, incorporating them into the narrative in a positive way instead of shying away. It's awesome that he can course-correct like that while also not leaving anyone out.
@@Lunchbillion He's been doing it literally his entire career, right out of college he was hired as head writer to fix the mess Ken Penders had created at Archie, and he did it with minimal retcons and no reboot until it was forced a decade later by Penders himself.

No one suggested it probably because it was so obvious and kinda flawed. But since Ian Flynn, Morio Kishimoto and (I forget the third guy’s name) decided it in this game that can do no wrong, it’s genius now.
Penny's voice acting is so good I legitimately get startled sometimes bc sometimes I think it's someone else.

I just discovered Snapcube through the fandubs and I had no idea Penny was a woman when she was voicing Sonic. Even now I still have a hard time believing it hearing her regular voice. Her vocal range is phenomenal.

Addressing the Sonic Forces reviled Tails moment and reframing it as an incident that spurs the character's introspection is a work of brilliance. I bet some Forces viewers had previously said "nah, screw that, didn't even happen."
Reframing poor story choices as meaningful in the context of future, better characterization is *always* better than just ignoring it.

There's a possible view of the overall story where Tails accidentally giving away the fake emerald in SA2 slowly but surely set him down the path of questioning his own judgment, never being confronted on his self-trust issues, and eventually spiraling into an abyss of uncertainty and inhibition.
Forces doesn't have it- Tails is just a pathetic little coward to those writers- but it exists.
That last part was almost what I said “you guys acknowledged-the massacre of my boy here instead of skipping around it?” But the fact they take advantage of it-acknowledging the poor writing choice as inconsistent as running with it as characterization I realized was a ballsy but well done move.
It’s one of the rare times acknowledging the bad writing and incorporating it into the writing worked to their advantage (looking at you MLP-acknowledging you making a character learn the same lesson multiple times isn’t excusable)

I keep saying it but it’s true cause holy fuck we’ve never had much on Eggman’s views on Maria and not only that, it gives a perspective of his childhood where he and his talents were ignored because his family was grieving and neglected him. That’s why he wants to conquer the world or build an amusement park. He wants his name plastered everywhere so people knows him and his genius. But the fact he wonders if Sage is like Maria makes me think that if he met Maria even once, would he still be the same or would she have been the one to acknowledge him and encouraged him to follow Gerald’s path of using that intelligence to better the world?
It does look like there is SOME good in eggman even if he doesn't want to believe it.
Which makes me believe if he despises Sonic because like Knuckles, I think he envies Sonic because unlike Eggman, Sonic has friends who always help him
As the other characterization moments in Frontiers and moments in the other games shows, Eggman wants to do so much evil but is inherently held back by the fact that deep down hes a good person who just got pushed away by those he needed. He doesn't enjoy it, but he does team up with Sonic quite a lot when he's not the big bad.

The idea that Maria, who he believed was the favorite of everyone else, would be the one to support him could make or break that situation.
I can't begin to explain how happy I am that Tails has a personality again and isn't in the game just out of necessity.
Ian Flynn using his experience as a comic writer to once again take a bunch of very different portrayals of the same character, done by different writers and in stories with wildly different tones, and then somehow tie every portrayal into one satisfying new portrayal that not only takes into account every contradictory action but builds them together into a more satisfying and compelling character

I honestly really like that they still acknowledge that stuff like Lost World and Forces still happened. Instead of just forgetting about those games' weird characterization and whatnot, they used them to develop Tails here.
More like fixed the terrible characterization by presenting a narrative in which something like that would actually feasibly happen instead of saying "Chaos 4, no problem, Chaos 0, problem".
@@ModernAegis Chaos 4 was still a problem for Tails, all evidences suggests he didn't actually play much of a role in that fight and if he did, it was with the combined efforts of Sonic and Knuckles by his side. The first half of Tails' story in Adventure is him glamorizing it in his head before being seperated from Sonic and losing some of that confidence, and then slightly regaining it by the end of the game. He's an unreliable narrator there until he's alone. I feel like there's definitely been missteps in Tails' characterization (Lost World in particular) but I have a particular gripe with how ppl keep framing it like it's unreasonable that Tails would take issue with being confronted with Chaos when he was entirely alone and had his confidence shot from Sonic being missing lol
(This isn't to say Forces had like, great characterization or anything, it was still very rough and not helped by the fact that there was no time to develop anything going on, but I don't get the chaos gripe in particular and I don't see how it's any worse than like, Unleashed for instance)
Develop? Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were pretty much just factory reset to their Adventure 1 ending characterizations in this game. They've looped back around to the beginning.

Tails feels a lot more confident here than he did at the beginning of Adventure 1, Knuckles and Sonic have a pretty tangible relationship here that developed since then, and Amy has grown completely past the character she was back then. This might just be me, but I full heartedly disagree there.

It’s a bit awkwardly cut here, but Sonic actually looks up at Sage for a few seconds (like he doesn’t know why she wants to know that) showing that was a genuine answer and not a sarcy joke on his part. If you stand still for a while, you get idle voicelines kinda like the Adventure games. Sonic's, though, get progressively more _concerning_ as he progresses through the islands, illustrating the deterioration that the cyber corruption is wreaking.

I was genuinely sad at Tails saying he was leaving for a while- made worse by the fact Sonic is trying to downplay the fact he’s hurt, basically dying, and his buddies are leaving him one by one but all he cares about is their happiness. That scene freaking broke me!
Because you KNOW that he really is happy for them!! But god he’s so *tired,* that you can tell it’s hard to not let it sting.

I have no explanation for why I love that live and delivery so much.
As cool as it would’ve been to have a section in this game for Shadow or the others, but this story scaling the characters down to really nail the dynamic of Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Eggman (and kind of tying all that up with a bow) feels very necessary. Maybe we can check in with the other characters another time, but that “classic cast” really benefitted from being a sole focus.
100% agree. After all these years mishandled or on the backburner, a game that truly gives the core cast the love they deserve was much needed and appreciated. Now that Frontiers has done right by them, we can move onto other characters without feeling like the most important characters have been neglected.
And we also got to have Sage as our new character, which was refreshing!

I haven’t seen the ending of the game, but seeing as they’re establishing that Amy, Knux, and Tails want to go their separate ways for self fulfillment, it would be the prime opportunity to share some of that development with the rest of them in a later game

Exactly this. Too often I see media bloating itself with too many characters just for the sake of fan service and it's aggravating. Dial it back, use the limited number of characters necessary to tell a good grounded story, and it will turn out ok. I'd expect the next game after Frontiers to build something different by using other characters we missed this time around while giving others a break.

Honestly, the Sage scene made me really emotional the first time I saw it. I started loving her character in this scene, and she's my favorite Sonic character now.

Also Tails saying "Then I'm wildly inconsistant !" is the most meta line of this whole game and I love it ^^
Y'know, I really liked how the movie portrayed Sonic as *not* a snarky little asshole that tries to be cool all the time. And I feel the same way in this game. He actually sounds genuinely concerned about his friends, and is taking the situation seriously, with the snark only being on the side. I greatly respect this direction.
I like that on top of just fixing him, they address that Tails is in fact a child, and everyone needs help sometimes.
The fact that they fixed tails and gave so many characters the much needed reset in terms of development is more than enough for Frontiers to be in my top five favorite Sonic games.
Ian Flynn is the hero Sonic team needed but could never deserve; now they just need to loosen the reins on him so he can show what his writing's truly capable of

Ian makes the Sonic world feel like a world and not just a bunch of adventures with little continuity. His writing acknowledges all of the enemies Sonic's fought. It remembers the lore and family behind Knuckles and Eggman. It focuses on how Tails was more than just the smart guy back in the Adventure era but suddenly has been reduced to a hyperdependant kid in the Modern era. It keeps the earlier games in mind when it writes its story, to help build the idea that they and what happened in them matter in the current time.
He's an awful writer.

I didn't realize Tails' comment about how he's "wildly inconsistent" was a multi-layered line, hearing it the first time around. I originally thought it was just him being humble/doubtful of himself. But hearing it a second time, it really is the writers judo flipping a continuity error into a character trait!

Essestianlly, what Ian Flynn did is make Tails an apologist by shifting the blame from bad writing in Sonic Forces onto Tails so the fox can say he's "inconsistent" as if that was ever a recurring problem with Tails. Sonic Forces was the only time where Tails acting like a complete coward but Ian over exaggerated it so he can please fans. Even worse is that Ian ripped off Tails' arc from Sonic Adventure and misinterpreted it heavily. Basically, Tails learnt that he needed to not be so reliant on Sonic and step up during the time where it mattered. But in Sonic Frontiers, Tails thinks that he needs to "independence" and stop being Sonic's sidekick for a while. Pretty bad writing in my books.

I dealt with that awkward drift level by straight-up ignoring the drift pads. I just jumped over every one and ran to the goal. I legit completed every challenge by doing that, and it was hilarious.

With each character pretty much saying they want to do a few things on their own after this, I kinda hope Frontiers gives them their own DLC stories where you play as them. I wanna punch some shit with Knuckes, Fly and use crazy advanced tech with Tails, smash shit with Amy's hammer, etc. Plus it would be a welcome sight to see their Super Forms if they ever decide to do that.!

Personally, actually, I'm like 99% sure they're building up to Adventure 3 with this. Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles on separate journeys that eventually converge. That's basically how SA1 worked.

I like how when tails mentioned infinite in front of sonic they show that sonic never found out what happened to tails after he was taken and before he came back, and Tails is most likely never going to tell him because he changed the subject. Sonic only knows of what happened before he was knocked out and taken and when he came back and tails flew in and hugged him it was safe to assume that tails missed him but that was it. He has no clue that tails lost his shit.

As long as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are around - Sega, and fans, will expect their inclusion in a game. Even if it’s to the detriment or exclusion of the other established characters.
I suspect the plan is to have these characters “strike off on their own” - so Ian Flynn can write in his own characters (Tangle, Whisper) or revisit neglected characters (Blaze, Silver)

I know I’m kinda late to this, but I really love the conversations with Tails. He’s probably my favorite character in the franchise. Honestly, even with all the glitches and stuff, this is probably one of the best Sonic games so far. But also, I hope that sonics friends are still gonna be in the series. Their conversations made me kinda worried. But I guess we’ll just have to see.
I'm getting the impression that Frontiers is kind of a new take on the themes of SA1.
SA1 was all about growing up. Characters learned to rely on themselves, to have their own values, to question their parents, their identity (does e-102 gamma is trans?). Chaos' continual growth into new forms reflects this theme. So does the introduction of the Chao gardens, where you can develop and raise Chao from infancy. Makes sense for their audience: the kids who played Sonic 1-3 were getting older, having to think about these things.
Frontiers comes at it from the other direction: being the parent. Tails and Amy don't just decide they need to do things on their own or be more independent, they tell Sonic directly, with you in his role. The setting reflects this theme, being all that's left of this precursor race and what it left behind for future generations. Eggman is experiencing fatherhood with Sage. One of the first missions you do is unite a parent Koco with its offspring. And again, this makes sense if the kids who played Sonic 1-3 are in their 30's-40's now and have kids of their own.
I think that's a really brilliant way to circle back to old ideas while still making something that's new and relevant.
Once I found out that they were actually fixing Amy tails and knuckles I shed a tear. After so many games of them just being in the background and kind of sort of not doing much of anything unless your names were some of the other games and re releases, it is great to have the characters actually act like characters.
