Modern cars are computers with motors, sensors and actuators, not your simple black and red wires anymore! Given that each generation becomes more software driven, I can see where, in the short future (5-10 years), only the dealer would be able to do, replace or repair anything that connects, or interacts with the main computer (ECM). Basically, everything but the wheels, brakes, tires and simple switches or lights. Yes, it’s all software, so there is always a way, but with encryption, blockchain and one time tokens, gets much harder to ‘copy’ or reverse engineer.

This is exactly why my newest car is a 2002. If I ever get one newer it won't be one with all the computer junk. Just too much stuff to go wrong that can't be fixed by the average DIYer.

I would assume to keep the warranty maybe? The ground is supposed to come from the BCM and complete circuits for at least 4 sensors. It's a can of worms otherwise. Owner might've voided everything with his shenanigans. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
The bcm isn't supplying the ground to the devices -- but does the bcm have a good ground to send out? Should bcm powers and grounds have been verified? I realize all other functions of the bcm still work, but Ivan just posted a video where a fuse was loose and only a few small operations of the module had failed.
Yes...once again I did this video rather quickly on the fly. I did verify P&G supplies. But thank you for bringing up a great point I missed in the video.
If the BCM (or any of the computers) controls anything by switching the ground, it's probably using N-channel mosfets. N channel mosfets are easy to drive high current devices from a microcontroller, but they're only rated for so much current. If you put too much current through them (by using that controlled ground as a general ground for a high current thing), the mosfet will blow up, and then the computer can't provide ground anymore. Low side switching (switching the ground side of something) is cheaper, as it only takes one mosfet. High side switching (controlling the power side) takes 2 mosfets, so when possible most things are low side switched as it saves cost in the BCM (or ECM / PCM etc). Sure, mosfets are only a few cents, but why use 2 when you can use just one! The BCM could probably be repaired by putting new mosfets in it - only takes a few minutes if you have the right soldering equipment, and of course, if it's not potted.
The blame here should not be on aftermarket parts but a single incompetent owner, or an “idiot” friend of his. I highly doubt this was done at a specialty shop. Look at that spiffy blue tubing, my belly tells me the owner bought that off of eYay and its all a self install. Most shops just carry black tubing not that stupid colored “look at my looms!” jazz. The factory horn is a straight shot circuit after +12v comes out of the factory relay. Swapping it out with another to change tone should cause no codes whatsoever unless your trying to wire something like a freight train horn that exceeds the amperage draw on the factory circuit. I would have to guess when the idiot added the gizmo horn either somehow backfed +12v down that BCM ground feed (I cant fathom why) or tied the gizmo horn ground into that. That add-on horn works like a tiny car amplifier and may have pulled high current through that ground feed circuit which its most likely not designed for, thus damaging it. For me this is such a mind blowing fail as this is such a simple 2 or 3 wire hook-up. Even though that toy horn is a cheap China POS, it still could have been installed with no interference to the vehicle itself. Once again, aftermarket parts and installers are not all to blame here for the incompetence of a single blithering idiot. I never knew about this restricted “gateway” thing until now, what a load of utter bs, surprised that does not infringe on right to repair.

Probably connected the power from the horn to the signal ground, thus sending god knows how many amps into the signal ground of the BCM. The weak link wasn't the horn fuse but the BCM.

I work at a parts store, so I get to see all kinds of stupid shit like this before it comes to you guys. I had a couple kids (under 25) with a 2016 Caddy that had decided to throw a couple of el cheapo "go fast" parts on like a "cold air" intake, a "chip" (resistor), and a canned tune. There was a CEL and it ran like GARBAGE! I knew what was going on based on the codes our shitty scanner gave me before looking at the car... "Did you put a custom intake on it? What about an IAT mod?" "... Uh... Well yeah!" I got visibly distraught. Their work involved wire nuts and hot glue. That is all.
I have looked at the video to about 4 minutes and the owner should not be allowed to drive a truck never mind own one I think he or she would be better off with a bike! We would all be safer.

I expect the generic instructions say you need to connect to the hood latch to trigger the alarm/horn.
Probably connected the power from the horn to the signal ground, thus sending god knows how many amps into the signal ground of the BCM. The weak link wasn't the horn fuse but the BCM.
Shauns Auto Repairs, 100% correct...but they sent 12 v to the BCM ground.
@Jernej Jakob, that is correct sir.
This is going to be an expensive lesson learned.
I bet your diagnosis , a dealer BCM and dealer repair and programming is headed towards $ 1000.00 ! That's an expensive horn ! That REALLY BLOWS ! And how about the Butcher of Baghdad who cuts the harness in a 2020 for this crap ? Give him some Scotch Locks and butt connectors so he can go damage more vehicles .
Hey, most of my referrals come from friends and friends of friends!
Yep, ours as well.
Nice !

Today is 9/17/2020 : If someone would have brought a darn Model Year 2020 to me with this Bafoonery , I would have immediately start crying & Ran him Off & told 'em he should be "Tarred & Feathered" for allowing this Bafoonery.
God Bless You.

Can't wait till cars fly...
2:00 in thinking 🤔 of My time at Chrysler Dealership... Vehicle Software updates on modules? 🤔
Still watching
Soo all circuits so far are having grounding issues. Interesting 🧐 I just learned of that New Gateway module talking with J aka Welding Junkie
Will all scan tools drop in and out because of the new security module?
Ooohh dang... it took out the BCM? That Sucks.
Lol... 2020. Already has ABS codes .... AND needs a BCM due to being an idiot. Might be able to get away with keeping that ground there, but that would only be on my personal vehicle. No way to guarantee that repair.
Exactly my thoughts Cuba!
Why on earth would someone install an aftermarket horn on an expensive new vehicle like this?
Tiny penis.
It's not like they own the thing, they just rent it from the bank anyways - that's why most people don't give a shit about anything, it's not _actually_ theirs
@Gorak9000, which is why this truck, like many other vehicles, will be someone's headache in three years.
👍👍
I would expect 2020 to be under factory warranty.... Unless it's salvage vehicle.
Won't be under warranty once you cut a harness and install that stuff.
Very expensive lesson. If ain't broke don't fix it..

Everybody wants to buy a vehicle and make changes right away. Free friend work is not free anymore. Was just at a buddies ship the other day. Keeps with I put my own extra lights on and the writing is going to fail. Can see it’s already rubbing and going to go short one day.
Good thing I ended up not buying a 2020 Jeep bullet dodged. They want to freeze out independent shops
This is not only Jeep.
@@JoesAutoElectric uh oh does Lexus do the same thing? So that you need top security clearance to get into the obd?
I hacked into my wiring harness; and now it doesn't work. Great. Do you know what this customer was trying to accomplish with this nonsense?
Installing that aftermarket horn shown in the beginning. Lol
@2:20 in the video
Just like you said Joe....don't touch it it's too complicated and for what?!? A freakin horn!!!!!!!!
Why is the owner not going to a dealer for a new car hold on i just answer my own question it should have been stellar ship my bad!!!
nice work Joe. Why the fuck would someone install that horn on that car?!!!!!!
My son has one. What a piece of shit. He got stuck twice. They took forever to get the parts. They tried to blame him because he put a better radio in it. I forget what broke. They covered it bu t he had to fight them.
I know it *says* Jeep on it. But....
Dodge needs a class action lawsuit for this secure gateway module garbage.
Wo men
at 8 minutes in i figured he'd fried the driver in the bcm.. now we are locking down with gateway modules?? guess i'm done buying new crap.
Yes sir..taking things way too far in my opinion...and added cost will be a direct reflection to the customer.
What about an IAT mod?"
"... Uh... Well yeah!"
I got visibly distraught.
Their work involved wire nuts and hot glue.
That is all.
People can and will fuck anything up
I have looked at the video to about 4 minutes and the owner should not be allowed to drive a truck never mind own one I think he or she would be better off with a bike! We would all be safer.
The secure gateway module is BS. What a greedy use of technology. You have to pay a fee and get permission? No...
Apparently because of vehicle theft...but i have my own thoughts on reasons for this. I am sure it will come to light soon enough if I am correct.
@@JoesAutoElectric You can buy a gateway module bypass. It allows you to connect your scan tool beyond the gateway. It is a second obd2 port installed past the gateway.
Frustrating Joe .Good Diag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
