    Interesting timing for this video Joe. I've had a '15 Trax for a year and dislike the horn. I've even looked for one multiple times. We have a 2018 Jeep Compass (in our shop) with aftermarket touch screen has constant start fail due to dead battery. Install factory radio no battery drain. I don't understand the mindset that you buy a late model vehicle change the factory setup, buy all your junk on Crutchfield ( they sold this person the wrong interface for the Can system. Also with aftermarket, odometer was flashing which indicates a problem in communication with BCM. Happens a lot more than you think, I can't be to upset, it provides much needed income, plus I need something to laugh at. I really like your channel Joe!!

      When I got my Evolution IX some 14 years ago, couldn't help noticing that old folks, commonly in a Toyota Avalon, couldn't hear the horn(s). The Evo came with two, not that it helped. It was a safety issue, so I installed one Mercedes truck horn under the front clip in a factory location, ~600Hz center frequency IIRC, replacing one of the stock units. It's not overly loud, but certainly gets your attention. Like I said, it's been about 14 years and I'm grateful for the horn almost every day. Sometimes the little things can make a big difference.

    Why we see this so many times . I am currently working on removing aftermarket crap from a Nissan . Wires spliced from the IPDM and BCM . Fried the ECM and now is the question , who is going to pay for the fix and more important , do I want to get involved . I got paid for my diagnoses but the two company´s that installed their crap both claim that they followed instruction manuals which are tested and approved by the manufacturer . These situations are a nightmare for a client because in cases like this I need to see money up front before I even continue .

  • @pepeshopping

    Modern cars are computers with motors, sensors and actuators, not your simple black and red wires anymore!
    Given that each generation becomes more software driven, I can see where, in the short future (5-10 years), only the dealer would be able to do, replace or repair anything that connects, or interacts with the main computer (ECM).
    Basically, everything but the wheels, brakes, tires and simple switches or lights.
    Yes, it’s all software, so there is always a way, but with encryption, blockchain and one time tokens, gets much harder to ‘copy’ or reverse engineer.

      If the BCM (or any of the computers) controls anything by switching the ground, it's probably using N-channel mosfets. N channel mosfets are easy to drive high current devices from a microcontroller, but they're only rated for so much current. If you put too much current through them (by using that controlled ground as a general ground for a high current thing), the mosfet will blow up, and then the computer can't provide ground anymore. Low side switching (switching the ground side of something) is cheaper, as it only takes one mosfet. High side switching (controlling the power side) takes 2 mosfets, so when possible most things are low side switched as it saves cost in the BCM (or ECM / PCM etc). Sure, mosfets are only a few cents, but why use 2 when you can use just one! The BCM could probably be repaired by putting new mosfets in it - only takes a few minutes if you have the right soldering equipment, and of course, if it's not potted.

    The blame here should not be on aftermarket parts but a single incompetent owner, or an “idiot” friend of his. I highly doubt this was done at a specialty shop. Look at that spiffy blue tubing, my belly tells me the owner bought that off of eYay and its all a self install. Most shops just carry black tubing not that stupid colored “look at my looms!” jazz. The factory horn is a straight shot circuit after +12v comes out of the factory relay. Swapping it out with another to change tone should cause no codes whatsoever unless your trying to wire something like a freight train horn that exceeds the amperage draw on the factory circuit. I would have to guess when the idiot added the gizmo horn either somehow backfed +12v down that BCM ground feed (I cant fathom why) or tied the gizmo horn ground into that. That add-on horn works like a tiny car amplifier and may have pulled high current through that ground feed circuit which its most likely not designed for, thus damaging it. For me this is such a mind blowing fail as this is such a simple 2 or 3 wire hook-up. Even though that toy horn is a cheap China POS, it still could have been installed with no interference to the vehicle itself. Once again, aftermarket parts and installers are not all to blame here for the incompetence of a single blithering idiot.
    I never knew about this restricted “gateway” thing until now, what a load of utter bs, surprised that does not infringe on right to repair.

    • @JoesAutoElectric
      @JoesAutoElectric  4 года назад

      Just to be clear it was a police horn installed, and yes, they hooked up the power feed from the relay to the sensor ground from the BCM. Big fail.

    I work at a parts store, so I get to see all kinds of stupid shit like this before it comes to you guys. I had a couple kids (under 25) with a 2016 Caddy that had decided to throw a couple of el cheapo "go fast" parts on like a "cold air" intake, a "chip" (resistor), and a canned tune. There was a CEL and it ran like GARBAGE! I knew what was going on based on the codes our shitty scanner gave me before looking at the car...
    "Did you put a custom intake on it? What about an IAT mod?"
    "... Uh... Well yeah!"
    I got visibly distraught.
    Their work involved wire nuts and hot glue.
    That is all.
