As amazing as Shadow of the Erdtree is, it has no business being nominated for GOTY, neither do remakes and much less remasters. Why isn't there a category for best dlc?
I loved Shadow of the Erdtree and so far it was easily the best content released this year that I played, but I would agree that DLC shouldn't be considered. Remakes are different if you ask me though. The FFVII games are perfect examples as they are technically remakes but are essentially completely different games that are just re-imagined experiences and fundamentally deserve to be in the running.
I don’t mind remakes for GotY. Capcom puts a lot of work into RE2 and RE4. SH2 is pretty good. They never win but they get nommed. Where I think some remakes should be excluded is Best Narrative, when it’s just copying the same narrative. So this year for instance, Silent Hill 2 really shouldn’t be nommed in Best Narrative. The story is from 2002, it’s everything else that’s new (which is why it should be eligible for GotY, Best Sound, etc). Bloober didn’t create this narrative. On the other hand, FF7 Rebirth has those new narrative beats. I don’t see it as a remake really, with what they’ve done. I think it is fine being nommed for Best Narrative.
The reason why they don't release who's voting for what game is because when critics make up 90% of the overall score, revealing who voted for what is basically giving away who'll win for each category, long before the show itself reveals it
Black Myth: Wukong might be nominated but's not going to win anything. They only did that just so they don't have a repeat of the Hogwarts Legacy debable.
It’s just weird that after Shadow of the Erd Tree was released, TGA now considers DLC for GOTY while last year Phantom Liberty came out and it wasn’t given the same treatment, it’s just weird that’s the case as I don’t think DLC should be included as part of the GOTY discussion due to the fact that you need another game to play the DLC, if it was released stand alone then maybe but Shadow of the Erd Tree needs base Elden Ring to even play, and you have to progress a ways in to the base game to play Shadow of the Erd Tree in the first place, honestly I think this decision was made to get ahead of some blow back for it not being included in GOTY

I remember when I had no idea what on earth Granblue Fantasy was. For context to what it is. It’s basically a web based gacha game that got fighting game spin offs in the form of versus and versus rising. I see as it as a win. Because it means the franchise is becoming more exposed. There is also a Relink an action JRPG side game to the main gacha game. Which was also a really good game. My personal GOTY. Figured I would reveal what on earth Granblue Fantasy is to anyone here who doesn’t know what it is.
Toriyama wrote both the original FF7 and the Remakes. While yes the story has the same major story beats almost everything is new. Easily some of the best character moments/interactions I've ever experienced in a game.
if i buy Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree and can play it immediately (without having to buy the base game) then sure, you can nominate that for GOTY. it just doesn't make any sense that a DLC being nominated as a game
WUWA IS NOMINATED , how amazing , i just finished camellya quest , i'm so satisfied with this game, the community is mature they are not damage driven yet so we're good , so far so good , i play on my way to work , sometimes during my lunch pause with some friends , since its mobile game i can quickly log in , and regardless out of all the gacha games i played this one is the most relaxing , i can skip days and still log in during some event and get tons of rewards ; so deserving , and other than that , the same games are nominated over the big categories , so that means each will get a chance of winning at least one category each
I am playing Balatro. It's so good that I bought it twice. PC and iOS and I have been playing it on iPad a lot. It's really addictive once you figure out how to build a deck. From the noms I'd give Balatro my vote for GOTY. My GOTY is HD2, though, followed by Stellar Blade and Core Keeper.
What happens if a company decides to just market their game as a remake as opposed to a remastered, because you know the terms are interchanged a lot in the industry.
Vote with your wallet remains true. They can push whatever they want, if you don't like the look of it, please don't buy it. Would be funny if the adverstising costs caused some of those companies to collapse, but I doubt it's often tied to it. Good and bad games can simply speak for themselves, and with easy highlight reels with stuff like shadowplay, anyone can create ads for good games simply by uploading some good footage.
There should be just a category for DLC of the year, same can be considered for remakes and remasters, if you want to add those. But they shouldn't competing for "game of the year" IMHO
10% weighting for player voting is ridiculous. If they were really afraid of botting, that's a problem with their voting system that they could deal with. The fact that they don't means they don't care about the accuracy of public votes anyway. It's just a marketing ploy and it would be less insulting if they just left it out entirely.
Unlike Hollywood, video games have enough original titles that they don't need to dive into the derivative pool to find enough games to fill a Best of roster.
Hottake probably but Shadow of the Erdtree shouldn't be classified for game of the year 1. It's DLC 2. Its a add on from 2 years ago it doesn't matter if the DLC 20hrs or 8hrs it's still not a new game and I had same problem with cyberpunk last year had nom that it shouldn't be
Shadow of the Erdtree should just not be the game of the year. I consider it to honestly be the DLC of the year and probably the best piece of video game content that released this year. It just isn't the game of the year.
Including DLC and even Remakes in a lot of these categories is ridiculous - Silent Hill 2 remake being nominated for Narrative was particularly egregious. Like… Geoff my brother in Christ regardless of any modern spins, that narrative was written and playable in 2001
Honestly, I wouldn't get too hung up over technicalities. The categories are intentionally vague to allow for these sorts of things. Every year, there is stuff that the panel played and wants to highlight so they find a way to do so. It happens with the Oscars all the time (What is a leading role and what is a supporting role? It doesn't really matter too much. The awards are just ways to recognize the performances that The Academy liked). SotE was my favorite piece of gaming media this year and I bet a lot of other people felt similarly. The only time I can think of where it felt off to me was Dave the Diver getting nominated for best indie game. The Game Awards are probably the only chance for indies to get this kind of publicity so it didn't feel right that a game backed by Nexon got to take a spot away from actual indie devs.
Shadow of The Erdtree is definitely one of the best releases this year, however it is not a standalone game and you still have to buy a 2 year old game to play it. It should not qualify for GOTY no matter how big it is or how much content it has or how good it is. I am actually surprised BMW got many nominations including GOTY so that was actually refreshing to see. Glad to see Metaphor get so many nominations. Veilguard only getting a nomination for accessibility was hilarious xD
If that was the COD would win every year beaches it has the bigger play count. We don't want it to be a popularity contest, it would make it a sht show.
Their reasoning is arbitrary nonsense. They should just go ahead and make a separate category for Best Expansion. Also imo Metaphor is my GOTY. I think it's one of the best JRPGs of the last few years, and is a great refinement and sharpening of the Atlus formula that strips away a lot of Persona's bloat and bad pacing. Rebirth is my runner-up along with Wukong
Honestly, I'm shocked they even acknowledged Wukong. Then again, they likely only did that just so they don't have a repeat of the Hogwarts Legacy debacle.
Here's my take on the matter. 1) DLC, Remakes and Remaster should be excluded in GOTY and have their own award. 2) The game awards is all about honoring games. First as others have mentioned. Shadow of the Erdtree is a DLC and cannot be played by itself and requires you to play the defeat certain bosses to start it. Second it is a DLC that has been recognize by this award by winning the same category and should be immediately disqualify. Let other games be recognize.
As everybody else I agree on nominating a dlc/expansion for a goty is just silly. Same with remakes, they both should have their own category. And I wonder why Selaco did not get nominated for any indie-title (Altered Orbit Studios)! What they have done with the GZ Doom-engine is nothing but magic and the game is fantastic (even if its just the first part). But I am mostly curious to see if there is an actual AWARD-ceremony. You know where the creates get to hold a speec has long as they like and examples of the nominations are being shown & not just listed. Last year it was like the awards themself was stressed away as fast as possible to make room for some trailers/hollywood-start
While I don't think it WILL win, Shadow of the Erdtree is essentially just the sequel to Elden Ring. I think its the one time id be ok with a dlc winning game of the year.
They should just make a best expansion list and/or best DLC list. Would make much more sense and would actually be a very interesting list to engage with. If that was a list back then I would’ve loved to debate Shadow Broker vs Undead Nightmare for nominations/ winners.
I don't think DLC, remakes or remasters should be included. Its like someone singing a cover song and winning awards for it. Wait that probably happens.
DLC, remakes and remasters should have their own category, all 3 benefit massively from whatever love the original game had, ofc shadow of the erdtree IS a special case cause even if it was a standalone game its certainly good enough to warrant a nomination, but you cant deny that its support IS bolstered by it being mf ELDEN RING, universally regarded as one of the best games ever to be released
I think DLC possibly winning GOTY is great for holding developers accountable. The only reason Shadow of the Erdtree is nominated is because generally speaking this year was pathetic. Black Myth Wukong should clearly win GOTY.
what do you mean with highest rated? for me the higuest rated would be black mith wukong since it has almost 1 million positive reviews on steam, what rating are you refering?
@@kennystamper7873 and how many people rate games on metacritic compared to steam and I am not saying that astro bot is better or worst than black myth, I am poor so I cannot play bot of them but when a game like black mith that came out out of nothing to the point a lot of people me included though it was probably a fake game manage to become so big so fast I am inclined to think they did something really special

It was NOMINATED. It's not going to win lol. Even so, it has more worthwhile content that 99% of full games that get released. Let's go SotE!!!
No Rise of the Ronin nomination in the action game category is a travesty. It has the best combat of any action game this last year, hands down. Anyone who thinks Rise of the Ronin's combat isn't great almost definitely just isn't very good at it, and doesn't understand using stance dancing and weapon swapping to animation cancel, allowing execution of flashy combos. Or using shrunkens to keep enemy stamina from regenerating, while using the accompanying dodge to reposition without using stamina. Mark my words: one day, Team Ninja will get their due.
Exclusivity and just being ignored by the press for Dragon's Dogma 2 hurt it a lot. But yeah, it deserved a nod. I did like it more more than Dragon's Dogma 2, I actually regret buying that day 1 and wished I bought Ronin.
@chuckles471 I did the exact same thing, since I was such a fan of Dark Arisen. I tried my best to like DD2, but I left it feeling disappointed. And I do wish there wasn't the exclusivity with Rise of the Ronin, that definitely hurt the game's ability to get wider audience appeal.

Ima be real. If it was a full popular vote, it wouldn’t be that reflective of quality, it’d be reflective of popularity. I think the 90% juror isn’t good for a number of reasons, but a popular vote isn’t a very good idea either.
2:10 this is already too complicated 😂 but its like most modern games with the standard, premium, ultra, season pass nonesense. For that reason I'm out.

If we were to open the GOTY for remakes, then I don't understand why I don't see Persona 3 Reload in any category :(
I remember when I had no idea what on earth Granblue Fantasy was.
Making a Best DLC Category: ❌
Nominating DLC for GOTY for a game that already won GOTY: ✅
I was expecting the nominees for goty are
1. Concord
2. Unknown 9: awakening
Its just weird seeing a dlc in that slot
Dragon Age not getting nominated in the "Best Family Game" is the biggest missed opportunity ever.
What happens if a company decides to just market their game as a remake as opposed to a remastered, because you know the terms are interchanged a lot in the industry.
Imma tell you which WONT be game of the year, Starfield 😂
DLCs being eligible opens the door where a 5 hr DLC could be eligible.
Black myth wukong is my game of the year easy! They need a DLC category!! Just like they need a remake category also .
They should add "Disaster/Disappointment of the Year"
Pleasantly surprised that Veilguard was not nominated for GOTY or best RPG.
Hand-picking a bunch of corporate media outlets to choose which corporate product gets the biggest advertisement of the year
Otherwise cod would win every category
Vote with your wallet remains true. They can push whatever they want, if you don't like the look of it, please don't buy it.
Would be funny if the adverstising costs caused some of those companies to collapse, but I doubt it's often tied to it. Good and bad games can simply speak for themselves, and with easy highlight reels with stuff like shadowplay, anyone can create ads for good games simply by uploading some good footage.
A DLC is a downloadable content and not a stand-alone game, so no matter how good it is, it shouldn't get nominated .
10%.
Gamers do not matter.
Man they love Senua's Saga.
That’s cinematic bias for ya. Some categories are warranted tho. I do think Melina Juergens deserves her nomination.
Do you want cod to win every category?
@@ApsmneShsbshu a fish? no
@@regalgiant1597 so it shouldn’t be the popular vote
There should be just a category for DLC of the year, same can be considered for remakes and remasters, if you want to add those. But they shouldn't competing for "game of the year" IMHO
10% weighting for player voting is ridiculous. If they were really afraid of botting, that's a problem with their voting system that they could deal with. The fact that they don't means they don't care about the accuracy of public votes anyway. It's just a marketing ploy and it would be less insulting if they just left it out entirely.
I haven't heard of Balatro until the nominations. It being up for GOTY instead of Stellar Blade is insane.
10 percent is NOT ENOUGH. If everyone that votes, vote in exact opposition to the official judges the judges would still win.
Watching people's reaction to Usada Pekora showing up has been entertaining.
Unlike Hollywood, video games have enough original titles that they don't need to dive into the derivative pool to find enough games to fill a Best of roster.
Hottake probably but Shadow of the Erdtree shouldn't be classified for game of the year 1. It's DLC 2. Its a add on from 2 years ago it doesn't matter if the DLC 20hrs or 8hrs it's still not a new game and I had same problem with cyberpunk last year had nom that it shouldn't be
coldest take of the day 😭
You can’t even enter the DLC area without playing a lot of Elden ring. It is NOT a game.
Shadow of the Erdtree should just not be the game of the year. I consider it to honestly be the DLC of the year and probably the best piece of video game content that released this year. It just isn't the game of the year.
Wait a minute. How is Dragon Age the Vielgaurd didnt get GOTY nominee when it has such high ratings from those same outlets? Hmmm😂
A card game I’ve never heard of, a dlc, a remake, and a gimmick PlayStation game. What an awful year for gaming.
Including DLC and even Remakes in a lot of these categories is ridiculous - Silent Hill 2 remake being nominated for Narrative was particularly egregious. Like… Geoff my brother in Christ regardless of any modern spins, that narrative was written and playable in 2001
Tetris DLC being nominated next year
Honestly, I wouldn't get too hung up over technicalities.
These are not your (10%) games, these are OUR (90%) games
If that was the COD would win every year beaches it has the bigger play count. We don't want it to be a popularity contest, it would make it a sht show.
@@jcflores1774+ Spider-Man would have crept way closer to baldurs gate.
I think they included the expansion to generate controversy as promotion for the event. They obviously know people gonna talk about it
“We only have 2 goty games this year and we don’t want them winning so let’s add all dlc, season pass, and remasters so it muddys the water!”
Why not just make a “best dlc” category? An odd choice for sure.
Silent hill 2 is in dam near every award category yet doesnt get nominated for GOTY? Lets just give that spot to a DLC SMH
TF is Belatro? I've never heard of it till today, and it is a Game Of The Year contender 😂
It's excellent lol
I got a huge whiplash there for a second. It's spelled Balatro but you said Belatro and "Belat" on my native language is the female sex organ lol.
It is easily one of the best games of the year. I recommend the mobile version, it's incredibly addictive
at this point, I think I might actually want the DLC to win GOTY just to see how much chaos it's going to bring
This is their way of obfuscating censorship of certain titles that don't align with the political and financial interests of 'the Industry'..
Stellar Blade or Silent Hill 2 should've been nominated over the Elden Ring DLC.
While I don't think it WILL win, Shadow of the Erdtree is essentially just the sequel to Elden Ring. I think its the one time id be ok with a dlc winning game of the year.
Peko sweep !!
They should just make a best expansion list and/or best DLC list. Would make much more sense and would actually be a very interesting list to engage with. If that was a list back then I would’ve loved to debate Shadow Broker vs Undead Nightmare for nominations/ winners.
Been a massive Fromsoft fanboy for over a decade, and loved Erdtree. But I agree that it feels weird having it in GOTY.
I don't think DLC, remakes or remasters should be included. Its like someone singing a cover song and winning awards for it. Wait that probably happens.
The fun part about the remake story argument is that it is really good, but rebirth was done by many of the same people
DLC, remakes and remasters should have their own category, all 3 benefit massively from whatever love the original game had, ofc shadow of the erdtree IS a special case cause even if it was a standalone game its certainly good enough to warrant a nomination, but you cant deny that its support IS bolstered by it being mf ELDEN RING, universally regarded as one of the best games ever to be released
If they choose DLC over this year games it is unfair. DLCs should have their own category for them.
I think DLC possibly winning GOTY is great for holding developers accountable. The only reason Shadow of the Erdtree is nominated is because generally speaking this year was pathetic.
Black Myth Wukong should clearly win GOTY.
Astro Bot it's the highest rated game of the year
@@ASTROGOTY24 Astro Bot is a game I'd be super happy to see win, even if I haven't played it, just so platformers get some love.
what do you mean with highest rated? for me the higuest rated would be black mith wukong since it has almost 1 million positive reviews on steam, what rating are you refering?
It's the top rated game of the year on metacrtic
@@kennystamper7873 and how many people rate games on metacritic compared to steam and I am not saying that astro bot is better or worst than black myth, I am poor so I cannot play bot of them but when a game like black mith that came out out of nothing to the point a lot of people me included though it was probably a fake game manage to become so big so fast I am inclined to think they did something really special
@@BARDI77 meaning consistent reviews remaining higher than average of wukong
I just love how everybody pretends not to care about the Game Awards and say it doesn't matter, and yet something like SotE getting a GotY nomination turns everyone into frothing angry maniacs.
It was NOMINATED. It's not going to win lol. Even so, it has more worthwhile content that 99% of full games that get released. Let's go SotE!!!
I love DLC and remaster/remake, but they shouldn’t be nominated. We need new games and new innovation in the gaming industry
11:35 I would give best performance to Todd Howard. He really did outdo himself this year acting like Shattered Space was any good.
No Black Myth Wukong for Action Adventure, but they have Star Wars Outlaws? WHAT?
Wukong 8/10 game has bunch of noms while Veilguard 9/10 get 1 non-essential nom.
It’s funny people think that the normal person vote matters. There’s a reason it’s only 10 percent. It should be a strictly normal person vote. A 50/50 at least. Game “journalism” has lost so much credibility.
gamers aren't any better 😭
incoming Stellar Blade GOTY because of Eve's dump truck and coomer bait outfits.
You can see the panelists and they aren't that bad tbf
@@D4C_LoveTrain1 yes because IGNorant, Kotaku, and Game Rant arnt that bad
Ima be real. If it was a full popular vote, it wouldn’t be that reflective of quality, it’d be reflective of popularity. I think the 90% juror isn’t good for a number of reasons, but a popular vote isn’t a very good idea either.
2:10 this is already too complicated 😂 but its like most modern games with the standard, premium, ultra, season pass nonesense. For that reason I'm out.
FF rebirth for the win
100%😊
I agree
Shadow of the Erdtree was more polished and gives more enjoyment than most full priced games, should they name it Elden Ring Origins because of technicalities?
As the FS Games fan, SOTE should not been nominated for GOTY cause, we need the base game for the DLC(defeating mohg and radahn), you cannot access it instantly as you load(not if you already had a save file that you had already defeated them). But if it wins, it just shows how Game Awards is a JOKE. The jornalists just pushed away WH40K: SPACEMARINE 2💀.
