I'm Canadian and don't do shots of maple syrup. We do shots of alcohol just like everyone else I'm assuming? Unless I'm a strange Canadian that doesn't do shots of maple syrup?

It's not a common thing or a thing at all...
We all steal a taste now and then, using a spoon mainly; since they wanted to highlight the syrup as a Canadian product, for the gig, this is how they presented-it. Cooler, simpler and less messy than serving pancakes or something...
That said, samplers or maple syrup testers, might use a type of shot glass for taste tests. It's probably made of plastic, now a days...I doubt it's much of a thing, though, lol.

Because in cape cod, they made them on the front of homes, so wives could watch for their fisherman/sailor husbands to come home. And many times they didn't .so these women paced it endlessly waiting for their loved ones who would never return.
