Thanks for the complements! I got it from MJM Autohaus. I can't remember what I paid, but it was an awesome price. They're showing for $414.95 on there at this time. Installation was free 'cause I did it myself as well. It was a cinch. The old pipping came right off (after sawing one place where needed).
Thanks! It's been about a year now, and the only change there might be would include a slight drop in tone. So it may be a bit deeper now. Still absolutely no drone when cruising. Whenever you pick it up, you'll be glad you did.
I'm grateful for this video. I haven't heard a TT exhaust in years. Just got a VR GLI and went right for TT but after doing research it had me thinking because everyone knocked it. After this video. I'm in love all over again. Exhaust is sitting at the shop waiting to be installed tomorrow. Thanks again bro.
Thank you, thank you. I'm hands-down recommending the Borla system from Techtonics Tuning. I bought mine from MJM Autohaus, and got it in just a couple days. Installation was truly very easy (hardest part was cutting the old piping into two pieces for removal over the axle). They Also make Flowmaster systems, but the Borla was my preference.
I really like the way your car sounds, I checked your vid out cause I was looking into this system for my VR6. I like how it's not insanely loud and it has a great deep tone. Plus you can't beat the price for this system. Take care
Thanks! I have about 10,000 miles on it so far without any issues. If anything, it's gotten a touch louder and deeper. Still absolutely zero drone at highway speed.
Absolutely right. I grew up in Willits, and I hate it. :) It's been a couple years, and I still love the exhaust. Still sounds awesome, and I've had absolutely no issues.
Inlet side is 2.5". If I remember correctly (it's been awhile), it was part number 254.385 from Techtonics Tuning. They're nice guys with quality parts.
I ordered mine off of MJM Autohaus and the shipping was free. I also did my own installation, so that too was free. I don't know what a shop may charge to install it. On my car I had to saw through a pipe so I could get it over the axel and removed, and that was the hardest part. The rest was a cinch as it all just lined up perfectly.
Sry for the wait. I swear I leave replies but often they don't seem to actually post. Stock resonator is still present. Thanks for the compliment! Hopefully your kit works out well too!
Very nice. I'm at about 92k now, and I've replaced a total of 7 coilpacks so far, and there have been numerous other issues. I still love my car though. BTW, it'll cruise at 140MPH (where the speed limiter is), and it still has a little more power.
From the factory yeah ... have a look at the Jetta TDI cup. That little motor has LOTS of potential and that goes for the entire TDI lineup not just the 1.9L
I concur with the sound. The VR6 is very unique, and in my own opinion, the second-best sounding engine I've heard (first place being a Corvette with a Borla exhaust lol). But the 1.8T/2.0T is way cheaper to mod, and the mods provide more power (especially a chip). But if we wanted stupid-fast cars in the first place, we wouldn't have bought something as heavy as most any VW. =)
Bolted right on. The hardest part was just cutting through the stock pipe to remove it over the axel, and even that wasn't too bad. I do believe there is a single resonator in there. I'm told the engine sounds really buzzy without one.
I would think the 12v might be a little quieter, however I would also think that would be offset by your intake. Installation took just over an hour, without many surprises. Some bolts took a wrench and a mallet to break free, but besides that, it was really straightforward. As far as performance, on paper I've read it's about a 10hp, 10ft/lb gain for the 12v (not sure about 24v). I haven't decided just yet if I really notice it, or if it's in my head.
Thanks. I bet that Charger sounds beastly too. I have a '66 Chevelle that... checking... I never got around to uploading a video of. Sounds pretty mean too.
You don't even need the whole bumper. The cutout is part of a detachable piece called the rear valance. If you're looking for a single opening, I'd suggest the '04-'05 GLI rear valance, as it looks really good and goes with other "GLI" pieces. If you want the dual opening like mine has, look for a 24v valance from the '02-'04 Jetta VR6 cars, or the 4-Motion rear valance. I don't know why I never got around to posting a completed picture of my setup on here, but I ended with twin chrome tips.
The cuttout was on the 2002.5 - 2005 Jetta and GLIs with either the 1.8T or 24v VR6. The 2.0, and 1.9TDI had turndown exhaust and no cutout. If you'd like the cutout, you should be able to pick one up off a wrecked car that fits the criteria above. It's just the bottom black plastic part. Shouldn't be too expensive or ridiculous to install.
This is the SS set. I ordered the Al, but was shipped SS instead. I am not complaining. lol I'm not 100% on this, but to my knowledge the Al is lighter and cheaper, whereas the SS is heavier, more expensive, but it lasts longer (more resistant to salt on the road, etc).
This exhaust was somewhere around $400. Installation was free as I did it myself. I've since added a CAI and nice tips... like I said a few days ago, I should make an updated movie to see if these things would make a noticeable difference.
Dude, That's Willits California! I recognize the archway sign. That same sign used to sit in Reno Nevada. It used to say "Biggest Little City In The World". I used to drive that road about once a month. Anyway, nice ride with a nice sound. I too have an 03 Jetta GLI VR6. I'm making the same mods. Starting with a TT 260 Cam and building out from there. Let me know how you are liking the TT Exhaust.
@DemonOfRazgriz89 Yeah, this is the cat-back. No welding required, it bolts right on. I didn't have much trouble on my own, it was more simple than you'd expect and everything lined up *perfectly.* The hardest part was sawing off the stock pipe to be able to remove it. I think the installation instructions are available for download from TT's website if you'd like your friend to look it over.
At this time, I had the stock airbox installed. I've since installed an AEM CAI, and the exhaust note is noticeably louder, but it still doesn't drone when cruising.
@Ivegotbmxfriends Thanks. From what I'd read, 3" would cause too much loss in backpressure and cause a degradation of power. Besides, the sound of the 2.5" just fits soooo well.
The resonator is still in there. I thought about taking it out myself, however, I like it the way it is now. Just cruising in 6th down a freeway, it's silent in the cabin, but if you downshift or punch it, it roars. I reaaaaaally didn't want any loud drone on long trips, you know?
The exhaust by itself made a slight increase for sure. More recently I put an AEM Cold-air intake in there, and I think the two work together, because there's defiantly a noticeable increase in power when I added the "cone on a tube." The VR6 doesn't breathe very freely, so every little bit helps the other bits alot.
@MaxAndCoop123 I did pop off the chrome "GLI" and replaced with red. I eventually took off the "Jetta" badge too and slowly incorporated some later-model GLI trim pieces after this video was shot.
have 210 000 km (130 500 us miles) on mine and no engine trouble, only a busted 02 sensor (the first one) and other not so big issues (loose rear bushing, power windows (still working great even without the ability to adjust the opening when I lightly push the button down)
Thank you, and the two comments below as well. I do appreciate the input. I don't think I ever mentioned I cut that bland pipe right after I took this video and installed a chromed straight dual-outlet tip on it. So really, it's a touch louder and deeper than what you see here. Again, thanks for the comments!
@DemonOfRazgriz89 Good choice! lol This is "as is" I guess. I didn't mess around with the resonator. Believe it or not the installation was a cinch, minus having to hacksaw the original piping to be able to remove it from around the rear axle. I'd tell the shop to leave the resonator in: it doesn't drone when cruising, and it's tastefully boisterous when getting on it. I'd hate to have a little more volume without a resonator, and risk having it sound ricey and drone in the cabin.
I bought the GLI badges from the dealer, because I'm lazy. haha The grill badge is just an insert, and it snaps into the grill. Easy as pie. You seriously just slide it in the front where you want it, and the clips just grab the grill on the back.
No resonators were removed during the install. The kit was kept intact. Right after I took this video I cut the bland piping coming out the back off and added twin chromed tips (like stock, but a bit bigger), and that made it a tiny bit louder a well.
Sounds real good, I have a 02 glx. Looking to go with the tt system. Questioned how it would sound. listening to yours, I know it would sound nice, although a little different, because I have 12v instead of 24v, but I also have an intake. How long to install? Did you see some performance improvement?
@ChicoGLI haha nice. ok il prob leave the res alone then, i dont want drone and would hate to rice it out xD. i just want that sexy deep growl :). this is just the cat-back system right? that alone is what most people get i know, esp cuz it gets to expensive to get the full setup lol. as far as installation goes, my friend who might be willing to install it for me had one question; does it require welding or is it just bolt-ons? he can weld but he really doesnt want to lol thanks in advance
That sounds beautiful! Did you keep the stock resonator or eliminate it? Was there an aftermarket resonator with the kit? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I just want to know what I need to order because I just decided what system I'm going with!! :D
the 1999-2005 Volkswagen Jetta-Bora was assembled in Bratislava, Slovakia Changchun,China Poznan, Poland Puebla, Mexico Solomonovo, Ukraine Uitenhage, South Africa Wolfsburg, Germany
@zacharyhocutthsm The GLI was awesome on gas for a 2.8L VR6. Freeway trips would net just under 30MPG. The 6-speed really helps. Have the coilpacks replaced if they need the technical service bulletin specs (ask your dealer).
for the magnaflow I can't say you're wrong its why I may take the techtonics with the remus votex exhaust (if I find one) in place of a full magnaflow (it may not be like the R32 in sound but I'll get something that's OEM fit)
thx its a big help very appreciated but by curiosity do you still have the part number of the insert (when I went to the dealer they said I had to buy ANOTHER grille with the GLI insert and make it paint (by them of course) its why I was worried and wondered a bit about that)
@enjoithisone Was never sure. Rated at 200 stock, after intake and exhaust it certainly felt more snappy. I'm not about to say something stupid like "well the intake is like +340hp, and the exhaust adds 3^20hp" ya know? The engine had about 200ft/lbs torque stock as well.
@FDNY101202 It was holding up fantastically. I *am* in northern California, so perhaps the elements aren't too bad. I sold it a few months ago, and checked it then - was like new.
@TheSaltySea lol yep, definitely a lucky bastard. Never hurts to ask for a tip. I picked up part number "254 290" for my tip. Looks great, and if you have the wide bumper cutout, it fits perfectly. It looks like it's meant to be there from the factory, but looks too good haha
do you still have the resonator on this setup? I may go with a magnaflow unresonated and I wondered if I'll get the same R32'ish exhaust note as you have on this setup
did you remove the resonator or is that just the exhaust "as is"? I just bought an '01 GTI 12V VR6 and ordered the same kit from MJM Autohaus as well. I dont have the capability (or the knowhow lol) to install it myself. when I take it to a shop, do u think i should tell them to remove the resonator?
oh and where did you sourced out this GLI grille and rear badges, did you bought them from the dealer (and if so for the grille, is it a complete grille or just an insert for the stocker unit)
ya think this setup is quite an interesting choice: think I'll get something like that with a remus muffler. otherwise I'm considering a complete magnaflow

Nicely done. I've had mine for about three years now, and she definitely still has my interest.

Just love 2003-2005 GLIs and GTIs, that VR6 with a turbo and you get instant nirvana, as simple as just add water recipes lol
the thing I liked about the magnaflow was the tips were looking good and I had good feedbacks about them with my friends that had one on their jetta
i have the same exact car with the same muffler and pipes, plus a GHL cold air intake, i love it
Sry for the wait. I swear I leave replies but often they don't seem to actually post. Stock resonator is still present. Thanks for the compliment! Hopefully your kit works out well too!

your car sound really sweet due.....and the remus its preety loud but my god im never going to have enough of vr6 sound xD

@Slobodan488 The '04-'05 GLI 1.8T came with the BBS rims you're referring to. The '02.5 - '03 had these wheels (stolen from the GTI lineup anyway).
wow inside vids of this great whip would be nice!
@ChicoGLI That's fine, I won't be installing til Spring anyhow (toooooooo cold here in MN!!) Thanks for the response!!
Simply Beautiful
I haven't benchmarked any before or after readouts, but there was a noticeable difference in pull in the midrange.

This was created using iMovie HD 6 on a MacBook Pro. The blip captions that pop up are part of RUclips itself though.
The 2.0 has a similar system, but it's 2.25" whereas this one is 2.5" That 2.0 engine can sound pretty mean with the right setup.
Sorry you feel that way. I spent my money on education. Also, I choose to act/live my life with a little class. Thanks for the comment though.
@ChicoGLI winner!
That sounds amazing. I was told to get this for my TDI. I dunno how it will sound tho.
sup dude nice car...i love gli's...theyre so fast...how much did the system cost you? and where did u get it> thnx
Good video. Where did u buy yours at? I'm lookin for a nice sound and not that annoying rice burner noise. Well great video bro
did you remove the resonator or is that just the exhaust "as is"? I just bought an '01 GTI 12V VR6 and ordered the same kit from MJM Autohaus as well. I dont have the capability (or the knowhow lol) to install it myself. when I take it to a shop, do u think i should tell them to remove the resonator?
thats a swweet sound, definately NOT ricey. good job.
oh and where did you sourced out this GLI grille and rear badges, did you bought them from the dealer (and if so for the grille, is it a complete grille or just an insert for the stocker unit)
I love my 2.8.. It can move and it's stock..lookin for intake. Exhaust, headers n a chip.. Then I'm good for awhile.
Do you have the stock airbox or an air filter cause I had a K&N filter and even on the stocker exhaust it was quite louder than with the airbox
Thanks!
How long has yours been installed? Mine's been on for about a year now, and I think it's gotten a bit louder. I should make a followup movie sometime.
ya think this setup is quite an interesting choice: think I'll get something like that with a remus muffler. otherwise I'm considering a complete magnaflow
what kind of chrome tips did you end up getting?? what was the inlet size?
I'm sure there are plenty of places in your area that will install this exhaust for ya. I don't know what area you're in, but just keep an eye out of muffler shops of just a general garage. I'm sure any little place could install it in a snap.
Were the '03 GLI's equipped with the 24v VR6 or the 12v?
i have an 01 Jetta Wolfsburg and looking to install a borla exhaust what do you recommend i go with?? thanks
first, Hey man can you tell me where to get this exuast+ muffler?
second, did you do any welding?
is that the Aluminized or Stainless Steel set? and what is the difference?
wow..
nice.
this is whit both resonator ?? i have the same setup but mine is a litter bit quiet. , if not what resonator u pullet out , the first 1 close to the catalytic or the 1 close to the borla moffler . thx!!
What makes the exhast do that sound after he lefts go the accelerator, is it the resonator?
I ordered aluminum... but I believe I got stainless by mistake or something. It sure ticks as it cools down like stainless does.
how is the aluminized version holding up?
How much did the exhaust run you?
where did u get this setup from and what is the price range
cameras dont capture how loud this really is. i have this exhaust on my GLI too and everyone wants to race haha. the only problem is that it looks like shit, but TT also sells tips that look stock. btw sounds even better after a couple thousand miles
Nice choice! hahaha
@Mario4Italy no your dreamin, vr6 mk2 all day.
