- Over the years I have read on many forums "Can anyone show me how to build a low power guitar amp using 6SN7 tubes?" Usually the responses are vague and inaccurate. So, I decided to take on the challenge, keep the cost low, make it utilizing common output and power transformers. I believe this is it! This design is solid, sounds sweet, great for recording. Yes, I'm sure there are things that could improved on, however the basic concept works. Think of the thousands of 6SN7 tubes available for cheap vrs the cost of a popular 6V6. I see that there is a need for experimental one off designs. D-Lab electronics accepts the challenge and will continue to produce results!

I wish I still had the tubes I used to have when I was a teenager (1970's). My brother and I got almost all our parts by stripping old junked TV's. I remember being disappointed often when I pulled a tube from a chassis and saw that yes, it was one more 6SN7! At least I saved a few power transformers.

Awesome, I love it. I guess it will be #3 for me after my current project. It sounds like it has great tone and I have a couple old black cable boxes with mesh sides and tops that would look fantastic with the hardware hanging out of the top.

I guess I would like to know where you are getting 6sn7s for 50 cents a piece. I use them in my audio amp builds and the best source I have is $12.00 NOS. If you look on ebay, the prices for new tubes are in the $25-$55 range. Amazon: the cheapest I found was EH at $36
Agreed. 6SN7s from Tubesandmore are $18....... Maybe from Hamfests?

Ive got tons of free tv tubes...would be dope to utilize something of that nature for a guitar amp.

That thing could be modified quite easily to be a nice standalone spring reverb unit as well. Only a spring reverb tank and an extra double triode added as reverb recovery circuit + some extra wiring.

6AQ5 and 6K6 tubes are another cheap way to go.
I actually built an amp with 6AV6’s and 6AQ5’s with a huge stash of NOS 7 pin sockets I found at a surplus store. The 20 tubes I bought cost more to ship(only used 8). That thing screamed!

Personally I would put a cathode bypass cap across the 1.5K resistor of that second 6AV6 tube to get a little more gain after the tone stack. Get a more guitar friendly sound. I do like the idea of running power tubes in parallel and class A. If I recall, Allesandro made 20 watt tube amps using four 6V6 power tubes in parallel for a similar effect.

Do you think it would be easy to build an acoustic oriented tube amp? Something that can carry the higher frequencies and also drive a tweeter? Think Rivera Sedona type amp... I wouldn't know what the parts or circuit requirements would be, I'm just curious. Thanks for your time!

I am not a technician but I love this video of using 6sn7 output tubes. 3 in parallel per channel. I don't even play any musical instrument. Can I use this to play my line output level equipment like a CD player or any equipment like a tuner? Thank you and best of luck to you.

Back before the introduction of the miniature 7 and 9 pin tubes, The 6SN7 was a very common dual triode. Commonly used as audio preamp or oscillator tubes. It was basically the predecessor to the 12A*7 series.
The 6SN7 is a pair of 6J5 tubes in one envelope.
Why didn't you use 6SN7s for the preamp stage, as well. A six tube amp with ALL 6SN7s.

I did this with 2x ecc81 for 4 triodes in paralell SE, it worked well with a primary around 5k-6.4k.
Yea that's the problem the output trannie, most triodes want like 17k or more this is a good idea to put them in parallel to reduce primary impedance needs. Makes me want to do some experimental tubing.
Hmm interesting, I wonder what the spectral trace would be, with parallel link up like that, one would think you might get all sort of odd things.
Have you ever heard of a Masco PA amp MA-12EX? I have one that we attempted to modify into a low watt guitar amp but we never really solved the issue. Was wondering if maybe changing out all the guts and converting it into a Princeton style guitar amp might be doable.

T, what if you build a re-amp box and just played back some DI guitar tracks into the amps? That way you wouldn’t be beholden to having Tony over or trying to nail that G chord. Just a thought! I’m sure many viewers would happily provide DI tracks :)
hello like your work im new and just want 2 ask u on marshall jcm 800 100w 2203 1985 with no bias point and on pin 5 gives me 444v. if i put on the 1-8pin the resistor that you put on the one video where you put that resistor, can i get the bias for el34 that i just swapt. im one of does that i try doing it my self. thanks for your help

Cool little amp! How many watts does it have? Do you have a parts list, and could you configure it with a tremolo circuit?
This is a 3 watt model. Yes, Tremolo could be added, but at this point, I have wrapped up this project

When you send a test signal using a test tone generator (whether I'm trouble shooting an amp or a guitar pedal that have hi-z inputs) do I need to add a resistor or transformer or something in line with the test signal test lead before it hits the device's input, or doesn't that really matter?
Nope, just use a signal generator that has an output attenuator. You only want to output 150-200mv
Hi, I want to build a 5F1 amp, and shopping at the swap meet, I found a chasis with a transformer and two 5Y3 tubes. I only need one of the tubes for that amp. Do you think the transformer is the right one? I’m just learning about tube amps. Thanks!
The Masco is likely from the 50's or early 60's.

Can this also be done with the 6gc7? I saw a video where a guy built a 6gc7 6v6 amp but no data.
Where are you getting 6sn7 for 50 cents? I have seen them range $8 to $150

So there needs to be a section of the Rock Hall of Fame that celebrates the engineers and techs that provided the amps, and kept them working that, the famous guitar players used to get their Hall of Fame sound...

Cool little amp but seems like a waste of sockets and 6sn7’s especially when I get new Russian 6p3s’s (6L6GB) for $25 a quad. 1 socket + 1 6p3s would be cheaper than 3 sockets + 3 6sn7s. But I do like that cranked triode sound Tony is getting. Also for R&R guitar amps,… I think some sort of PRE & POST volume knobs are a must have.
