  • DRAW WHAT YOU SEE - A Realistic Drawing Technique
I frequently get asked about the technique I have when it comes to drawing so I have created this video to try and offer some insight into the process. Its as simple as drawing what you see, but its taken a lot of time and practice. I hope you can take something away from this short side video.

In my art class, we were doing a Chuck Close inspired piece, where we had to draw ourselves. My art teacher always said to our class to "Draw what you see and not what you know."

Glurp Bot So just directly copy what you see without putting any imagination or thought? Um, that's bad advice. 😂

    • @PrisonPocket
      @PrisonPocket 6 лет назад +68

Arii. It means to really just draw what you see and not what you know the object to be. If your trying to draw an apple and you focus on the fact that it's an apple your not going to get accurate lines and proportion. The tip is more of a realism drawing thing. But I agree with you if you are trying to add the elements of creativity that aren't on normal apples.

@@nine-vi7rw No, that actually is perfect advice. If you draw what you think you see, then you won't get it perfectly accurate.

Kinda trippy how we both use the same style and method, always thought it was best to start from a point and go from there. Can totally relate to how sometimes eye and hand coordination is very important n if one thing is slightly off it drastically changes the picture.

I write this after I have been watching you for a while now, and this is surely the third or forth time I view this, and I am convinced it is the best approach. I tried some grid drawings and they make me get too separated from the texture and lines of the larger drawing. I dislike erasing guide lines too. I find I draw everything in a first pass using the mechanical pencil and then if there are values needing darkening, I use some larger Faber-Castell pencils 6B or so...to darken. Thank you Dan, your encouragement to draw more and more hits home with me and I’m increasing from a few hour a day to drawing constantly unless I’m painting. Keep on keeping on! STAY GREAT YOUNG MAN!

I used to draw lots as a kid, and started to get pretty 'average' at it once I reached my mid teens. This idea was always the biggest struggle, drawing what you see. I'm 'very slowly' getting back into basic drawing, just characters at the moment, but this idea still mystifies me. Thanks for discussing.

It's beautiful work, and I love your technique. largely because it's very, very close to the way I draw. Where I differ is that I sketch the outline of a small area, fill that area in, then sketch the outline of the next small area, and fill that in. I do this until the drawing is finished.
I also decide what grade or grades of pencil I'll need in that area. No matter how much pressure you use with a 2B, it will never be as dark as a 6B pencil used with the same pressure. And no matter how much pressure you use with a 6B, it will never be as black as an 8B under the same pressure. To get as much contrast as possible, the common way is to then switch off to a matt pencil, a carbon pencil, or a black Polychromos colored pencil. Or even a to a pastel pencil when only a very small area needs to be a deep, solid black with as little shine as you can get.
It's certainly possible to create great drawings with only one pencil, one grade, and you prove that. But more grades mean more contrast with less pressure, and contrast is what graphite is all about.

Wow! I have always loved art and drawing, but I've only started to get serious about it. I draw mainly portraits, and the things I struggle with is getting the correct values, and proportions. I'm fairly young, though I don't want to reveal my age. Not on RUclips, anyways. I feel that if I can get the proportions right, I can upgrade my drawings a lot. I always get so sad that I can't draw well, but then I see you and hear your advice and you inspire me again. I don't know how or why, but it helps me keep going. Right now, my drawings are far from mediocre, but I hope to get better. Thank you very much for helping to keep me inspired!

This video has really helped me to understand. Now first of all I've understood the "draw what you see" for awhile now but drawing the texture has always been something I don't really think about. Everytime I shade in something really dark it seemed to just look streaky and ew which is probably why I just paint and not draw so much lol. Now that I've seen what technique you use I see all the texture in your drawing and it has got me a little motivated to do what or at least something similar to what you do. Thanks a lot.

The best I've seen in a long time. Getting into drawing this was the only thing it thought I went to in style. It's very good to a small to a larger scale. All of your work is completely detailed and how each one is cought in the moment. The way you see is all I've been saying about professional art work. The pencil is perfect for the work at hand. And learning how with best description well put into words. Many thanks and many blessings to this vid. Drawing what you see is a realistic drawing technique. I bet if we take up more ideas and think of the imaginative complex Gene and watch this video we would find that it's not all just artfull but what it seems and can even be like Dan. Awesome and Koo.

I recognize that one drawing of Arnold doing curls! You are so right about loosing the composition and getting off track. I trace my outlines to start with. But i still quite often fiddle with something that just doesn't seem quite right, and end up "migrating" more more from the true composition. That is so unbelievably frustrating because you've spent hours getting that far, and i end up spend several more hours nudging such sublties, using my own pre-visualing.............which you just can't depend on most often.
Drawing what you SEE is excellent advice. Millions of tutorials out there and i've seen them all. Each trying to tell you how it's done using "techniques" and principles (aerial perspective etc). If you SEE it, just draw it and it takes care of the rest.

Hey!!! I draw with this technique! I found relativism to be the best proportional sketcher. Example: if the nose on the picture is 1 cm wide and you want it to be bigger on your paper then you could x5 , then you x5 every measurement you get -the eyes , the ears - the ear distance from the eye etc..
And I’ve found that As ive practiced this I’ve become so much more competent at free handing proportions...
But like wise seeing and translating detail in a incredibly realistic and patient way is still something that I definitely need help on!!!

I did this the other day, not to the extent you can do it. But it was my first attempt, with a very weak background in drawing. i was a doodler...but i looked at a statue of harley quinn, and then drew it on paper as a cartoon image, but then changed it to meet my needs. from spandex to leather with stitches. but then i shaded it with color pencils to look as if she was just standing somewhere, and the sun was not casting any particular lighting. but i was shocked..never did this..till after i have had weeks of just drawing random things from memory. so yeah ANYONE CAN DO WITH WITH TIME...and get really good at it too.

I tried the grid method today and I couldn't separate the squares from the whole. I have more success and fun doing free hand. it is nice to know some good artists do this. Maybe there is hope.

Also what i have learned when u have been drawing for awhile. When your eyes start to see everything running together. Or what your trying to draw running together....then u should not only take abreak from what your drawing. But while your still drawing turn your drawing upside down and look from that persepective. Well I learned that in middle school. Lol

I draw everyday I used to draw about 2-5 drawings a day and I was doing everything but I wasn’t taking my time to make sure I put everything I saw onto the paper I didn’t understand that i have to draw all the lines but now I’ve got it and I finish one drawing and have time to start another drawing cause it’s takes hours to get every detail I’ve gotten better and learned from mistakes cause I draw everyday if you don’t draw at least everyday then you can’t improve as quickly as you’d want too

What pencil do you use? It’s amazing! Not soo shiny or light like most hb-pencils and not too grainy (if that’s a word) like charcoal pencils.
