  • How To Find A Leak In Your Kayak - Plus Plastic Welding.
    After my last outing which almost ended in a capsizing, I needed to find out the cause of water intrusion. Much like finding and patching a hole in a bicycle tire, I used soap and water to fill the inside of the kayak and looked at the exterior for any leaking. This process is good for finding leaks but also to test any seals or mounts you have attached to your kayak. This day I found a nice size poke hole right in the center bottom of the kayak. With no other leaks, it was a quick and easy fix. Just got out my plastic welding kit and patched the hole. Good to go.

    Good job Steve...both intuitive and informative as usual. Perfect size hole (not too small having to look forever and not so big that you got stranded quickly)...Glad to see it was just a simple poke hole and quickly/easily found. MY GUESS: Check the area of that boat launch where you helped that guy catch Tarpon. I noticed your kayak was sitting sideways at the waterline during that video...it looks to me like there is possibly a piece of re-bar protruding up and scratched a couple times before you pulled it up for loading (thats what likely caused the looooooooong scratch beside the hole). Just my 2 cents, trying to help think in order find what/when/where that hole was made. Keep up the good work. What you do contributes positively to the fishing society and is appreciated.

  • @tyronekim3506
    @tyronekim3506 7 лет назад

    Good video. I'm wondering if you enlarge the hole just a tiny bit more and fit a filler plastic material with PVC glue as a bond, would work.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад +1

      The problem with kayaks is that not many things will bond to the plastic. I personally would not risk it unless someone can verify that it is compatible.

    I have a tandem kayak....it's 12 feet .it has 8 scuppers.when I fish in it solo there is virtually no water getting in.i take a second passenger ( child) same result not much water at all leaks in over a couple hours maybe less than a half gallon.....I put a buddy that weighs maybe 170 in it yesterday and within 5 minutes it had so much water in it we flipped! ! So I bench tested it to find leak and I filled the entire kayak all the way w water.after 10 minutes there was not one drop of water be leaking out.i know there could be a few reasons for this ie another place on hull above where water fill level was, but that would be a big crack screaming at me and easy to find...... I'm stumped how this is occuring.i know it IS occuring ,but how .any thoughts out there?

    If you ever need to do this in the wild without tools just find a piece of plastic and set it on fire then let it drip into the hole. Be ready with some water to put the fire out because it will drip fireballs!

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад

      Generally with kayaking, in the wild means on the water. Not so practical. LOL.

    • @3dcrazy332
      @3dcrazy332 7 лет назад +2

      Generally with kayaking in the wild would mean you are fairly close to land.... if not and you have a hole in your boat you might be in a little bit of trouble! My main point is that plastic is flammable. You don't need a torch or solder iron. You just need a lighter or matches (or two sticks). Plastic debris is all over the shores around the planet. Just set the plastic on fire and you can repair in the "wild".
