This is the 3rd time I am asking the same question, but for some reason, Studio Rats YT channel manager keeps deleting it 😂 Which speakers, cab type and mic did you use for recording this video? I mean, come on, is that such a difficult one to answer???
Studio Rats, would you please share the cabs, speakers and mics used for recording this vid? I am interested in the amp, would like to use same or similar gear to get that glorious sound! Thx
I met Michael of Modulus at the Birmingham guitar show, I asked him to build me a Talon head and 2x12 cab. Stunning amp, build quality second to none.I almost bought that red one on eBay.
Building a Tweed Deluxe Kit from Modulus - super friendly guys great help. Luckily a simple kit for a newbie nearly finished- just nervously waiting to plug it in!!!
James you find amazing amps for sale. What an arsenal you have acquired since building your new studio. You keep giving Paul more reasons to spend money. 😂
It's not point to point wiring. It's turret board. Both handwired but still different methods. If it was point to point there would be no board and the wires would go straights from pots to tubes etc with the caps and resistors either on the pots themselves and/or the tube sockets. Amp has a roughness around the edges I like. You can use your fingers and controls to smooth out a wild amp but you can't make a tame amp wild...without a wild pedal maybe.
Wow great sounding amp. What is the noise level like compared to a Marshall or Friedman? I am a Quad Cortex user and hoping to see this amp and more having QC captures on your site. Cheers,
Problem to me is right now I can't see anything that even comes close to the Katana Artist for the money. Plus 50 watts is WAY too much for most of us that mic up to PA. I'm running the Artist on a half a watt with the volume up in the global EQ and it ROCKS on stage and sounds awesome at any volume. I can fill a pretty big room any time I want up to 100 watts and the modeling is outstanding. Now with Bluetooth? I can't see anything coming that even comes close and the reliability of solid state and no heat? 43lbs and all that sound? Can't touch it boys....
Sorry, I don't share your enthusiasm. Solid state sure is practical, but sounds much less rounded and much more sterile, for lack of a better word... You can make a sales speach about it, convincing yourself and others, but the underlying fact is the very opposite - SS can't even touch valves, not the other way 'round.... This amp btw. is one of the best valve amps I've heard, so it would beat the harsh-sounding Katana in any blind test, any time
@@user-bh5yr7wc1v Appreciate the reply...have you tried the Katana Artist? I have a combo with the Waza speaker and couldn't be happier...and believe me...the audience can't tell the difference. For the weight and reliability I don't think it can be beat
@@awittypilot8961Nope, I have not. But the 2 gentlemen from Studio Rats have, pretty recently actually: ruclips.net/video/9QR69eRpoHk/видео.html . Thats actually very close to a blind test, as both amps are now recorded in the same studio, supposingly using the same or similar sound interface, etc. The only difference I see is that SR used (as they themselves confirmed to me in the commetns) Torpedo Studio for capturing the Gryphin amp, while the Katana amp was most likely recorded using its own cab sim with direct output to the card. OK, apart from this little detail, everything seems to be identical setup - wise, same studio, same player, same card... Try to be honest - go on, open these two videos in two separate windows side by side on your screen, and just do a simple comparison switching from one to another. What do you hear? Well, let me tell you what I hear. I hear clearly a round, velvety tube sound in case of the Gryphin (and, one must add, the actual sound of the amp is supposingly even better in real life , since here, it first hit the digital Torpedo cab sim box, which is not my particular cup of tea, frankly - Neural DSP Cabsism is much better sounding, just to name one...., while, of course, capturing the REAL sound of that amp would require recording via two decent mics, e.g. 57 + 102), whereas with the Katana amp, I can clearly hear a harsh, sandy sound to it, that I totally can't stand, as it implies digital modelling is involved. Sorry, you're wrong. Katana can't even touch this amp. Period.
@@awittypilot8961Just for the sake of objectivity, I did a little research - and here's a video I found about the Katana amp, pretty honest views coming from an Aussie 😊: ruclips.net/video/uSKHoHKXPg0/видео.html His remarks in the very end of the vid say it all as he compares the Katana gen 3 pre-release with a genuine tube amp. So there you have it, coming from multiple sources..... It doesn't line up with what you're saying at all. Peace out!
@@user-bh5yr7wc1v Thanks again but the 5ow is a toy or gimmick. The artist is AMAZING! The WAZA speaker sounds AWESOME and if you get into the tone studio you can get it to sund like pretty much any tone you want. BUt you have to get into the EQ both global and per channel. I run mine on .5w and it is PLENTY loud (we mic evrything). ruclips.net/video/3UNeXcy_JnA/видео.html
Paul, there’s an empress music in the UK on reverb they have a used Friedman red relic tele with a bigsby. Thought you might like to look. I didn’t know where else to put this. You can delete it after you see this. Hope it was ok to put. Again, delete this right away once you see it. You said u were looking for a Friedman. 🤫
Yeah sure whatever you say! What you also are not picking up is how they feel to play and how they respond. I can get a couple of my amps to sound similar but the response is very very different.
You know, you are right… these highish gain amps do sound now very samy and very good. Appreciate the response detail, but… there are no secrets left in amp design, everyone knows everyone else’s schematics etc etc… so it’s no wonder they are virtual clones. It’s a golden era for buyers out there if they can afford it, but it’s also a confusing time as there is so much choice. Bottom line… it’s more important now to have a competent tech to keep these amps going over the next few decades. My decision if I were ever in the market for this type of amp would be serviceability . But yes , they all actually sound the same, maybe feel different… but to a punter … Same.
I wouldn't say, no. Finally an amp that is not too bright.. as most pf them are. This amp sounds just Perfecto to my ears! ❤😂❤ Studio Rats, would you mind sharing what cabs, speakers, and mics have you used for this video? I am especially curious about the speakers... Thanks heaps!
is it hand wound or cheeky board? ah yes, hand wired, using "rugged turrets" ... hmmm..... rugged turrets . . . lolololololololo heard of em . . nice amps NOT POINT TO POINT! punt to punt uses no BOARDS AT ALL!!!! look at an old 50's alamo amp, point to point, ZERO boards or turrets, the wiring is wired point to point, no junctions, hence point to point, c'mon its in the descriptor FFS, point to point! OBVIOUSLY all P to P amps are hand wired .. hand wired simply means lack of PCB board, has a turret board but all wires are hand wired to said board, all wires are had wired to a PCB board as well... go figger, and generally means all capacitor are hand wired to the PCB boards, the older ones, dunno robots may be used today for all that, bigger operations anyways, so hand wired means lack of PCB board, instead of trace boards done by machines the wires are hand wired in a turret board amp .. generally all your wires are hand soldered to a PCB board amp, power transformers, output trannys, choke so forth all hand soldered to a board of an kind, so "hand" wired doesn't mean hand soldered, just means no traces, genuine wire instead . . point to point means no board at all . . .
These days it's almost impossible to find a bad sounding amp through all price categories. Having said that, your new aquisition sounds brilliant.
Great video gents, really enjoyed the first reaction feel of it. Glad to see the amp in good hands!

@user-bh5yr7wc1v it was a two notes torpedo studio load box. No one deletes comments, all comments good and bad are not removed
Thanx
Great to see a Gryphin Amp in the wild. Michael, who designs the amps, is a very talented man!!
How much coin for this amp? Any other models. Ahh, I know , I'll do a Mac Google search!

That's one of the best amps I have ever heard. Incredible. Definitely getting the Tonex captures.
Oh Yes..!!!
Loved those warm saturated clean tones

Nice to have this kind of find now and then isn’t it! Good work lads.
I've been using Modulus for all my amp parts for a few year now. Cool company.
Modulus Supa Deluxe looks insane too!
Inspiring intro, lads!
Incredible sound
Looks and sounds great !
Great find that one 👌🏻
I built one of their Deep Fried Marshbar amps. So Awesome.
A QC-capture would be great!

OK, I officially approve of this amp.
Modulus are the goto for amp kits, custom wound transformers and all amp accessories.
They’re based on kits u can get them built as an extra lots cab designs tweed etc face plates customise you own logo
Will there also be QC captures of this one made available? Noticed the Helios Eclipse wasn't available for QC either...

Better than a Marshall considering the amount of gain it has
New to me!
Sounds part American, part German. Like a Boogie and an Engl had a baby
ooooopppphhh unreal sound you lucky buggers no way thats going to be solds on

Unreal...

Could you share what kind of cabinet and mic did you use for recording this video? That amp is sick !! ❤
They all sound the same when you play them. No difference
That was my first thought when I heard this.
Yeah, digital pedal or tube amp, same awesome sound and riffs
