G'day Hobartian1, No reason why you can't learn to roll provided you have or can achieve a level of flexibility, and can relax and float in the water. Moira and I taught each other, first using books then DVD's. We found early on that filming ourselves was also helpful in identifying problems. Using these methods it took us two years of determined effort to achieve our first rolls! Now days we can get some people rolling in under ten minutes, so the best advise we can give you is to seek the help of local rollers. If you are in the Hobart area, I know there are some very accomplished folk there, so try contacting the local sea kayak clubs. Skilled rollers will get you going in no time, just beware of instructors who can not demonstrate the skills themselves. A low volume Greenland style kayak will make it easier to get started, and once you get the body working correctly, you will find the skills transfer very well to larger kayaks. So much good information is now available on DVD, well worth buying. Hope this helps, Cheers Greg and Moira.
Geggamoja var ett kul namn på produktionsbolag. :)
Thanks Enric! We're glad you enjoyed :-)
Moira & Greg.
I am seventy and been kayaking for about nine years without learning to roll. What is your opinion about my chances of developing this skill?
