  • I wanted to use a laptop computer to connect to my 3rd Gen Camaro ECM engine controller. I have been using an OBD1 scan tool, but this is an alternative that can provide some additional data. I purchased an ALDL cable kit from OBD Diagnostics. Running WINALDL has some challenges with Windows 10. It ultimately works, but there are some setup challenges. I walk through the process of installing the software and configuring the USB serial port and com port to be able to communicate with the ECM.

      You're welcome, glad that it helps. We need to use the OBD1 on these older cars, so I will be continuing to dig on these tools.

      @@bitsofwisdom460 can you tell me the cheapest OBD1 cable to get? I have a 95 Park avenue and can't get any reading anywhere

    • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460  Год назад

      @@marksmithjr00 I can't answer about cheapest, my source is OBD Diagnostics, Inc. Web page: obd2allinone.com/aldl.asp
      A 1995 Park Avenue is likely a special case. Should be 3800 V6 and many of those were OBD1 cars with early versions of OBD2 software. That means they are OBD1 cars that will give codes that look like OBD2 rather than the old 2 digit ones and you can't dump codes with a paperclip. Check your connector, because it may have the 16 pin OBD2 type connector. OBD diagnostics sells both older 12 pin and newer 16 pin OBD1 cables.

    • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460  Год назад

      The 16 pin OBD1 USB cable should send data to the OBD1 software packages like before, just the connector shell and pin out changed. Instruction sheet:

    YEEEES!! I've been waiting for this! Awesome!!
    Edit; Just watched the video, gonna try using winaldl too. Looks like a good software to use. I think you can set up a dash (upper right corner) and use the input of that if you don't trust your gauges. I've seen some use that
    How did you switch over to/from 10k-mode on your cable? Didn't quite understand the instructions on that on the paper. Got the same one. It has 4 tabs sticking out on the obd-1 end, what do I do with those? (Had a surgery in mid February so the painkillers weren't helping me comprehend things hah)

    • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460  Год назад

      I think WINALDL is a good one to use. The 10k mode is set with the jumper on the end of the cable. There are 4 pins sticking up on the connector and a plastic jumper that has a metal contact inside it. You need to pull the jumper off of the pins and move it to a different position. If you look at the instruction sheet, the jumper in "normal" position is across the contacts from one side to the other or not there at all. 10k mode is 10k across pins A and B by setting the jumper across the pins on the right hand side pins as you look outward toward the end of the USB plug. The other mode is A shorted to B across the pins on the left hand side. The jumper is just making an electrical connection across those pins.

    • @kmas8229
      @kmas8229 Год назад

      @@bitsofwisdom460 Aaaaah gosh dangit, I'm blind. I didn't see that the jumper was removable when I first looked at it haha. Now it made perfect sense. Took a second look at the cable today and now I feel somewhat ashamed. Weather is looking up, might take the car out of storage.

    Nice video. WinALDL is a fair tool but I didn't like how basic it was. But it did communicate with all sorts of ECM models. I have a 1987 V6 2.8L MPFI Fiero GT. In Normal Mode, the Fiero spits out 5 bytes of data: Mode Word 2 plus 4 bytes that were for a Fuel Economy display that was under development but never offered for the Fiero.
    I developed my own Diagnostic tool called the Fiero GT ALDL Monitor. I posted a video of it. The reason you need 2400 Baud is because the ALDL pulses that represent 1's and 0's look "sort" of like 8-bit RS-232 bytes at 2400 baud and those ALDL adapter cables read the the PWM 160 baud 1's and 0's as 2400 Baud bytes. But it's not a perfect match and the comm ports can get errors behind the scenes.
    I designed my ALDL tool to use my own Adapter that measures the 1's and 0's PWM pulses in real time and sends that over USB at 19200 Baud to the PC. I had to reverse engineer the Fiero ALDL data to figure out what the data meant and how to display it. Fiero ALDL data looks very similar to the Camero and if I had specs on all the various ECMs I could have adapted my GUI to all of them, but I decided to make mine dedicated for Fieros. My tool has a comprehensive graphing display that makes diagnostics very easy. I can even mark events on recording data that I can share with others. I offer my software for free but my special Adapter costs $45 (non-profit) as it uses an Adafruit Trinket M0 microcontroller and it changes the mode resistance via software control - no jumpers needed. It also has the ability to read the Service Engine Soon signal and display the Error Codes automatically (if you add that signal to the ALDL connector in the car).

      It sounds like you have done nice work for the Fiero enthusiasts. That is a good development for those controllers.
      Fieros were nice cars. I worked on the development of the 5 speed trans for the V6, it was a fun car.

      I can't confirm your application for certain, but ECM 16144288 is a valid part for a C/K truck based on part number search. Looking at the WINALDL site, they reference the ECM part number. You may need to inspect the ECM to see P/N what the label says. You also could try to see if the WINALDL data stream will connect. If WINALDL doesn't match up, I would try Tunerpro RT. They have a wider range of applications.

    What if my car is a '95 Buick Park Avenue with OBD1 computer but an OBD2 connector how do I make it able to run diagnostics I can't get it to connect to anybody's diagnostic tool

    • @bitsofwisdom460

      If you are using a standard scan tool, like my Actron 9690, the GM OBD1 systems usually require a 12 power connection in addition to the ALDL cable. The ALDL to USB cable does not need that 12v connection.

      WINALDL is specific to OBD1 GM controllers. I cheked TunerPro RT, but can't find any Toyota definition files.
      The Actron CP9690 scan tool claims to run Toyota OBD1 and comes with two different cables for that purpose. The following videos provide details about this tool and its sister tools. It had been out of stock for a long time, but I see that it is once again available.

    Very interesting for sure! Can actual tuning be possible? Or just through prom?

    • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460  Год назад

      I'm still investigating that. From what I have seen so far, these ECMs with a PROM require data collection then offline editing and burning a fresh PROM. However, there are some hardware tools with an emulator that will plug in to the ECM and allow direct programming. I'm not sure yet what is available and how difficult it is. In addition to WINALDL, I have started experimenting with TunerPro. Tunerpro appears to support hardware emulation.

      WINALDL will NOT work on this one, it is focused on earlier ECMs. TunerproRT should work with the correct ALDL cable. I can't confirm as I haven't tried it, but they have ADS / ADX files posted for the data stream definitions for many versions of 3800. It appears that 3800 series 2 1995 (all) is file 5B6.ads posted here:

      This particular version is specific to General Motors OBD1 cars.
      1996 and newer cars in the US are required to be OBD2 by law. You can still use a laptop, but need this cable and adapter:
      aldlcable.com/products/obd2usb.asp
      It requires some additional software that is provided in the kit. I have the hardware, but haven't done a video on that one yet.

    Hi WINALDL or CP9690 ?

    • @bitsofwisdom460
      @bitsofwisdom460  7 месяцев назад

      Good question. The answer is that it depends on what I am doing. For a quick diagnostic check, the CP9690 does a great job. It's quick and easy and compact enough that I can toss it in the back of the car when I 'm traveling, just in case I have an issue on the road. No need to worry about a laptop.
      The WINALDL provides some data and parameters that the 9690 doesn't and it helps to see them on the larger screen and in different layout rather than scrolling through them line by line in the 9690. Also, WINALDL is nice if you want to record data because the file sizes can be larger with many more data points.
