This is the best video I've seen so far about WWU. Thank you for taking the time. When you are considering coming in from out of state, finding great content is extremely helpful. Thank you!
OMG Daniel! I got my degree in Psychology and am finally working on grad school applications. Might just have to go to WWU again, hope you're doing well! I miss all our board game nights in Edens.
OMG hi Carolyn! It's great to hear from you. I wish the best for your grad school stuff :) I'm living in California now and still doing board game nights regularly with some friends here! If you're ever in the area you should totally stop by!
I am thinking of attending western for computer science but scarily enough there seems to be really little on their STEM offerings. As soon as I find out that they have a strong program with at least decent internship opportunities then I am applying right away.
Hi there! Thanks for your comment. I wish I could speak more to the CS program at WWU but I'm honestly not too sure about it. I know more about their biology and chemistry programs since I spent a lot of time in both. I will say, the best school in Washington for CS is UW, at least in my opinion.
@@daniel.gallegos Thanks for the suggestion but I heard that the acceptance rate for CS at UW has gotten so competitive that it is around 3-4% so I'm not sure if it's worth fighting for. I am considering going to UWB if not then WWU.
@@x12_79 sure thing. Ooh that's a really selective acceptance rate. I will say I have a few friends who did CS at WWU and they're all working good jobs. Not a guarantee of success, but a data point at least.
I’m a running start student at Olympic College, and I’m considering WWU for my bachelors. Do you know what programs they have that might be related to Criminology or Criminal Justice? Any related majors that they have that are similar? If so, do you have any helpful info on them? Thank you!
Hey man, great video, I have to pick between WWU and MSU. I would pursue the Urban Planning undergrad in WWU. I visited both and i love both. The programs at both schools seem amazing and belingham is definitely a nicer town than Lansing, but lansing has more of a collegey feel as half of its population is college students. So i just dont know what to pick. They both have there pros and cons.
@noahmilich4699 Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I wish you the best in your decision. Both schools sound good and it seems like you'll thrive either way.
Hi im at Green river in running start right now and im considering Western. Whats the social scene and what kind of financial system can be expected? Lots of student loans?
Hi, thanks for asking - I also went to Green River for Running Start before going to Western so that's cool! The social scene was great; WWU is a very outdoorsy school so people are constantly doing something in nature. WWU isn't really a party school but parties do happen. Lots of other more chill social events happen all the time. People are generally very chill but adventurous, if that makes sense. In state tuition is very cheap for in-state students. It's less than $9,000 per year for full time undergrads, and that is a fixed cost whether you're taking 12 or 18 credits a term. I recommend maxing out the credits as much as possible to maximize that benefit. For out of state students, the tuition is closer to $25,000 but thankfully there are lots of programs like Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) that help bring down that cost. I personally was able to earn enough scholarships to cover my tuition for my entire time at WWU, and took out about $20,000 in student loans for living expenses. But if I had been more frugal, I could have taken out less, closer to $10,000. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hey! Considering my options college, and I've been looking into WWU. Would you mind answering some questions? When you were in your dorms, did you find WWU walkable? Was there a strong school culture? What was the social scene like; were there any specific "scenes?" (Like music, mountain biking, etc.) I know in your video you spoke on not being super familiar with the computer science program. Is there anything you can say on it? I hate to bombard you with questions. Just interested in your experience! Thanks!
Hi, great questions! First off no need to apologize, I'm happy to help! I found WWU to be very walkable. The university has a student population of about 16,000, but the campus isn't too big. You can walk across the entire campus in about 15 minutes (min). Downtown Bellingham is about a 20 min walk from the center of campus, and another great spot called Fairhaven is about a 40 min walk (Fairhaven is definitely better to drive to though, unless you're taking a nice stroll with friends, in my opinion). I think the school culture is strong in the sense that lots of students are happy to be at WWU, but it's not as strong as it is at other big schools in WA like UW and WSU, where people regularly shout "Go Huskies" or "Go Cougs." I don't think I ever heard someone shout "Go Vikings" aside from some sporting events. The social scene was cool, there's always a ton going on. WWU is a very outdoorsy school so people are constantly hiking, snowboarding, biking, running, and otherwise adventuring. Some of these are run by clubs, others by friend groups, but people are usually welcoming and happy to have new people in either case. WWU isn't really a party school but parties do happen. Lots of other more chill social events happen more often - like my friends and I hosted or went to board game nights virtually every week we were living in Bellingham. I had a few friends in the computer science program and they seemed to have a good experience. One is now working as a sys admin and enjoys it. Another is an embedded systems engineer. Both of them are smart and I know they worked hard in the program, and I'm glad to say they're doing well in their careers now. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I am planning on studying in Biology next fall at WWU, Is there anything that you wish you knew before studying in Biology? or anything that I should and should not be doing?
Great question! Welcome to WWU. I wanted to study biology because I love animals but I wish I would've entered the program with a clearer idea of what I wanted to do afterwards. Here are some tips I would tell my past self: 1) If you want to become a biologist and research animals or other organisms, plan to get a PhD in a biological field. 2) If you want to go into industry, supplement biology with a minor or second major in computer science. That will open up a lot more doors than just a BS in Biology. 3) Do as much research as possible to learn whether you like biological research. This will help with grad school and future scientific jobs. 4) Even if you're not initially interested in medicine, choose the molecular and cell biology emphasis because it fulfills virtually all the prereqs for med school. You can always work different jobs for a few years and then do an MD. I hope this helps!
Hi, great question. Depending on where you are located, the cost may be lower than the base $26,000 tuition cost for out of state students. If you live in a state that participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange program, that would definitely bring the cost down. More on that program can be found here: www.wiche.edu/tuition-savings/wue/ Another factor to consider is scholarships. One of the reasons I chose WWU is that they offered me great scholarships for all my time there. If you're a competitive applicant, you may be able to get good scholarships to cover the out of state tuition. Feel free to DM me on LinkedIn for more specific questions.
hi! you said you double majored at wwu, and i was wondering how easy/difficult it was to double major? do you think it would be harder for something more cs related to double major? this is a great video thanks for the advice:)
hi! thanks for your question. The main difficulty with double majoring is the extra time required to do both majors. Instead of four years of undergrad, I did five (including two years of community college). For me this was worth it because I really enjoyed my experience, but the extra year may not be the best path for everyone. CS is an excellent double major to pair, it is harder than some other majors so if it's paired with something challenging it's definitely doable but will take more time and effort. Hope this helps!
@kayrellouis9902 I don't have any personal experience with it and I didn't know too many people in the marketing program. But if it's under the business school, I'd feel good about the quality.
