#97 - Review of Two WoodRiver Vises: Pattern Makers' and Gunstock

    Long ago, I drooled on the Tucker vise page of the Lee Valley catalog. Seemed really nice; seemed really expensive. So I punted and got a typical quick-release vise. Works great, for flat stuff.
    Recently, I took a class from Michael Fortune and had him over to my shop. Showed him my projects and he recommended these two vises from WoodRiver.
    The Pattern Makers' vise is an Emmert vise-like vise (as was the Tucker, which is no longer made). The Gunstock vise is a different style vise, but has a lot of uses.
    In this review, I'll show you what they do and how I used them on some curved and tapered table legs I'm working on right now.
    They aren't cheap so getting a chance to see them swing around and how you can use them is likely a good thing.

      Paul was posting on FOG (Festool Owners Group) just a few days ago regarding a dovetail jig question.
      So I think he is doing just fine and still looks like he is interested in woodwork.

      +AM0mentOfScience haha! Well, I took a break then got into circus arts and have been busy with that. However, I started a cabinet recently that will have some videos to show how to make sliding dovetails with the BCTW kit (so, toys!) plus I need to post a video of the chopstick maker pro. Anyway, slowly making my way back to the shop and videos. Thanks for the kind words :)

      +Half-Inch Shy Paul, I love your videos and you are by far my favorite youtuber. Thanks to you, I now have a number of Festool tools and I've learned quite a bit from you. I was just about to post on Sawmill Creek asking if anyone knew what happened to you because its been so long since we've heard from you.

    Enjoyed learning about these tools, I think I'd go for the gun stock vice first as it seems like it would be possible to modify it to deal with a lot of different shapes, the price is right too..

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  10 лет назад

      Yeah, I agree that if you had to buy one, that would likely be the best price/performance. No contest against a traditional quick-release vise.

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  9 лет назад

      Thanks, Filiph... I think I inadvertently took a hiatus from the shop; next episode planning and a lot of extra planning for an inlay series happened, but didn't get done yet. I hope to get back in the shop after the New Year to do those videos. Currently all I'm making in there are things needed to finish the remodeling I started on some rooms so long ago!
      Thanks, too, for your compliments :)

    That's a cool bunch of kit! Is it safe to say that your vice is buying vises? I thought that I was pretty familiar with Woodcraft's catalog, but somehow those escaped my attention. I can see where either one would be essential for non-square projects.

  • @foxesandfeathers

    which one would you rather have?
    the pattern makers vice looks like it might be able to replace the normal woodworking end vice but also have the benefits of the curved clamping

    What is that very cool looking plane that we can see when you switched to the gunstock vice (6:47)?

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  6 лет назад +2

      haha! I'm always impressed at how woodworkers watch the background (I do, too). That's a Bridge City CT-18 with the side depth skids attached. I love using that for planing thin stock to a consistent size. At the time of that video, I was doing a private workshop with Paul Schurch that included a bent laminate front table; I used the plane to get the laminates perfect.

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  8 лет назад

      +ronan o connell Thanks for the compliments, Ronan! I'll have to give the new releases a closer look to see which might tempt me. The cordless tracksaw definitely since I do edge jointing with the tracksaw often out on the driveway with 8-10' boards. The Vecturo is really intriguing (not new, but new for me) because I have a failed house remodeling project to correct with it... I shouldn't have trusted the guy at the store about which glue to use on cork in the stairs :/

      Hey Paul, thanks for replying. Nothing worse than someone pretending to know what they are talking about!! When ever anything goes wrong for me,I say to myself, at least I'll learn from this because I might have never come across the problem before, well that is my way of thinking it wasn't a total waste of money :D :D. I'm after buying and PDC 18/4 and CTL SYS for the job site, so cant wait for them to arrive. Your demonstration of how the t15 Impact works was brilliant so I think ill get it for them times when your in a bit of a jam. I'll look forward to seeing your next upload.
      Ronan.

      realmezz So the story goes that I ran off and joined the circus, which isn't too far from reality... I got interested in circus arts and got all absorbed in that along with some personal things so it became a woodworking break of sorts. I'm catching up tonight on comments and spent the day cleaning the shop that got walloped while doing a house-purge late last year. Should be recording new episodes mid-May. Thanks for asking! :)

    Hi Paul
    Another great video. Do you know if these vices are available in the UK ?
    Thanks Geoff

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  10 лет назад

      Have no idea. A quick google of WoodRiver sold in UK shows up next to nothing except their hand planes at this site: woodworkersworkshop.co.uk/Planes/WoodRiver Maybe contact them and see if they could carry either/both vises. As they buy bulk of the planes, maybe adding a couple of these to the shipment would be easy enough and save on you paying what would be three first-childs to ship the big heavy box it comes in from the US.

      +jp morso Thanks for the check-in. Yes, things are fine. I was busy with work, needed a break from video, then discovered a circus school in town. No, not kidding :) I am in the shop now trying to catch up on unfinished home projects and will get back to videos after that. I mean, two years to complete a bathroom is crazy, but I was putting it off because there was always another video to do :) It'll happen soon enough.

    If I start a rumor on RUclips and the FOG that you faked your death and ran away with the circus (not far from the truth) will you then be pressured to come back? Maybe do a "No I'm not dead video?" I mean we're talking 15 mins of your time here! Haha!
