This whole song is actually a pretty good example of reincorporation! The original Love Psalm was an instrumental piece that played during the credits of the "Born From a Wish" segment of Silent Hill 2. If you recall the plot of SH2, Maria is actually an apparition created by Silent Hill to torture James for killing his wife. In essence, Maria is, well, Born from a Wish, James' desire to punish himself warps reality and creates a new person from nothing. It's only fitting then, that Love Psalm reappears in Book of Memories, which is a game about modifying reality based on your wishes and the dark consequences that can cause. Pretty good!
I kinda reinterpreted Maria's presence a little differently, but I love your take on it! I kinda thought she was a psuedo wet dream brought to life for James, a visage of his desire for what his wife could be, a sleazy tiger skirt adorned woman who manipulates the hell outta' him. Either way, great song 🍻
It's pretty fitting then that this song features both Troy Baker and Mary McGlynn since they voice James & Maria in SH2 HD which came out around the same time as BoM.
@@simpcatcher131yes7 She is, but she's also there to torture him. By having to watch his idealised version of Mary die over and over again no matter how hard he tries to save her, James is forced to face up to the reality that he killed her. Most of the enemies in SH2 have to do with James's sexual frustration and the revulsion James felt for Mary's disease by the end (ever checked out Mary's in game model from the In Water ending? Those skin textures man... jeez), and Maria represents his ideal fantasy version of Mary - sexy, flirty, mysterious and dependent on him to protect her. And no matter what he does, he can't ever save her.
Another way I like to see it, is that Maria actually was how Merry was when James was terribly in love with her, hence she was literally born from a wish, James wish to see his beloved Merry again.
Tom Hulett responded to a tweet of mine a few months back and he said it was a "pet idea" of his to rework one of the classic instrumentals into a fully vocalized song! It was also his way of sneaking Akira Yamaoka onto the game's OST

What if you were given the chance to destroy the force that would eventually corrupt Silent Hil's ability to manifest human thought. What if you could save all the poor souls that wondered into that town, or into the other world? The characters wouldn't grow in person, but they would be spared an arduous journey by blood and darkness
By the way, Love Psalm in itself is a Silent Hill 2 Theme. A version without lyrics can be found on the soundtrack, but I don't remember when it plays in the game itself.
It plays at the ending of the Born from a Wish scenario of Maria in the Director's Cut, or the base PC version
I have no idea why but they recently removed this from spotify...

Stop hating. She didn't come up with the idea, people asked her. So she sings it. I like it, personally. She has a good voice. And what does it matter that you don't like this remix? Just listen to the original and stop putting up useless comments.
