As a young sailor, I served in Vietnam from June 1970 until just before Christmas 1971. My work took me from Da Nang to Rach Gia, and all through the Mekong Delta by land, boat, and air. I have many, many fond memories of the Vietnamese people I met and worked with along the way. One Vietnamese commander struck me as more of an uncle looking after his extended family, occasionally looking in on our lovely young receptionist/translator, Miss Nguyen Thi Tham, I had the great good fortune to work alongside with while in Cam Ranh Bay. Her smile and laughter would warm the coldest heart. After I left Vietnam to start college, I immediately sent her a large box filled with bolts of cloth, sewing materials, snaps, buttons, zippers and soaps, shampoos and cosmetics as a sort of farewell gift. She and her mom liked to (had to, actually), sew and mend their clothing to keep looking lovely. I included a new, clear rain slicker for her as hers bore evidence of repairs to snaps and buttons. A few weeks later, I received a lovely letter from her, with photos of her smiling and wearing her new rain slicker during a shower in Da Lat. She was unforgettable, a beautiful orchid gracing each day I was in Cam Ran Bay. I had an adventure with some Vietnamese navy officers, going fishing with them in the outer bay area one night. I had been intrigued by the lighted boats in the outer bay area, and they invited me to go one night. I got in trouble with my American executive officer next morning for not asking for permission (which I knew I would not have been granted, of course): "That's your last fishing trip with the Vietnamese navy, sailor!" I returned to our little office; my division officer and sweet Miss Tham all knew in advance that I was in trouble -- and we all had a good laugh. Earlier, while down south, I was assigned to the Seabees' civic action program, where small teams were assigned to provinces to do work with the local communities (schools, generators, parks, roads, and so on). So many memories, almost all of them good, even though the war would occasionally make its presence felt. On our street, now, (Oregon) we have several wonderful Vietnamese families with us. Two old ladies who walk (and gossip!) together escaped from Vietnam in about 1978 on boats, as did one very nimble Vietnamese grandpa (he's 84!) who was an MP in Saigon and got captured and finally was able to flee by boat a few years later himself. I see him occasionally zipping up and down the street on an electric scooter, enjoying himself. Wonderful neighbors. Glad you enjoyed your visit to the lovely country of Vietnam! And, oh yes, the "schools" of motor scooters were just as scary back in 1970's Saigon. I remember being terrified of hitting anybody when I drove around town in a Jeep or van. But I got used to it soon.
Your story was about free, capitalist South-Vietnamese before 1975, whose characters/personalities could be compared to Taiwanese's or South-Korean's. The Vietnamese people currently living in Vietnam are very different, as they've been indoctrinated with maxism, worship Putin and still view America as enemy/invader (especially for those living north of 17th parallel), although, like Chinese, "to badmouth the US is the job, to live in the US is the life". Vietnamese food is too watery for my taste, Thailand still reigns supreme! oh and Vietnam would have incurred more damage if China did not warn the US not to cross the dividing line between north and south, the US respected that because of their experiences in Korea, basically you Americans didn't have all the options and fought with your hands tied, add to that a maturing media landscape rendering old school butcheri undoable, and yes Vietnam gave China a bludy nose because of intelligence failure and arrogance as well as a slightly different objective which concerns Cambodia, it was a defeat for China and the US in the end, one due to arrogance and one due to restraint respectively; if the US fought like in WW2 here in the Philippines then we can all say goodbye to the Vietnamese as they would have been blitzed in Hanoi, if the French can conquer Indo-China then the US can too if they had the same freedom of operations as the Early Colonial French, it would be a blud bath without any news reports about it until the w@r is over but we live in a modern world where w@r cr1mes are a thing.

Vietnam liberated Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge in 1979, and continues to heavily influence Cambodia. Both are Buddhist. Hun Sen fled to Vietnam, joining troops there opposed to the Khmer Rouge. He returned to Cambodia after the Vietnamese installed a new government in 1979 and was made minister of foreign affairs. He became prime minister in 1985. If you mean Cambodians are different to the Vietnamese, this is certainly the case, to say there is nothing in common is denial.
@@johnbaker5565 The recent history of Indochina brings nothing to roots of both cultures and demography. There's a strange idea from westerners that they often think the French had left a lot of influences on Vietnamese culture and mindset (some even said genetics!!!???). I reckon this prejudice comes from a fact that other colonies of westerners are often influenced deeply in their cultures like in South America and Africa. But this is a wrong thought in case of Vietnam (and maybe Cambodia as well). The occupation of the French in Vietnam is too short and always met with strong resistance of the Vietnamese, therefore it only leave a light trace on the surface of Vietnamese culture and mentality. You are wrong in your assumptions because you don't know that actually Vietnamese have very long and tough history of resisting foreign invasion since 2000 years already, this produced very dense core of Viet spirit that makes foreigners hard to influence. The exceptional case is Chinese influence, only because too long time and brutal forcing from China in around recent 1,500 years continuously. The 80 years of French colony is nothing in our mentality and culture. And politics as well as foreign relations have nothing to do with both culture and genetics of Vietnamese. Vietnamese had the tradition of not marrying in for the line of men and restricting marrying out for the line of women with foreigners. It's our ancestors' creation to avoid assimilation from neighboring enemies, or actually Chinese. Yeah nowadays you will say that's racist as hell, but your nowadays is only maximum 200 years (and I doubt about its future) while thanks to this rule, Vietnamese people could stand still, survive and exist next to the brutal giant from the north after 2000 years of brutal and cruel invasion, ruling and assimilation. I can only say that our ancestors were very very intelligent and wise that they could see far in thousands of years to preserve our linage, because mixing yourself with your enemy is the fastest way to go to destruction of your people. Look at other countries and peoples that had existed in the mainland China, there were various peoples and countries before, but they made a mistake to mix with Chinese and then they disappeared. Nowadays, there're only Vietnamese, Koreans and Japanese surviving from Chinese assimilation. Therefore we share some parts of common politics and colony history with Cambodians but it makes nothing change in my statement that Vietnamese have nothing in common with Cambodians both culture and genetics.
Thank you so much for your service ❤
Your story was about free, capitalist South-Vietnamese before 1975, whose characters/personalities could be compared to Taiwanese's or South-Korean's.
The Vietnamese people currently living in Vietnam are very different, as they've been indoctrinated with maxism, worship Putin and still view America as enemy/invader (especially for those living north of 17th parallel), although, like Chinese, "to badmouth the US is the job, to live in the US is the life".

Nice.
China has been buying up farms in Vietnam.
70% of Vietnamese people have sympathy for China? Where do you get this data? Vietnam hates China as number 2, so no one dares to claim number 1.

I just got back from VN last December. It's one of my favorite places in Asia. I was in Phu Quoc which even now is still an underrated gem. I guess it's Vietnam's answer to Hainan. Such a tiny country, yet it has so much to offer. Yes, the people are genuinely friendly and helpful and so hospitable. One day I fell off my bike after skidding and immediately, someone rushed to my aid. They have so little (financially) and yet they're so happy. Great place to buy coffee beans, by the way! I miss VN.
Lei, you were worrying about being able to find authentic Vietnamese food in the US. Has no fear! There're multiple cities in America where you can find authentic and excellent Vietnamese food. Little Saigon in Orange County, California, Houston in Texas (Bellaire Ave.); Washington DC (Eden Center in Virginia) are some of the places you can visit. In short, everywhere there're large concentrations of Vietnamese-American communities, you will find good food.

As an American, I have nothing but respect for Vietnam. They sent the Americans home empty handed. Vietnam got rid of Pol Pot. Plus, Vietnamese instant noodles are the best of any country.

The Khmer Rouge was created by the CCP

Good video! My wife and I went to Vietnam three months ago and really loved the country and especially the people. For a "socialist" country there sure is a lot of capitalism going on! The city traffic is scary at first but we got used to it. No mass transit or big highway systems, so everybody has a scooter -- it seems to work well. We were in HCMC/Saigon and I liked the mix of modern high-rise together with a lot of old French colonial architecture. The friendly and helpful Vietnamese people were the best part of our stay. I'm going back again soon.

I've been to mainland China 4 times, Taiwan 4 times, and recently got back to Vietnam for the 4th time. Obviously Vietnam has a much smaller population and hence smaller economy that China, but given that, my impression is that things here seem to be developed with more thought. There seems to be a lot less waste. Compared to Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand I've seen less corruption here with my own eyes, but I've heard from people who lived here that it absolutely exists. But I've only been in small rural areas so far on this trip and my previous trip is 9 years ago so this comment is a mix of outdated impressions and new first impressions.

Christians are also persecuted in China, especially the house churches.
My parents fled from China due to the religious persecution of Christians. It's a subject that is difficult to discuss publicly, because of the sensitive nature. But it's definitely a conversation that should be had; especially when the western world turns a blind eye to the fact.
People seem to hyperfocus on Uyghurs, Xinjiang, and the Falun Gang...
But the oppression touches everyone.
More unfounded claims about Chinese persecution. By the way, did you know which country has the largest Christian population? It's not Italy, Spain, France, the Philippines, or any country in South America. Surprisingly, it's China. Yes, you heard that correctly. All these individuals who complain about persecution are actually old-timers from the Maoist era who are still dwelling in the past.

@@TrangNguyen-tn9pb May I highlight some commonalities, Both were a part of French Indo China. The founding communists spent time in France where they evolved their political understanding.
Viets are Viets, Cams are Cams, we don't mix.years years
@@johnbaker5565 even the Buddhism in Vietnam is also another branch of Buddhism compared to Buddhism in Cambodia. Cambodia is heavily influenced by Indian culture, Vietnam is influenced by Chinese culture in outer layers while still preserve our core spirit.
Looks like a fantastic experience lei
This will be an interesting video. As a Vietnamese who have gone back to visit several times for vacation, I have made several observations about Vietnamese politics and how the people of Vietnam (both North and South) view their government. I have another trip coming up that will focus on central Vietnam…I’m very curious to know the general outlook of central Vietnamese. I think no matter the information shared by Lei in this video, it’s important for everyone to understand and keep in mind that there are over 100 million Vietnamese. The gamut of views the Vietnamese people possess are varied and wide ranging. I implore viewers not to pigeonhole the Vietnamese populace.
There is one language and mindset: power is king.
Politics on the side.
As a Vietnamese who studied in the USA, I know it’s a shame to admit that Vietnam could be more enjoyable if the people didn’t throw garbage everywhere and sold food with hygiene and safety. Unfortunately, this mindset passed down from one generation to the next continues to be inconsiderate of others; hence, the indiscriminate littering and lawlessness traffic.

Yes but I wonder if Champa should be freed/restored just like Hong Kong, Tibet and the Uighers or if the VCP is persecuting minorities like the CCP, some of the most important issues that Lei have missed while in Vietnam. Or even if the Third Republic of Vietnam should be given any attention and aid to the same degree as the ROC in Taiwan. Or if the SRV/VCP is considered to be questionably legit at all just like the PRC/CCP, in contrast to the DTVNCH and ROC/KMT being the real Vietnam and China. Lots and lots and lots of crucial and juicy prudent things yet to be answered. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

, Thank you for your Channel real enjoyed Lei's Real Talk and best information, with this point of view I am very appreciated.
I’m an Ozzie who has been to Vietnam many times but China only once so will restrict my comments mainly to Vietnam. They are a very generous and good hearted people with a strong work ethic. I have found the Chinese people to also be very welcoming and industrious. The Vietnamese government should also be praised by allowing more freedom of worship with less traditional religions such as Christianity…. Unfortunately Chinas religious freedom (certainly in regards to Christianity) has become more restrictive in recent years.
