Good stuff Leah. Splines can also be decorative. I recently used dark walnut splines to accent my wifes old pine sewing box.

I meant to say this process is faster than a half lap miter joint or a mitered bridle joint. Thanks for reading the non existing letters my brain is a bit scrambled this week.
how do you measure/ cut the spline to fit? thanks for the great work, Leah.
If u don’t want to do a spline. Apply a coating of glue to both pieces end grain. Allow to soak up glue and get tacky to touch. Then add more glue to both pieces and clamp 👍🏼 still not as strong as a spline but better than just gluing up the joint

Hi Jane, great video I use this to build my frames. But I noticed you used a flat blade as I do. Might be a good idea to mention to use a flat tooth blade so it does not discourage the beginners. Thanks for all the tips

Hi Leah i love your videos! They are brilliant. The mire joint was good, ive never seen that way done. Problem is l don't have a bench saw like what you have. So that idea is no good for me unless theres another way round it.

How thick should a spline be? Thank you for your very informative videos.
Hi Kathy, it should be approximately 1/3 the the thickness of your stock. For example if your stock is 3/4" thick, your spline should be 1/4" thick or less.
Is it possible to use a router to get this joint, and is it possible to modify this jig to work with a router table?
Do the three pieces of wood need to be the same type of wood? Do these type of joints do well in the weather? I am concerned about if swelling and shrinking would break the joint.

Hey Leah, what do you suggest for a miter joint when making a shadow box type frame (it's actually a dice box)? I'm using pine and the pieces are 3/4" thick and approx 2" wide (tall). The dimensions of the box are only going to be about 9"X 7". I was just planning on glue and my nail gun, but after watching this i thought there might be a better way. I'm not savvy enough yet to use dove tail joints at this point. I'm also planning on routing out the bottom inside of the box so i can drop in a 1/4" mdf backing. Any thoughts on the corners?
It doesn't have to be a single spline, you can use two or three splines in the same miter joint. You'll have a strong joint and it will resemble a finger joint. Hope this helps.
Well, I usually agree with you on everything. You give very interesting information. However, on this one, I don't think "beginners" would have a table saw. Speaking for myself, I could never make a joint like that and never will because I'm a beginner and always will be the "around the house carpenter". Which means I will never own a table saw for minor projects.
@@gl15col yeah actually i had this problem once, when i had to reinforce a miter joint, and i had no table saw with the right jig to do it nicely. I decided to use dowels from that side which are not visible.
Well, to be fair, some beginners *DO* go all out with their equipment purchases. You can be a beginner with lots of tools or very experienced but with fewer tools. To that end, I can see how this might be just right for a beginner who happened to own the required tools -- or have easy access to them.
Great video but you didn't tell us how you attached the wood pieces for the miter jig. Glue? Nails? Screws? You don't have to show us the actual work but maybe you can add some voice over saying what you used for fasteners. Thanks. Love your videos!

With an handsaw and/or a round file, kept at a 45 deg angle.
Kinda long and boring, but it's the cheapest way AFAIK.
The best way to do this is buy a table saw, or wait till Christmas, 👍
Biscuit jointer works
@@johnblackburn7673 a bit complicated because the bisquit jointer does not designed for corners, but yeah, its possible.
You can do that with a fine tooth back saw. But it needs some practice to cut straight.
Where did the spline (insert) come from? Did you make that or can they be purchased?
You can easily build it.
Let's assume that you have a 1" wide spline slot. Cut a 1" thick piece of wood in order to obtain a perfect square. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite one, in order to split the square into two identical triangles. Then, cut along the line.
That's it!

How many beginner woodworkers have a table saw?
If u plan in advance most do. One of the first tools you buy.
Glue resists shear (sliding) stress but fails in tension (pulling) stress. The addition of a spline means you have to exceed the glue's shear strength to get the joint to break. Joint biscuits work on the same glue shear strength principal. I doubt end-grain vs. long grain had much to do with it at all.
Hi Tracey, actually, the gluing the long-grain sides together, vs the end-grain sides, is a fundamental principle of gluing.

For sure, although I was able to get a hold of it a few weeks ago, I just checked and his plans can still be downloaded at no cost. I just happened to go'ogle Woody Hyezmar's Woodworking Bible and got it before he decided to sell it or something lol, have a good one!
I recommend Woodprix to every beginner and not only.
