I'm growing a Dahlia from a tuber this year. I grew from seed last year and enjoyed them so much. I do grow them in pots. I just stay on the watering detail regularly. Love all the information on Dahlia growing!
Small dahlias are baby diapers. Need to have some real 6-7 feet tall adult dahlias with their sunflower seedhead dinnerplate size. THEN you have DAHLIAS !!! Deep reds, red and orange, deep orange, orange and yellow, deep yellow, yellow and white, white, lilac, deep lilac, blue, deep blue, lilac and blue, green, deep green, green and blue, pink, deep pink, pink and red, pink and white - a whole circus of colors. Some say that dahlias (as perennially grown locations where the plants turn into shrubs and bushes - they could grow as much as 30 ft tall ! Yeeeeeee-haaaaaahhhhhhh !!!! Now that's what I am talking about !!!! As big as a perennial Mexican poinsettia shrub-tree.
Rebar comment: I tie an orange surveyor’s tape to the top of the rebar because I’ve almost ‘put my eye out’ a couple times, bending over a plant, forgetting the rebar is there. Great video. I haven’t started my dahlias indoors yet but getting ready. 5” more snow this morning. Not nearly as pretty in late April 20 as it was in November, 😂😂. Thank you!!
Another great video! I put the stake in the planting hole beside the tubers, BEFORE covering the tuber with soil. This way, I avoid stabbing any part of the tuber. I have been growing dahlias in my front garden, in full sun, for many years now. Since I don't have enough room by my sunny window, I plant the tubers directly into the ground, without pre-sprouting, after the last frost. They never disappoint. I live in Ontario, Canada, growing zone 5 by US standards.
Love these dahlia videos. Started my tubers inside about 5-6 weeks ago when you posted the cutting video. They're looking great but the "spring" in Salt Lake has been sooo cool, my soil is no where near warm enough to plant them. My poor tomato plants go out a bit during it day but they're still in at night (i.e. not in the ground).
I grew dahlias in raised bed 2 yrs ago n they seemed easy n prolific. Tried growing in pots last yr when i was out of town for 6wks n hubby was wTering 4 me. Came back to huge weeds n no dahlia flowers whole summer except dwarf ones i had planted in a reaized bed. Cleared out my oval raised bedto plant them in this yr n instead of verticle staking ndividually, im going to try horisontal netting on 1.5 n 2.5 ft levels across bed. Also, didnt know 2 pinch dahlias. Wish me luck! Thx Brian! ;)
This year is my first time growing Dahlias. Thank you for the tips. I want to see how they do. If they turn out ok I will get more for next year and probably split up the ones I have too.
Love the video as always. I do love dahlias, and grow them every year in pots. I'm an apartment dweller with a front porch and walkway, so I take advantage of every square foot that is available for growing anything and everything. You're great, keep up the great work!
I potted my dahlia tubers yesterday. I'm not able to plant mine out in my zone 5b until the end of May. Last year I grew the ball type and this year I'm doing the dinner plate. Bonny
Thank you for this video! I was considering dahlias this year but had no idea on how to grow them and decided to wait until I did more research. Perfect timing on this video! I will definitely give them a try next year if I don't this year!
Yay the Dahlia video!! 🥳🥳 I was a bit bummed when you said you don't recommend containers cause I rent and can't really plant in the ground. But I'm gonna try and find dwarf sized ones.
I've usually grown my dahlias in the ground, but have experimented in large pots. I will try to put the shorter varieties in pots and leave the big ones for in ground. (The large ones in pots needed too much water and tipped over regularly!)
A friend gave me one bare root dahlia. I was going to put it in a container, but after watching your video, I am going to plant it with the tomatoes. Thanks for the info, Brian!
Love your dahlia videos, Brian. Dahlias do well in my garden but some years are better than others. I do have a couple new ones that I’m trying this. Also, I can’t wait to try out your instructions on dividing them. Thanks for all that you do.
I tried growing dahlias two year ago in a container and they didn't bloom. I heard that they won't bloom in. So this year I'm going to try to put them in the ground. This video was helpful, because I didn't do any fertilization last time and this time I'm definitely going to do it and see what happens. As always, thanks for your valuable information.
Potted up tomatoes today. We’re supposed to get down to 35 this weekend so I’m going to wait to put the rest out. The ones in ground already will have to get covered.
Any advice? Should I leave it alone? I bought a potted dahlia last season. Cut it back when it was done blooming. Brought it in the house, the room was so warm it started growing. I put it in an unheated garage , in Delaware. Didn’t cut the sprout, no water no light all winter. Put it inside a few weeks ago intending to separate the tuber. I didn’t because it was already growing , 🤦♀️

Hey Brian, thanks to your videos I am going to grow dahlias for the very first time this year. I am super excited to see how it goes, but sadly I think that I will have to relocate my existing tuber I stuck it in a pot!
I'm finishing my first year growing dahlias! Sadly, I was decimated with grasshoppers and earwigs. I lost about a month or more of blooms. I am planning on digging out the tubers and bought 4 more fancy ones online. Thanks for the tip about putting in a drip system; first year EVER that my garden didn't die (redoing some sections and expanding others for next year).
Hi, I love Dahlia . black leaves , 1st time i heard about the flowers are so special. Wish to plant it once I get the seedlings after home from my travels later on. Thanks for sharing, sir.
We planted just one city light lavender pink dahlia from a nursery pot in early April in North Carolina. After the 4 blooms died off, the plant grew wider and wider with no new blooms but lots of green leaves. Filling up the spaces in our butterfly garden. Don't know if we should trim back some of the green leaves or wait and see what happens. It is now early summer and temperatures have reached 85-90 degrees on some days. What do you think we should do? We are fearful it might take up too much space. Thanks
Thanks so much for this Brian, a friend gave me a dahlia last year and I was so knocked out that I now have 14, which given the small size of my garden is a lot, so all your advice is invaluable 🌹🍾❤️
Last Summer I planted a bunch of dahlias, those planted in the ground all flowered and were beautiful. Those in my pots barely hung on, because I didn't water as needed. But these in the pots are viable this season, now looking for eyes in order to plant in the ground. Thanks Brian - great info!
Omg! I'm laughing at your analogy of earwigs to politicians😂..... Love your sense of humor! Hello from the SF Bay Area...where even democrats are getting fed up with some of our Dem politicians!
Pretty sure I already killed my dahlias. I divided them and tossed them in the ground a couple of MONTHS ago when we were still occasionally dipping into the 30's at night. Now suddenly, we are pushing 90 during the day.... Ugh, SoCal weather....
I purchased my first dahlia from the clearance rack of a local nursery last year. It was potted in a nice pot and labeled as an annual. But I stored it in the garage all winter and never watered it. I wasn't sure if it had made it or not, but I set it out on my deck about a week ago and it's sprouting now - hooray! Since it's already potted, should I take it out of the pot and amend the soil, or can I just dig a hole near the base and put the bone and kelp meal in there?
When you were filling the pot, what mix was in the bag? Just a mix of potting soil? Living in Central México now and understand I can grow them year round.
I started dahlias is pots in the spring. I'm in So WA. When do I cut them back? And should the tubers be dug up over winter? I may put them in the ground for next year.
Thank you for covering the ins and outs of Dahlias. But every video I watch on dahlias always covers planting the tubers, but I’m on the cheap and started my dahlias from seed. I have yet to see a video that covers planting out from seed , and started inside. Is there’s anything special to be concerned about? Or is it just like planting any other flower? I realize this might be a very stupid question.
I have been growing Dahlia’s for many years which started with a few bulbs my grandmother gave me but now have a large number. 95% of the flowers are white though. Could the colour of Dahlia flowers change due to the soil composition the same as hydrangea’s do?
Sir, my dahlias plants are in pots and doing very well growing in 3-4 ft then suddenly bugs & insects eaten them away. I was so sad because I so looking forward to see them bloom. What do I do?
Hi Brian watched one of your many videos re your brussels sprouts I two was having issues with that non producing and elderly farmer in my area advised I cut off the center sprout which comes first guess what within two weeks lots on stock so hope you try a couple again. I'm in BC Canada very hot summers. Have a great season.
Thank you for your video! Im starting to grow dahlia from tubers this year in pot because despite having the anti slug pellets they still do attack my dahlias
👋 This is the first time growing dahlias. So I put the tubers in a tray to get them started. I think I made the mistake of putting them in a west window that has some shade. Now they are a little leggy, and leaning towards the light. What can I do to correct this? I’m afraid to pinch them and kill them😢
How to you save one that looks dead that was given to me. It was flowerings and came from a big box store. Now it doesn't look so good. Thanks for your videos.
I watched a man that does container gardening, his method is different and I would like you to take a look at his video and let us know what you think. His site is Gardening With Leon. Thanks for all you do.
Hey Brian, HUBBY is finally getting vegetables to grow. It's sinking in now finally 🙌 🙏 LOL 😄 we are slow learners, but finally getting results 🙌 😄 Thank you Brian. ❤ Love yall 💓 💕 💗 ❤
I can’t seem to get mine to grow dug them up and they look dried out. I tried the tray method to get them to sprout….I was afraid to water them as I heard they don’t need water until they start spouting leaves…. The purple eyes came up but then died
Thanks for this video, Brian. I've lucked into some clumps of Dahlias [no idea what they are which makes it kinda exciting] but I'll be able to avoid errors made before which resulted in their disappearance. We do live in Slug land; in fact we have a Slug Queen Contest / Festival in Eugene, Oregon. Appreciate your help. Donna H in Marcola, OR
I planted mine in the ground in Feb, hadn’t watched your videosbwfore! They have started sprouting now 😂 One of the tubers I left in a bag accidentally, sprouted sooner. It’s 2ft tall already 😝
I watched this video back when you first posted it and then about 2 weeks ago my local Home Depot had all their Dahlia tubers marked down to 50% off and I bought at least one of each color they had. (I bought multiples of the colors I like most) I brought them home and started them in my greenhouse on a heat mat and WoW!, did that ever work well! I planted 4 of them in my garden yesterday and have 5 more in containers. One of the containers will be re-planted into the ground but the others will stay. I am constantly in my garden and so I'm not worried about any of them drying out. Thank you So much for all this information. They are a favorite of mine, along with Zinnia and in summer I always have bouquets of them both in my home. (I'd Love a video of you cutting yours back after they have 3 sets of leaves, that's a little scary to me)
Love dahlias and hope to grow some with success. I stumbled upon your videos and I have learnt a great deal about why my garden doesn’t grow the way I have always dreamed of. Thank you! I have a question, do dahlias do good left in the ground over winter? How do I winterize them?
Thank you so much for all the information. I bought a dahlia in mid May and wasn't aware of everything I'm doing wrong. Hopefully, I'll be a pro soon because they are my favorite flower.
My daughter loves dahlias but would have to keep them inside or on her porch. She lives in very cold climate. Would you recommend growing dahlias for her?
Hi Brian Have a tuber my neighbor gave me pretty purple sunflower petals. Got a couple from discount store red n white. Have six seedlings I grew from seed. Have several Violas and petunias and snapdragons that are coming up.
I’m growing dahlias from seed again! So easy 50 cent seeds🙌🏻 from Walmart. They remind me of daisies. I have a micro climate out front of my house. Didn’t add more mulch and experimented leaving them in the ground and they turned to mush. My new seedling are doing great! Already hardened off , just waiting on Mother Nature🙌🏻
I know here in 9b El Cajon i dont have to dig up my tubers for winter but should i keep watering them thoughout? Or stop watering completely till i see new growth in the spring?
I started dahlias indoors this year. I started them early and now my dahlias are 1 ft. Tall and leggy. What should I do at this point. The temperature is good for planting them up now but do I cut them back? How do I do that? I was very successful at getting them to sprout but now I’m not sure what to do.
I grow mine in pots because of gophers. I have one very large one that I did put in the ground with a gopher cage around it. Luckily I live near the coast in N.California and we rarely get over 70° so watering is not a problem.
I’ve been meaning to ask you, would you still use bone meal if you were using the Neptune’s Crab n Lobster blend? You’ve inspired me to start dahlias this year to plug in and also use in containers. I’ve added earthworm castings, Kelp, lobster crab n alfalfa in the planting holes with a little liquid fish n seaweed very dilute to get them going. Looks like i need to be very careful using that last one regularly. Thanks for all the great dahlia advice. I look forward to trying cuttings. Love your stump collection btw!
I ordered my first dahlias this year after watching your videos. I'm in zone 6a and impatiently waiting for the soil to warm up. I also built my first raised bed (also after watching your video!) and plan to plant them in it. After watching this video, I think I better sprout my dahlias. 😁 I'm so excited! Thank you so much for your encouragement, patient explaining for us newbie dahlia parents, and interesting and educational videos. I've learned so much!
I plant all my dahlia tubers north to south in direction so that I know for the first little while at least, there is no tuber that I can accidentally spear east and west of the plant. I grow aprox. 160 every year, mostly dinnerplates. Your Farm Daddy self watering give away in your next video is perfect for container growing dahlias!
I'm growing a Dahlia from a tuber this year. I grew from seed last year and enjoyed them so much. I do grow them in pots. I just stay on the watering detail regularly. Love all the information on Dahlia growing!

Can you just plant them in any soil? I love dahlias they are beautiful
I potted my dahlia tubers yesterday. I'm not able to plant mine out in my zone 5b until the end of May. Last year I grew the ball type and this year I'm doing the dinner plate. Bonny
Hi Brian, I’ve tried to growing them in pots but not so well. Maybe I’ll take your advise and transplant them in the ground.
Thank you for the great Dahlia videos! I have been growing them for about 5 years and I am still learning.
Thank you for this video! I was considering dahlias this year but had no idea on how to grow them and decided to wait until I did more research. Perfect timing on this video! I will definitely give them a try next year if I don't this year!
Hey Brian, do gophers like Dalia tubers? You didn't put a cage around the inground ones.
First time growing dahlias in my yard. Zone 10A Planting tomorrow and appreciate your easy to follow overview. Thanks!
In south Texas the nights stay too hot to grow dahlias, sadly. They like cool nights and we don’t have those.
Yay the Dahlia video!! 🥳🥳 I was a bit bummed when you said you don't recommend containers cause I rent and can't really plant in the ground. But I'm gonna try and find dwarf sized ones.

Potted up tomatoes today. We’re supposed to get down to 35 this weekend so I’m going to wait to put the rest out. The ones in ground already will have to get covered.
I just found the perfect video. Thank you so much for the tips. I live in some a b in i've been looking and looking thank you

The yellow flowers are Daffodils.
Starting NOW!🙌🏼Great video Thank You!
First time growing Dahlias. I have 3 in the ground and am waiting on my two Cafe Au Lait's to sprout.
Great video. Going to start growing dahlias in containers. Will be a new experience. Blessings ❤️🌺

I would probably take it out and put it in a bigger pot
Unfortunately my Costco Dahlias never sprouted in my trays 😢 . I followed your instructions. I guess they were bad.
I grow dahlia but my favorite are peony.
You had me at "dahlias."
When you were filling the pot, what mix was in the bag? Just a mix of potting soil? Living in Central México now and understand I can grow them year round.
I just bought dahlias from the local nursery and they don’t have tubers, so what is the difference?

Lol good!
I have grew mine in a smallish but long pot with mint I hope it will be okay in 3 or 4 inches of soil.
Your always like an encyclopedia. A world of knowledge. Thank you for your valuable information
Thank you
Dahlia's in Grow bags do very well. Just wanted to pass that info on to you and all of your Viewers.
I can’t seem to get mine to grow dug them up and they look dried out. I tried the tray method to get them to sprout….I was afraid to water them as I heard they don’t need water until they start spouting leaves…. The purple eyes came up but then died
well, crap, I guess I put mine in too early. so far I have only lost one. wish me luck.
Recommendation for how to protect tubers from moles?
I've had the worst luck with Dahlias... thanks for the info.
Starting to grow some Dahlias and this was great info! Let see how it goes ;)
When potting up indoors to get an early start when do you start fertilizing the dahlias?
Can I plant the dahlia tubers during the rain in the ground?
Great video, as always. Thank you!
Thank you!
I an giving it a try this year. Keep my fingers crossed.
What are those labels called that you use on your dahlias please
Would a self wicking planter be a good option? I made one about the size (maybe a bit bigger) you are showing?
Yes

Love dahlias and hope to grow some with success. I stumbled upon your videos and I have learnt a great deal about why my garden doesn’t grow the way I have always dreamed of. Thank you! I have a question, do dahlias do good left in the ground over winter? How do I winterize them?
You're so cool!! (politicians) lol Thank you for the video. My first time growing dahlia's in a pot.
Thank you so much for all the information. I bought a dahlia in mid May and wasn't aware of everything I'm doing wrong. Hopefully, I'll be a pro soon because they are my favorite flower.
How many much spaces does a full dhalia tuber need? I guess depending on variety but I’m trying 65 gallons for my first run.
My daughter loves dahlias but would have to keep them inside or on her porch. She lives in very cold climate. Would you recommend growing dahlias for her?
As long as she has 3 or 4 mo of non freezing weather. And she'll have to dig them and store inside for winter
Hi Brian
Have a tuber my neighbor gave me pretty purple sunflower petals.
Stop watering
I started dahlias indoors this year. I started them early and now my dahlias are 1 ft. Tall and leggy. What should I do at this point. The temperature is good for planting them up now but do I cut them back? How do I do that? I was very successful at getting them to sprout but now I’m not sure what to do.
Pinch the top out After 3 sets of Leaves
I grow mine in pots because of gophers. I have one very large one that I did put in the ground with a gopher cage around it. Luckily I live near the coast in N.California and we rarely get over 70° so watering is not a problem.
Just received my "gardeners supply " auto hydration trays, eager to get some seeds in them.
Thanks for the TIP
Awesome!
Hi! I’m a newbie. Thank you for your informative and helpful video.
