12 Days in a Controversial Cabin With a Blocked View

- How much is a good view from a cabin worth? I put it to the test by booking an 'obstructed view' cabin with no idea about what would be obstructing it or how much.
I’m currently on a cruise and I’m staying in a balcony cabin that has a quirky downside that I’ve never had on a cruise ship before.
The cruise lines don’t advertise cabins like these and most people have no idea that they exist. I found this cabin almost by accident and booked it because of the discount price.
Like quirky cabins? Check out these from my controversial cabin series:
This cabin faces INSIDE the ship: • 7 Days In a Controvers...
This cabin faces backwards: • I Cruised in a Cabin T...
This bathroom has a glass wall! • Nowhere to Hide: I Sta...
This cruise has taken us from Singapore to Tokyo and for me it has been a real bucket list adventure, like most bucket list things though it hasn’t been cheap and when booking I knew that the flights from the uk would likely cost more than the cruise itself.
With that in mind, I really didn’t want to spend more than I had to on the cabin but I also didn’t want to miss out on anything as I’d come half way around the world for this trip. I didn’t want to book an inside cabin and miss out on seeing something incredible, but also didn’t want to pay full price for a balcony which was almost double the inside cabin price. This was already the most expensive trip I’d ever planned.
I decided to compromise and try something new. I booked what is called an obstructed view cabin and I really hoped that I wouldn’t regret it.
There have been both negatives and positives that I hadn’t considered before the cruise, even though I thought I was well prepared.
To save a little more money I booked what is called a guaranteed cabin, that meant that I didn’t pick my specific location and could be given a cabin anywhere on the ship and most importantly for me, with any level of obstruction. I could have a tiny thing obstructing the bottom corner of my view. Or I could be facing a lifeboat head on, with no view of the ocean at all.
The lifeboats usually are a lovely colour but that didn’t mean that I wanted to stare at one for 12 days.
A couple of months before the cruise my cabin was assigned, when the email popped up I was excited, but a little nervous, I hoped that I’d made the right decision.

Got the E-Mail and ordered mine a couple days ago.
Thank you! 😁❤️
You didn't fly Scoot, did you?! If so, how did you find it?
Mine is ordered too. We have been awaiting the email and ordered immediately!
I think using the lifeboats as tenders is a SUPER idea!!! ... When an emergency arises, the crew would be SO comfortable with getting everyone to safety as they use them fairly regularly. GREAT idea financially too, those things must be worth a fortune! .. Great multi-use feature!
Yesssss, so true! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I mean the counterpoint is that if there is an emergency on the cruise ship at that point then half the lifeboats aren't on the boat
@@connor1586 Half the people aren't on the boat either so they don't need as many. And I imagine they will be in communication with the ship and could come back to help if needed.
@@connor1586As someone else commented, there would be a reduced need, since passengers have used those lifeboats to get to shore. The other good thing, is that the ship is not underway, and is not too far out to sea. If there was an emergency, the remaining lifeboats should suffice ... and boats from shore should be able to get their fairly quickly to add in the evacuation.
All very valid points!
''Captain Hudson was recognized and it was decided ne needed some friends'' that is so awesome ahahah. Love the review !
So bonkers isn't it? That cat has the best life! ha ha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Hi Emma, Just want to say I enjoy your videos. I'm a travel agent in the US, and getting first hand looks and opinions that aren't shined up by the cruiselines is invaluable! The subtleties like what the viewing area in a theater is like, what options there are on the menus, how much motion is felt on board... All helpful. I have absolutely applied these to how I book and hopefully that's had a positive impact on people's vacations. Keep it up and hope to see more ships!
I don 't find this cabin bad. It is at a discount price - I would definitely take it.
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
if ship goes down you have front seat to safety 😁
Hope I don't need it 😳
Not me. The cost to move up a deck was pretty small per day. To get a better view and a move away from club noise would have been well worth it. But that's just me.
All those towel animals made me smile. I assume you did also when you saw them. Having the lifeboat there really doesn't seem like a major issue. It actually gave more privacy when seated out there. I'd have been more bothered by the bass thump from the club below
A good idea for balconies in cabins like this would be high seats with a tray attached, like an adapted lifeguard seat. Guests could sit with a drink & enjoy a better view.
I am just going to say it otherwise it will bug me. the "white metal parts" as you called them are called Davits. more specifically Gravity davits/ Gravity Multi pivot davits which are industry standard/Most common on cruise ships. Lifeboats used as Tenders is more common than people realise.I was trained to release, Prep etc a lifeboat but never really had to do it even for Tender ports.
Omg yes, thanks for this!
I was gonna say that
So glad you posted that. I was shouting "davits" at my telly.
@jameswg13 LOL hadn't read through to your post, but Emma's description just ground my gears somehow (only mildy mind) so I put a comment in too before I'd watched all the video.
I recently had surgery and discovered your channel during recovery. Thanks for taking me on so many adventures! Your content was a bright spot.
Thanks so much 🥹❤️ I hope you are on the mend!!
Hope you’re recovering well!
I don't know why I started watching your videos, but I am glad I did. Your videos are very soothing. Thank you for sharing these. ❤😊
Great video Emma! Love the way you present info - super clear and a very honest take. Well done!
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
Thank you Emma. I’m going on this ship in two weeks time. I’m travelling solo in a Studio Balcony room with obstructed view. It’s a four night cruise from Singapore to Penang and Phuket. I’m aware that the view could be good, to quite obstructed, but the price was very affordable and being on my own, I don’t think I’ll be in my room a great deal except for sleeping. Also, due to it being the tropics, I’m sure I won’t be sitting on the balcony alone for extended periods. The ship is huge, which is a first for me, and I’ll be busy doing many other things than worrying about the view. It is way more preferable to me to see the sky from my bed. So, Thankyou again…love your videos and adventures! Warm regards from Perth Western Australia 🇦🇺
Ive been on that cruise
Only started watching your content a few weeks ago and now have pretty much caught up with everything already 😁 Now I am thinking about planning my first ever cruise as well! Thanks for the inspiration ☺
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
What an amazing cruise! I had an obstructed balcony cabin on a past cruise & it was just a bit more than interior, so worth it. Your cabin was actually super nice!
I love your videos!! I took my first cruise last summer and loved it! Your videos make me think of that happy time
The metal parts that raise and lower the lifeboats are called "davits". 🙂
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Yay! The Spectrum reviews are here! So much to look forward to! Thx for the tips Emma!
Thank you! 😁❤️ Two more videos to come!
Hi emma I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE your content. You are the reason that I love cruising. Also you're editing and way of making video's that are so amazing.
Emma, I'm new to your videos since I just started getting interested in taking a cruise. And being from the U.S. I'm still trying to get used to your British accent. But it's become clear to me that your videos are very interesting and informative, and I like your style. You're so cute with how much you love Captain Hudson! Haha. I'm learning more and more from you, and I hope you have some tips and tricks videos to prepare me for what I need to do to book and enjoy a cruise. I'm becoming a fan and just subscribed! Thank you for the work you put into this for everyone watching!
Hi Emma, Im currently in Yucatan Mexico and the heat & humidity has been insane. Dripping w sweat just standing still - it was 47 C w humidex today. Even linen feels too heavy to wear. So i totally understand what you mean. Your cabin looked great and Im happy you got to do a bucket list cruise 😊
Yes!!! I understand bleh. Hope you’re enjoying ❤️❤️
Ive been watchin your videos a lot even tho Ive never cruised, I really like em, theyre very easy to watch! Would love to do something similar as far as travel videos go, Im very inspired! Thanks Emma!
when I first found your channel, I was thinking, cruising is not my thing, but I love these videos because ships fascinate me. Now I find myself thinking “when I go on a cruise…”😂
Ha ha! Thank you! 😁❤️
We selected an obstructed view cabin for our June Alaska cruise, 4th floor, because the balconies are so expensive. Hopefully we have a view similar to what you experienced! Thanks for sharing 🛳️🛳️
That was a great review. Thank you. And what a fantastic bucket list trip.
That's the cutest sweetest detail ever! They certainly made sure Captain Hudson wouldn't get lonely while you were way.
They did!! He has the best life. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Thank you! I only booked an obstructed view once and had the full on lifeboat in my face for the entire cruise. I am now at a point in my cruising that I want smaller ships, interesting itineraries and a regular balcony. Thanks for the itinerary idea, it’s a good one…
Sounds good to me! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
OMG! Mind blowing crusie line inside and out and so gorgeous and the design is wonderful 👻🍁🍁👻❤️🍃❤️💛❤️🍃🛳️🍂🛳️🍃🎃🍁
Emma ... always fun, entertaining, and informative to watch your "adventures at sea"! Good shout! [Greetings from Tucson]
Thank you! 😁❤️
Greetings from a fan from Singapore! Glad you popped by on route to Japan!
Thanks for this video. I’ve also wondered about theses cabins.
Woohoo - delighted to see content from this cruise appearing! Totally agree that an inside cabin would be a waste on this trip, but it sounds like you did a good job with this one! 👏🏼
You could make it work 😅🤣❤️
Emma!!! wow, very informative ans as always so fun...
That looked like a great cruise. Are you doing more content on the trip, excursions, food, etc? Love your videos girl and your hair looks fabulous! Grows out so pretty ❤
Yesss, next video about the destinations then one about the ship. Thanks you! 🥳❤️
Welcome to Singapore! I’m heading on a shorter cruise on the exact same ship tomorrow!
Love your vids Emma! Always had a view in the past, so don’t think I could take obstructed view; just me though. Ship is so large it looks like Parliament on the Thames!!
I love, love, love your channel. You've replaced Emmerdale as my favourite thing to watch on television! I now cast it from my tablet to a tv and it's as if I am watching something just as professional! TY for sharing your content and I learn so much from you and I listen carefully too!! Keep up the good work and I've subscribed x 😀🛳🛳🛳🚢⛵🚤🛥
Awwhh hahaha! I was always a Corrie watcher so I watched emmerdale half the time waiting for it, had to give it up though I couldn’t keep up. Thanks so much for watching and your kind words! I appreciate it 😀❤️
@@EmmaCruises Keep up the amazing content. I know you work hard in preparing these posts!
Seemed a good sized cabin and worth the reduced fare compared to being one deck up. Love how organised you are with your travel wash 👍
Just got off the sister ship to this one (Ovation of the Seas) for an Alaskan Cruise. We were in a guaranteed balcony and were given the 7th floor also listed as obstructed. I remember wondering if the people the floor below us paid the same price. We had a mostly clear view but the lifeboats were still present in most of the pictures we took from the balcony. But definitely worth the price we paid 😄
Awesome video!!! happy Travels!!
Thank you! 😁❤
Those stormy skies about the city shots were stunning.
So dramatic!! Was so warm still. ❤️
An obstructed view is better than no view at all.
So true!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Each to their own, but if I had to stand to see the view and all I could see while sitting relaxing is a lifeboat I'd rather have no view at all
The logic that anything is okay because anything can be worse is flawed. And tbh a very weak mindset.
@@Kai...999 Hardly. An obstructed view can tell me: time of day, weather, location, items of interest, and direction of travel. An inside cabin blocks all of that.
Wonderful,Iv only been on one cruise I hope I get to do another. From watching your videos thank you.
Thank you! 😁❤
Captain Hudson's friends are all so cute! So funny he was recognized. I love it.
Soooo cute! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I love how Emma, make budget cruise seem classy, just by showing up! :)
Ha ha!! Thank you! 😁❤
Great video Emma but that cabin would be awful for me! Love the towel creations 🤣
Ha ha. Fair enough 😀❤ Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Absolutely amazing review Emma love it! Xoxo 😘 🍁🍃🎃👻🛳️
The most interesting tidbit for me: You used the tap to make Squash?!? That's amazing. For some reason, I thought the water was like water on an airplane...No go for drinking.
I think the obstructed view would be ok for someone who cruises a lot or whose first priority is saving money. For 150£, I'd probably upgrade. However with that heat and humididty, maybe not(how much time wpuld I spend out there?). Great video, super informative, as always❤.
God forbid anything happens you’ll be first in the queue for the lifeboat
😂😂😂
You looked so lovely in that maroon outfit! Thanks for the vid always enjoy them.
Love it, cruises sound like a great adventure. It would be good to go to sea again, I miss that! Like I said I would want to be on a British, Italian or French flagged ship. Can't afford it right now but I always like planning trips I would do were I able to afford them 🙂
❤️❤️❤️
Great video! That cabin wasn’t too bad but I prefer to choose my own cabin as long as there are cabins above and below me. All the towel cats were so cute! I’m a cat person and always enjoy seeing Hudson in your videos. The itinerary looked interesting but that humidity in Vietnam looked horrible! Can’t wait to see where you’re going next.
Thank you! 😁❤️
The room looks exactly the same as Quantum of The Seas. We went on an Alaskan cruise in September. Our balcony room on deck 7 was perfect with no obstructed view and no noise.
I have stayed in obstructed view cabins. They are great to be able to get fresh air and a balcony. You only have to go up a floor to get on deck and a full view! For anyone who is a nervous traveller (nervous of high seas or sea sickness) I also think having the life boat between your cabin and the view is oddly comforting. I likes not having a clear view strangely enough. It's certainly better than a indoor or window cabin.
As usual, great video! Thank you for sharing! I'm curious what microphone you're using. I don't see anything clipped to your shirt but your voice is so clear.
This was my iPhone, I forgot my regular microphone 😂
The towel friends are so clever, loved them. Pity you couldn’t take them all home.
Thanks for posting
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Capt. Hudson had an entourage! How cute! 😄😍
He’s a superstar! 😂
Has to be a little thrill when Captain Hudson is recognised :)
Soooo cool!! That cat has done amazing things. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
To do Singapore to Toyko I would totally accept this cabin.
I see you are joining Arvia today sorry I am not working in Southampton today. Would love to say hello. Have a great time on Arvia. Many crew friends onboard will look after you
you are so pretty OMG everything look good on you even the yellow boat , amazing videos as always
Hahah. Thank you! 😁❤️

So I booked a cruise with NCL next October, and I'm in a solo cabin. Have you ever stayed in one of those? And if so, what did you think of it?
Also, as always, love your videos. I hope you had a great time.
Hi Emma, I live in the Midlands but have never heard someone say good shout lol
Love your videos Emma.
Thank you! 😁❤️
I always travel with ear plugs, just in case. Thank you for the video!
Hey Emma !! Another great video !!! Video !!!! I'm getting old ! Have you tried chips and salad cream yet ??
Nope I haven't!! ha ha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Whoa there is a shot about 3 minutes into this video that shows the fans in the disembarking area doing some funky stuff to the camera 😀
Cool isn’t it?? Haha 😂😂😂
OMG! Love your content!
You are the best RUclipsr ever
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
How did the author meeting go@@EmmaCruises
Hi Emma, great review as always .....
FYI: sound wobbly in some places?!!! 😐
Hey hey!!
forgot my microphone but didn't want to miss out on recording this video onboard. So this is from my phone. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
My rule for long distance travel is to force yourself to immediately adapt to the new timezone. Stay up to your normal bedtime, get up to your normal alarm, and eat meals at normal time. Sunshine and exercise also help.
8:50 Hi Emma, we were onboard the very same sailing (as well as the next immediate cruise back to Singapore). The sailaway farewell Kumamoto drone and firework show by locals was a pleasant surprise, in addition to the arrival welcome drum show earlier in the day with their "captain uniform"-kumamon man-in-a-mascot-suit. We watched it from our portside facing balcony stateroom at Deck 8. The folks at the various Japanese ports were really friendly with their welcomes and farewells, do you get that from other ports from your other cruises? Hope you also enjoyed Singapore!
Nope not usually! Hope you enjoyed the trip I have two more videos from it coming 😀❤️
I reckon if it's for the Asian market, the kettles are there because instant noodles are a popular snack/anytime meal for people. I don't cruise but my aunts who do have complained whenever there ISN'T a kettle in their cabin.
😂😂😂
You look wonderful in all your cruise outfits !
another winner video!
Thank you! 😁❤️
I am so disappointed that Captain Hudson’s room is a sock drawer! He deserves the big giant comfy bed!😀
Hello Emma! I was on this exact same cruise and had the same cabin :-) It was my first time to go on a cruise with my family and we enjoyed it. As an expert cruiser, how would you rate your overall experience during this trip? Thanks
The metal structures holding the lifeboats are called davits. I spotted some M&S bourbons in the drawer - naughty!
and Custard Creams!! ;)
I have no interest in going on a cruise but I can't pass up on your videos when I see a new one haha
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Same here...but never say never I guess?
I honestly do not know how people live in extremely humid places
The life boat is gone! Wakes up she’s the only one left on the ship and has to figure out why!
That sounds like a cool horror film actually
Ive done Spectrum of the seas... was in Room 6192... same side!
I get mostly casino cruises with free interior stateroom . I always upgrade to obstructed balcony for less than 200 dollars extra for 2. Never had a problem always able to see above lifeboats.
Very nice! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
The metal objects that raise/lower boats are called davits (USN pron DAH-vits, British pron may differ).
5:23 "White metal parts that lower the life boats up (?) and down". @EmmaCruises They're correct nautical name is Davits. I'm not a cruiser, having only been on one but love your channel for all the advice and critique you offer.
Haven’t heard “Good shout” yet, but we say, “Good call” meaning pretty much the same thing. 👍🏼
Yeah kinda! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Hudson ❤ never seen so many towel animals in our lives! 🤪
That "mystery step" in the shower I believe is used for face cloths to be wrapped around to air dry. My shower at home has something similar, albeit higher in the shower itself (probably as its a shower + tub)
I thought it was to put your foot on when shaving your legs... 😮
@@crob3659 that's probably what it's actually for lmao
Or maybe both? :D
I think it has many uses! ha ha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
It is for shaving your legs.
Great video. I found the audio a little "digital" in this video, not sure if that is youtube encoding for me.
Hellooo, I forgot my microphone but didn't want to miss out on recording this video onboard. So this is from my phone. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I wouldn't have wanted an obstructed view at all. It's worth the money to have a room where there are no lifeboats in view at all.
The white metal arms that lower the lifeboats are called davits. I learned that term from watching 1997 titanic film. Architect/engineer/designer Andrews explained the lifeboat situation to Rose. It was foreshadowing.
I really like the red-colored dress with the drapey sheer sleeves. ❤️
Thank you! 😁❤️ I feel like a fish with it 🤣🤣
I've never heard 'good shout 'before but I have heard a similar one used in pubs 'it's your shout 'which means your round.Good shout sounds like something an Australian might say.
Ooo, I've not heard that one!!
Good shout, is not an Australianism! (Crikey that sounds weird) @@EmmaCruises
WIll there be a full cruise video too? I'd love to see the Spectrum inside and all her facilities.
Yesss, port video coming next then the ship video 😀🥳❤️
We’ve jumped from Royal and trying MSC, Princess and Oceania. Royal seems far too expensive now. We’re Diamond plus too.
I was looking forward to Capt Hudson v3, but I missed out because it wasn't mentioned in this video. I usually watch RUclips on an app on my TV that does not display comments, so I didn't get the word in time. Bummer.
Did an obstructed cabin on Carnival , it was pretty good. Still got a view .
Sounds good! 😁🥳
My wife and I have never cared about the cabin view. We have been hit with cabins that are noisy and one that was smelly. As long as the bath is sufficient, the beds are comfy, and there's room for our luggage, we check the good to go box. This includes inside rooms. It's not that we don't appreciate a balcony, it just doesn't appreciably change our vacation satisfaction. Maybe as we get older that will change
What is it about soft-close drawers that makes us so happy? Maybe it's an unconscious stress we feel from the slamming of non-soft-close that were just so used to we never even notice it, but when we are missing it we become elated? 😁
Can you make a video about the cruise experience/ and the perts
Well done
Thank you! 😁❤️
Great info, but anywhere in Asia during the summer is something I will never do
