25c3: Console Hacking 2008: Wii Fail

Is implementation the enemy of design?
The Nintendo Wii game console has been one of the most popular of all time, selling almost as many units as all of its competitors combined. Despite being cheaper than the PS3 and Xbox360, it contains a sophisticated security architecture that withstood over a year of concerted effort to hack the device. The design itself is impressive; unfortunately, flaws in the implementation (both subtle and severe) render the device easily hacked, with little chance of recovery.
24C3 saw the first public demonstration of unsigned code running on the Wii. A year later, we will present full details of that attack and share the results of another full year of research. We will show the bugs that have been found, the reasons they may have existed, and what attempts the vendor has made to fix them.
Gamers will probably find this talk interesting, but it will be most valuable for anyone who hacks on (or designs) embedded systems. Basic knowledge of crypto is assumed. We will have an area set up in the Hackcenter for those who want to learn more about this subject, before or after the presentation.

True inspiration to the Wiibrew community :'(
RIP bushing :(
What happened?
omma911 "natural causes" wut
Goddamnit why do bad things happen to good people?
@@qwertykeyboard5901 because that's how life works :)
Warrior for knowledge.
I bow.
RIP Bushing
A real inspiration to us all, taken long before his time :’(
Rest in Peace Bushing.
A true classic! RIP Bushing!
o wait thats bushing. bushing meyer. oh he was that guy we all pay our respects too!
Sadly, no companies will do what the guy at the end about allowing homebrew and not piracy.
Sony's removal of Linux is a good example of this. Companies are about full control.
Honestly, the closest is the Microsoft dev support
@@TylerFurrison well not anymore
@@pitust Yeah I'm well aware of my comment aging like milk
@@pitust wait what happened
Well yeah cause like the question at the end. They sell the hardware at a loss and make money on the games. Hacks allow piracy eventually, always… can’t get around that. And the purpose of a company is to provide a product and make money to survive and continue producing products…. Otherwise there’s no point. Nothing is free.
Rest in peace bushing... :(
Bushing: the Wii outputted a crappy 480p
The video: 480p
The console handles things locally, while the video had to be easy to store online and downloadable by people with not so great connection speeds.
RIP
RIP Bushing.
"I don't think we can dump it" proceeds to find an exploit, and present it for the Wii U 5 years later
theres a wii u c3 ? i cannot find one
@@LiEnbyno, they made homebrew channel for Wii U as well, for vWii i think, the people who made a Wii U version are probably different people.
Really incredible work from those people.
i love marcan fighting with bushing to press the right #$%£ing button 🤣
Idk half of what they’re saying, (know some) but I fully agree.
RIP Bushing, his homebrew advancements will never be forgotten.
Dont feel bad. Ive studied assembler hacking for years and i only understood 70%.lol
I still feel dumb when i see nvidia presentations on 3d math. :( ;)
They manage to hack a console made by a multi billion company but can’t handle a Firefox update notification lol
5 years ago today. Rest in peace dude.
If they just allowed you to run homebrew software then they wouldn't make money off companies paying them to make games for the system..
But they could then sue pirates into oblivion while sparing people who use homebrew tech for non-illegal purposes.
marcan has a really high speach speed^^ Can't follow many times he speaks :P
They're nothing but the key to Homebrew.
RIP bushing
is there any way you can add subtitles or close captioning to the video. hard of hearing.
onelife151 In 2018 you can add subtitles but the auto substile is very go
@realrealblades yeah i saw that. its a real pain in the ass. I really wish they would fix that.
i cant believe i watched this whole thing
29:44 I really wonder why they used string comparing function. They clearly didn't realize side-effect of using string comparison for data that can potentially contain zero in the middle, but why strncmp...?
My guess is that either they thought either memcmp or strncmp would work just fine, or it has some kind of custom libc and it lacked memcmp function. But if latter was the case, it wouldn't take more than 10 minutes to write basic memcmp function. It's nothing more than laziness.
maybe they thought that the hash returned would be a hex string not binary data??
@@LiEnby I think they would've used with strcmp instead of strncmp if they thought it was string, but that is definitely possibility.
So rude the people leaving loud.

Those guy's are so smart, you can't defend yourself from hackers they will always win at the end.
Nintendo probably spent so much money to protect from them but they finally manage to outsmart them.

Is IOS an official name or a Team Twiizers name?
It's an official name.
wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS
IOS, not to be confused with iOS ;)
I hope Wii, Sony, and Micro$haft all fail, and some open source console becomes king!
Consoles are closed source to prevent piracy. It's not that difficult.
