Thank you for sharing this song! It has really encouraged me to keep on responding to God's calling and leading in my life. I take the language/terminology of "spirit of David" to be similar to that used in 2 Kings 2:9, 15 and Luke 1:17 where it speaks of the "spirit of Elijah." It's a kind of short-hand... a poetic way of mentioning and referencing, in only a few words, some of the most powerful and significant ways in which the Holy Spirit manifested Himself in and through the life of the person named (whether Elijah or David). The glory always remains God's, regardless of whomever He graciously chooses to involve in His good purposes!

We agree with you! David was "A man after God's own heart." We desire to be men and women after God's own heart as well! David's strength and boldness came from the Holy Spirit, not his own. We want to emulate his example, being filled with strength and boldness through the Holy Spirit, just like David was!
I don't think it's necessary a Spirit they're talking about. But a 'spirit' like a spirit of worship or spirit of joy.. I understand where you're coming from. But I dont think they're using the term in the sense that you may be perceiving it to be.
