The main thing that makes the Sniper gun skin feels way too big is the barrel of the gun, which is almost at the center of the screen, is way bigger, like I will feel fine if the other parts of the gun is big because they are on the edge of the screen.
That is indeed an interesting observation. Perhaps the calculations can be redone where a weighting factor is applied, according to the distance from the center of the screen. I'm not sure how much difference between the mininum value and maximum value should be to make it feel natural. Another way to look at this, if we take the approach of the video, could be to draw a white circle on the center of the screen, with a diameter equal to the screen height. Then perform a intersect operation so only the area is left over which falls both within the circle and the gun image. At least I would assume that that area is the most important.
I have been BEGGING for client side view model customization. Like you said, in older games, it was a thing. You could even just simply change the X, Y, and Z. Characters with massive guns like Zarya for example are a genuine burden, I have actually missed information like a crouching enemy or Junkrat trap on the floor solely because a bigass particle cannon is in my way. I don't think it would be the most difficult update to make, depending on how Blizz has done all the models as its common practice to only animate the minimum amount you actually see and I don't honestly think most players would even use it as a feature. But man, for those of us that do care, it would be one of the best updates in 8 years.
You should do this with more heros, I'd be down to get a look into the competitive edge of skins, especially scoped in, like Ashe and Ana. Also might be worth talking about how the visual clutter of a skin, not just the size, makes a difference (such as the scope cover hanging off of her Sniper skin, and any other moving bits of a model)
Agree'd, the biggest thing for me was the hanging bits, and the bloom/glow. I should've mentioned that. I'll looks into the scopes to see what I can find, thanks for the suggestion.
This makes me wonder about which heroes have generally the best/worst visual clarity, which heroes have the most variance between skins (to find the statistically worst or best skins in the game), etc. Just as a guess, i kiss think Reinhardt has the worst visibility and mercy with pistol is best
Would have loved to see the black and white comparison for the highest and lowest ends of the spectrum! showing them side by side or one after the other would have been nice
i think in this case the best skin to "avoid noticing the weapon" will always be the one with the longest and thinnest barrel, as the barrel itself is usually what you see and what can in the most part hinder you since its closer to the center of the screen, the rest of the gun might make you feel lighter or more agile (happens to me for example) but in the end the barrel is what can mostly get in the way of target aquisition imo
Forgot to say that even if i feel slightly worse using a sniper that makes me feel heavy while using it, honestly my gun looks cool af and that's still better.
I think you should do this for the other characters too. Like for Rein, I think the least visually occupying weapon skin for him is most of the bladed weapons (axe, spear, etc).
@@lennywhere they are referring to how in apex, some legendary weapon skins change the base look of the gun, so you can have better iron sights because of the skin you have equipped vs the default. It does give you an advantage, you can see more of your surroundings while ads.
@@clichechad6623 his gun is sorta inside a sportsbag with baseball bats sticking out of the sides and it's massive/takes up a ton of space on the screen. Now that I think of about it the gargoyle skin also has a really massive weapon. Gets really noticeable when you compare those 2 skins to e.g. flying ace which has a really thin weapon
This might be why I subconsciously gravitated towards captain amari, mummy, & bastet being the 3 smallest guns. That and because they dont look like ana 😅
Great to have a video that gets to the point and do not waste 2 hours with an intro, sponsor, and 2000 random discussion that has nothing to do with the topic.
I remember back when Cassidy's beach skin just got released, his gun was much bigger than it is now. It's a shame, because the big gun was half the reason I bought the skin, it looked super cool. At least I SWEAR this is true, but evidence is hard to find...
unless the weapon covers 2x more space than the original (and the only case I've found is Kaiju Roadhog, but the skin and weapon are too good for me to take it off), idgaf about the screen space. also, not including every skin cuz you dont wanna pay $20 for a statistical video like this is really fucking petty.
You could make this a series for potentially all the characters
id love to see the difference between illaris base gun and pajama gun. Pajama feels massive compared to base
I’d really enjoy if he did do this with all skins.
@@ThePanPanda11 Nah, it's not really much bigger, if at all.
@e.b.9702 when I first got the skin, it felt massive and distracting so I stopped using it
for some it wouldnt make a difference i think. like echo, lifeweaver, kiriko
Fantastic video. Short, well written, Nice commentary and straight to the point. Well done.
Captain Amari is my favorite skin. so, a win in my book!

Digging this type of video format. Would love to watch more
amazing video, the editing is insane, and the way u calculated the porcentaje of screen usage was really clever.

Underrated ASF!, keep up the work dude!
So just for clarification sake. That difference is the percentage of screen difference. The Sniper gun is 38% larger than the Captain skin
This makes me wonder about which heroes have generally the best/worst visual clarity, which heroes have the most variance between skins (to find the statistically worst or best skins in the game), etc. Just as a guess, i kiss think Reinhardt has the worst visibility and mercy with pistol is best
The skins only have a psychological effect. Pick one you like for best results.

Yeah, I don't know what I didn't think of that. If I do another one of these, I'll be sure to include that.
@@POTGMACHINE No worries at all! it’s still a very well done and informative video and I appreciate the effort that went into it 🖤🤍
Do this with Hog’s skins. Some of his weapons are really huge
I may look into doing other heroes if I can coordinate getting screenshots for the skins.
@@POTGMACHINE Sadly, I don't have any ow2 skins🤭

This is a big thing in Apex with ironsights specifically
it is literally a "big" thing, since you scope in with it and therefore takes up 3x more pixels than without the weapon in your face
@@lennywhere they are referring to how in apex, some legendary weapon skins change the base look of the gun, so you can have better iron sights because of the skin you have equipped vs the default. It does give you an advantage, you can see more of your surroundings while ads.
The infamous flatline skin was the worst case for these pay2win skins in apex to the point every other skin sold poorly due to visual clarity
I'd love to see this for reinhardt. His default weapon takes up so much of the screen, I wonder if any of his skins take up significantly less.
great video! you should do this with other Heroes too. Some skins are unironically pay2lose like winstons football skin or Mercy's royal knight
What's so bad about the football skin? (I don't have it)

Easy sub. Great content!
Mercy and kiri will get a second mythic skin before characters like lifeweaver or venture
It always felt like I was winning more easily when using the captain amari skin, so this feels right
Great video! Earned my sub, excited to see what else you cook up in the future
Hang on he’s cooking
could do this for ashe! all of her skins have different ads and it is very noticeable, i wonder which one is the best
wtaf, what i learned from this was mythic ana has mecha beach ball

"it's normally bigger than this I swear"
I actually felt the opposite about ana's sniper skin, I always felt like the gun was smaller
Regret not getting botanist or whatever that one Bp skin was. In hindsight it’s pretty clean
Dont care if the sniper skin is competitively worse because it has the funny little scope cap that i can move around that distracts me. 10/10 skin
I thought this was going to be a comparison for who you should alt
Great video, well paced and good commentary
Idk why the Ana sniper skin makes me aim better than my cabana skin
Jokes on you, I use Captain Amari regardless.
yeah but the cool factor. i hit like 20% more shots on the sniper skin cuz the gun looks cooler. dont ask me why i have no idea but it happens lol
Agree'd
Can you please use this method to get an exact % of the screen torbs reload animation takes up that thing is MASSIVE
I hope you would do more of the roster
This channel deserves much more subscribers. I'm up
i always knew that Captain amari was the best ana skin
Fire vid, it’s sad you only have 250 subs
Why did you tell me! I lived in peace for my entire Overwatch career now my 2 favorite skins are the worse xD
this needs more love
I'm using the Philly fusions away skin (honoring Alarm), did u take that into consideration?
recolour of the ow1 ana skin
i Fucking knew it but i thought i was crazy until i saw this video

do this with zarya! her gun is way too big
