Coolness : 100%
Durability : 5%
Use green wood for the handle for 10% extra durability.
Add pine pitch to the handle portion that goes inside the hammer head. Once it hardens it’ll hold twice if not three to four times longer.
Coolness: 100%
Durability: 20%
@@fanofmetal1You should actually use dried wood for the handle and green for the head. As the wood shrinks, a green handle would become loose due to the shrinkage over time. If the handle is dried, it will remain the same size and the green head will shrink onto it, further tightening the bond. We do this all the time for camp tools and it works perfectly.
I've had mine for about a year and I've beat the shit out of it. The only problem I've had was getting the eyelet stuck. Honestly would recommend getting one.
@@Arcahnslight Great tip!

Lol
To make a wooden hammer all you need is this wide assortment of tools that should probably include a hammer with it initially
This.
I mean, the auger, being steel, would make a fine hammer.
@@Oogadoog no weight
That’s EXACTLY what I was about to say.
It’s a cool little trick, but would you ever need it?
Yeah, the wooden hammer would be useful for other things that the regular hammer you carried wouldn't be great for, especially processing food that requires hard shell cracking. It being wood makes it soft so it doesn't bust the food and cause it to get shot away at high speeds.
That's a mallet
You said it, so I don’t have to. Thanks.
That's it, I'm gettin me mallet!
Yes
@@TravisEXUltimaAlright. Calm down, Eustace 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Was gonna say this
Pro tip: If you make your wedge from the same stick as the handle you get a wedge the same width as the handle
Thanks for the awesome tip! 🤝🏼🤝🏼
Word.
And it should be a slower taper. You snapped the handle as you hammered in the wedge.
The other piece of advice would be to use a thicker handle, and either make it from drier wood, or dry it using a fire.
Technically that's a mallet 🤣
Wich technically is a type of hammer
@@dabois8280 which technically is a type of tool
@@seanm241 Which technically will break with one decent swing and then all you will have is a stick. Still handy when it dries out for a fire.
So do I hammer with my mallet?
Or do I mallet with my mallet?
Mallet is a kind of hammer
So
If i got an auger, saw, and knife why do i need a wooden hammer? Why would i bring an auger before a hammer or axe?
weight
The three tools combined weigh less than a hammer or axe, and take up less space. Tbh I'd always bring an axe if I was planning to do any bushcraft, but if you're optimizing for a small, light pack it might make sense.
@WungusBill-lf4iu so when your optimizing your pack, you think an AUGER is better weight management than an AXE????
Yeah, I may need to build a table while hiking.
@@majinjason
Like I said, I personally bring an axe if I'm planning on doing any bushcraft. I also don't really mind the weight of my pack too closely as I'm rarely doing more than a day's hike, and I'm never building anything elaborate enough that I have the need to bore holes. Other people have different needs.
@WungusBill-lf4iu honestly, an axe is a bit much for survival or hiking for me. A hatchet/hammer is always welcome.
The idea of making a hammer for survival seems a bit silly in general. Any good sized branch is a fantastic hammer as is. If the hatchet needs more force you can beat on the hammer face with a branch and split good sized logs.
But I know guys that pack all of that into just their knife. It's a saw, knife, hatchet, and hammer. I've never been much on those survival knives though, a simple 20 dollar pocket knife is good for me. The hatchet can do everything else. Plus the picket knife has 3 or more blades for all sorts, skinning, cutting, whittling whatever.
bro remembered he had rent due.
He carried every possible tool in warehouse except hammer 😂
If you proportion this better (narrower head and/or thicker handle), it is best to turn the wedge 90 degrees to what is shown. The gripping force inside the hole should be in the same direction as the grain to avoid splitting.
Great technique but just.not sure abt the proportions or handle to head ratio
I think he’s teaching a technique, not selling that hammer lol
Think about Mjolnir.
All you need is an auger bit, a saw, a knife, make a handle for the auger bit and hammer handle. Something to pound the wedge in (like a hammer) and you have a hammer. Got a used estwing in '86. Still works like a champ.
I think the takeaway here is that if you add an auger bit to the knife and saw you’ve already got in your kit, you can generate numerous other useful items on site. For example, a hammer.
@@chrissaffran7655hit the nail on the head bro, some folk are just ignorant
If yoy are careful you can cut the notch deeper before you put it in. Then you get a deeper wedge contact.
I've built these for metal forging. I still have the ones I made over 20 years ago. The trick is to use metal pipe straps around the mallet head, and keep tightening them as the wood dries. That way the wood won't eventually check and split. The type of wood that's used also makes a huge difference. Ash wood works great, btw.
Great advice👍
I use either a small hatchet or a medium tomahawk, both with hammer back ends. Then, you still have a hatchet or a tomahawk.
To make it look a lil cooler you could also make it a cube by chopping the bark sides off
To make it look EVEN cooler, you can carve a wooden duck out of the head.
Mallard Mallet
Yep just use a chisel and a hammer 😅
Chop saw or table saw is easier .

I was being snarky too. Maybe not quite so clearly though. I did see the answer above your question so …
The stick he used to drive in the wedge was the real hammer 🤯
it was a handle you dunce
I can just hear a Viking man yelling HAMMAAARRRR
Pardon me for interjecting something. The fact is that on that specific type of auger that has a tapered collar, the collar is supposed to reduce the diameter of a piece of wood so that you have a peg that perfectly fits the hole. If you had gotten a thicker piece of wood I think it would have fit Tighter and you would not have had to have it run all the way through and cut it and put a wedge
Good advice although the wedge is still preferred to keep it from working it's way apart.
You want a wedge or a tapered handle (flared above the top of the hammer head), no matter how snug the fit it's gonna work loose once you start using it unless you have it wedged in somehow.
@WungusBill-lf4iu Hmmm okay. I remember that because I'm planning on getting a couple of those Scotch eyed augers
Nice! Simple, clean, easy, properly taught. This is a good video!

Cringe
Time it took you to type that you could've typed in "auger drill bushcraft" into google 💀
If only you had typed Auger tool into google instead of YT replies lol...
Every man’s tool
Here is another tip for if you use green wood:
Figured out a way to make sand hot above a fire, this can be done in some kind of container, then stick the handle in there for a bit and this will dry it. Then DONT DO THIS TO THE HAMMER HEAD! When the handle is dried out it’ll nos shrink anymore so it won’t shrink itself lose, when the hammer head dries around the handle it’ll get a stronger grip on it.
So to clarify:
Heat sand
Dry the stick in that hot sand
Put the now dry stick in the still green hammer head
And continue the rest of the steps like the wedge and sawing the head of.
I hope this helps someone
I have the same settler's tool. Super handy for hammers, shelters, chairs, stools...all kinds of things. I most recently made a couple of hobo hand reels from birch with mine. Also, I really like that you mentioned using a knife rather than the eyelet on the tool as it tends to get stuck.
I honestly don’t care what he’s making or what it’s called! It’s the fact that he’s resourceful & outside in nature that’s the best part - & he happens to have the tolls to use!
Thanks Sonia! 🤝🏼🤝🏼
when you have uncommon tools with you, that’s NOT being resourceful.
Would rsther fimd a rock for all my hammer needs
Nailed it.
Ah you see, It's only really called a "Hammer" if it's made in the Ham region of England, otherwise these are just called "Sparkling Clubs"
‘Swings Entire Earth’
Another way to go about it is with a log about as thick as your forearm cut with a saw about half and inch to an inch into the log about 4 inches frim the edge all around it, then baton your knife or use an axe from the oppsite end from where you made your saw cut again around the same distance from the end to match up with the depth of your saw cut and remove material this will create your handle making it all one piece, its better to remove less material from the edge to start with as you can always take it off but never put it back on.
Bare in mind if the log you used to do this has a natural split in the log the mallet/hammer can split apart (this is very common with more brittle wood like yew) as the wood seasons but for a quick and easy one piece mallet/hammer it will do the job of most tasks
I like the idea for when I'm with my kiddo. ❤
Have fun!

I'm scrolling through all your videos... brother this is amazing content 👏... I've learnt sooo much ... so many tricks... I'm very appreciative... thank you for this channel 🙏
also you can drill 1/2 - 3/4's of the way through the big log, and pound a handle into that hole with a slot and wedge already at the end of the handle you are inserting. as you install the handle, it pushes in the wedge and locks it into the piece.

Oh!!! So handsome ❤❤😊😊
You should rotate the wedge 90° from how you did it here that way you won't split the wood even if you really drive it in real hard
Future drops- simplest way to make table you just need CNC..
CNC might be difficult to backpack with. the saw, auger, and new mallet might be better in the woods.
Actually the simplest way to make a table is to chop down a big ass tree and flatten the stump

Eustace Bagg would be proud of your mallet
1) this hammer is way too large for regular camp use, you'll be tired in no time
2) the handle will break off sooner or later
3) drilling a hole, requiring another specialized and heavy tool to carry, seems unpractical for long hiking
I would much rather find a piece of wood with a solid branch. It is already firmly attached to the trunk. Cut it and you're done in no time.
You can decide how big to make it, how long to make the handle, how heavy to make it.
You can shape it up over time depending on your use for it as well.
Glad to see your finally getting some recognition
Thank you Chase! Working on it my friend. 🤝🏼🤝🏼
Thanks for the Rust tutorial.
That auger bit is pretty great for making a rocket stove from a log .
Definitely!
Amazing how you drilled a perfectly straight hole all the way through a stump twice the diameter of the length of your auger bit.
And just like that, the Sledge-O-Matic, is born!
The bit that you used to make a hole in the wood was shorter than this wood's diameter so how did you do the hole all the way through?
A video that make sense. And I like that.
Thanks for the feedback. It helps me improve.
... suddenly I wanna go into the woods and try to make one of these... just because I can 😅
An Just Like That! You Can Pretend You Are Thor! Lol
I worked as a helicopter logger for years, we would find a log about the size of your stump there with a decently straight limb on it and buck it off with the saw, youve got yourself a wooden hammer for wedges in just a few seconds 🍻
I would suggest putting the wedge the other way, that is, perpendicular to the grain. That way, the wedge will not be trying to split the log.
Nicely done, although I wouldn’t consider it a hammer. As a bricklayer, my professional opinion is you made a mallet. Mallets are used in a similar way to a hammer only made out of soft materials. I.e. wood rubber certain plastics. Hammers are typically made out of metals like copper or alloys like steel.
How neat is that!!
👍 An excellent and amazing video. Wooden hammer it is. We highly appreciate your effort.

Also, Shadow of Mordor was a great action game with a cool nemesis system thats raved abit to this day.
I like the idea, but it would have been nice to get a little peak at both ends of the handle. But I’ll take your word for it.
Damn thats a big hammer. Thor would be jealous
Badass mallet! You could totally cut that kerf deeper for a more complete and permanent contact inside the eye of your wood mallet.
Good point!
Absolutely a necessary camp/survival tool. The best is to forge your own. Either way, critical to build quality structures and tools.
Feels like the notch for the wedge would be better done before you insert the handle so you can get more wedged surface
Now i can craft buildings thx
Looks like a starter hammer for a young Thor!
Enjoyed this well done.

First tip is be sure to bring a knife, two saws and an auger if you want a hammer. If that is too much trouble for you, just bring a hammer.
@@The_Red_Squirrel Normally I have an axe, two knives and a folding saw when I am out and about- the back of the axe is what's normally used if I do any hammering, but I would like to try crafting a hammer like he did while I am sitting around the fire.
So cool!
The green handle will shrink when it dries out and the wedge should be dried wood, to stop shrinkage.
That was petty rad actually
Only the worthy shall wield the hammer and get the power of Justin 😆
He's a natural..
Nice work man.
Not only that but if you started from top of tree you’ll have 200 hammers of varying sizes for every possible occasion.
OKAY I LOVED THAT! That is not what I was expecting but I'll take it 😂
🤝🏼🤝🏼
Heat treat your handle first to draw moisture out (pot of sand over fire) then it won't shrink and loosen in the head.
Even forest huts need decorations
You just made every man wanna do this now
What I would have done slightly differently is, instead of cleaning flush to the hammer, leave about 1 cm of material so it stays on a little better.
not me thinking he was going to use the WHOLE ASS TREE STUMP as a hammer head
Looks like the level 1 weapon you get when you play one of those fantasy games
