    Thank you for this great video. Talking about water, I used it in the past to detect vacuum leaks and it is easy, safe, and a successful humble method. However, I have met more than a couple technicians who said to me not to use water because it is going to get sucked down into the combustion chambers. What I said to them was that even if there would be a few drops of water in the combustion chambers, the compression ratio is not gonna be affected that much and no damage is gonna occur due to using water for checking a vacuum leak. I am actually impressed by the way you check and test vehicles' performance issues. You are in control of both, the simple method and the very advanced methods to find and pin point the root cause of engines performance problems.
    God bless you and God bless your good work.

    Legend. Had something similar wrong with my car. Fuel trims were ridiculously high while under load but it was fine at idle. Checked for a vacuum leak using this method but no joy. Watched your video on MAF readings etc. and found out I had a bad MAF sensor. Keep up the great work Paul, definitely going to sign up for your premium videos.

    Already used the water bottle to help a buddy with a preOBD2 (no scan tool) 4 banger to find a vac leak. It died on startup and when it warmed up it missed horrible at idle, but ran decent revved and had a strong gas smell at the tailpipe. He thought I was crazy when I told him what I was going to do with the water bottle. He stopped giving me funny looks when the motor died as soon as the water hit a vac line connector on the intake. Cut an inch off the line and it ran fine after it relearned the trims.

    If any doubt the water method. Paul ain't lyin. I have an 06 Mercedes E350 in here right now. There PCV system is like the BMW's. A bunch of crappy rubber hoses that have to contain full engine vacuum. If as Paul always says u go OBD ll global and look at STFT then spray a fuel source u will quickly find the leak. Or, get out the spray bottle and listen. It works fantastic. Found the problem in 5 min

    The most confusing things about fuel trim is the jargon. When the computer boosts injector time to add fuel, it is normally in response to a lean situation. When looking at fuel trim you're seeing the response, adding fuel. Of course the cause is a lean signal from O2 sensors. So it's a lean situation even though more than usual fuel is being delivered.

    Hello. 2003 Mitsubishi 3.8L V-6, 220,000 trouble free miles. Fuel economy is where it should be.
    LTFT 1&2 are +12.5% at hot idle. But goes to 0% and stays there when revved to 2,500 rpm.
    STFT 1&2 are 0% at hot idle. When extra fuel is sprayed on identified leak of intake manifold (leaking o-ring, I used smoke to find) the STFT immediately goes to -6 and then returns when the extra fuel is burned off.
    Could this intake air leak thats affecting both banks cause the truck to go into a limp mode, giving me these codes?
    P0335
    P2135
    P0340
    Also, why does LTFT go to 0% when under load? Thanks!

    I'm gonna have to build me one of them thar water bottle diagnostic tools. Certainly alot cheaper than my Maxisys was ... :)
    My buddy owns a '96 Tahoe that defeated me a few years back. Was a no-start - he went out one day, and it wouldn't start. Threw a junkyard computer in and it fired right up ... on 6 cylinders. We played the parts-changing game (bad bad bad ...) and $1,000 later, I felt the slightest improvement, but still a dead miss. Now that I've been watching you, Eric O., Ivan, and ETCG, I know what I need to do to get a handle on that thing. That truck has been eating at me ever since! I don't like defeat, lol. Now that I've got a Maxisys and a back-probe kit for my meter, I think I may have hope of getting this thing hitting on all 8. Going to try the newfound knowledge out on it at some point. THANKS for the great videos!

      I actually just found this out last week! I finally have a scan tool capable of reading the VIN off the ECU ... and lo and behold, it came off a '96 S10 Blazer 4.3! I suspected this, but couldn't prove it. That junkyard really ripped me off.
      We ended up finding a guy on eBay out of OH that reflashes used ECUs to the VIN you email him. $90. Should have this thing actually running correctly for the first time in 5 years by this weekend. :)

    Great Video...Was driving my 2002 Escalade across TX and noticed LTFT + 13 to 18 % at light loads while cruising, both banks. While STFT was about 0% I did get a P0440 Evap fault that morning so that's why I was checking it. Also had to replace front bank 1 o2 a few weeks ago for a burned out heater circuit. I cleared code and it didn't come back. At idle Short & LTFTs are normal + or - 3%. This doesn't seem like a typical vacuum leak with readings normal at idle. Any ideas ???

      Update started with fuel delivery. Found fuel pressure a little low at 45 psi at idle. Noticed pressure dropped off to zero 2 minutes after key off. Pinched return line held pressure. Replace regulator and correct that plus gained 3 psi more at idle. Test drove saw some improvement in LTFTs. Cleaned MAF test drove and LTFT dropped after driving about 10 minutes. Plus improved acceleration and idle. Thanks!

      @@BlueEyeTableRockLake Your 2 comments have perhaps helped me figure out what's going on with my 2007 chevy van, 4.8 L V8. It has a couple issues; getting codes related to O2 bank 1, sensor 1 as well as having LTFT on both banks at 25% (bank 1) and 18% at idle. STFT numbers are good. Also, the other three O2 sensor values and behavior look normal. When i rev it up and hold it for a minute or two the LTFT numbers drop off a little but not much. At first i was thinking it may have a vacuum leak but now beginning to suspect a dirty MAF. I will explore that. Am i correct in saying that a dirty MAF will cause a lean condition that the computer will then compensate for by adding (LTFT in high + range) fuel? I think i've got that figured right but if i'm off the mark i'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has better grasp of this subject than me. I'm still learning about all this stuff which is new territory for me and my diy journey.

    It's dangerous to use water like that. I've already seen a guy bend a connecting rod by doing a test like that. I think it's more safe to use intake cleaner if you don't have smoke machine. Just my opinion... Except that, good vid on fuel trim...

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 лет назад +1

      No it is not. I've been doing it for 15 years, on hundreds and hundreds of cars and trucks. And it is definitely NOT "safer" to use a flammable source. Ever have one intake backfire on you when spraying a flammable source? If you have, you would rethink what you are suggesting.
      What was the guy doing that bend a connecting rod? Dumping it directly into the intake? Seriously, I'm not being a smart ass, I really want to know. Thanks!

    • @crifaphil
      @crifaphil 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, you're rigth about the intake cleaner... It's not more safe for the worker, it's more safe for the engine.
      The story about my co-worker is the following. He suspected a injector seal vacuum leak on a Volvo 850. By adding water again and again, because it was not absolutely sure about her diagnostic, he eventually caused A hydrolock, and he bend a connecting rod... I know, he probably put to much water, but I think is a risky procedure.
      And I absolutely not want to be a smart ass... Lol !
      Being myself a teacher in automotive mechanics, I'm really impressed about all you're video and diagnostic logic....

    • @cojones8518
      @cojones8518 8 лет назад +1

      Well, I wouldn't advise throwing a bucket of water straight into the throttle body unless you want to rebuild the whole motor. You'll likely bend the pistons if it's running or cranked with water in it (look up hydrolock) :) Small amounts are fine even in the intake because it gets turned into steam in the cylinders. Everything else on a motor except inside the distributor cap tolerates water pretty well. As far as I know the alternator doesn't care about water and I've never had a problem with them getting wet.

    Hi Paul; what will make a 1.6 four banger(daewoo/chevy nubira-2001) go into open loop above idle (1000 and above) ONLY when stopped? (closed loop ok at idle,nice swing of the o2 sensor); as soon as you rev it past idle speed, boom, oxy sensor pegs at ~.85V; this w/the car stopped,ONLY; slightest load on the engine,and closed loop returns: for instance,its enough to turn on the A/C and the high beams,and it´s ok;; ok also when the car is moving; it´s always a problem at the emissions inspection; been driving (actually,the other way around,lol) me mad for 2 years now,all sensors give good values(temp,map,tps,tried a few o2s); no codes; the car was converted to lpg,does it running gasoline or lpg;it will also stay in closed loop if i create a VERY SMALL leak on the vac.hose to the MAP; have an adjustable 50 cent plastic fish tank airline controller connected to it with a plasticTee, messes up the idle a very tiny bit,but it works;
    When it goes open loop,the scanner says:"Open loop due to load or decceleration"; neither of these beeing factual; none of the o2 sensors i tried were originals; they were from bmw,jaguar,etc,spliced into the nubira wiring.

    I need some help please and I don't ask for help very often. I have a 1998 GMC 5.7, have a lean code on both banks come up, I have smoked, sprayed chemical and water bottled; no leaks found. Sometimes the light will go out and stay off for a while like the other weekend after the light went off I drove 360 plus miles no light until I got 1 mile from home then here it comes on again. Basically at idle numbers run st 0.08 to 2.3 and lt runs 16-27. Steady 2000 rpm lt will drop to around 16. Additionally I have changed out the maf sensor from another identical truck system and cleaned both. MAP sensor was also exchanged. At first I looked at the trottle body maf cover gasket for it seemed loose seal so I couldn't find a new one at the local parts store so I put a heavy dose of form a gasket 2 around that until I find the issue. I just checked the o2 sensor readings and all four readings of volts move up and down 0.10 - 0.900 but at 2000 rpms bank 2 downstream sorta sits at 0.110 at idle it responds more. Thanks for any help!!!

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  5 лет назад

      First test, what are your upstream O2 sensors reading at WOT?
      They should both be full rich (800mv plus, flat-line)
      This will be our fuel delivery test.
      After this, I may want you to check this for an internal vacuum leak. We will talk about this after the O2 WOT test

    • @daco8252
      @daco8252 5 лет назад

      Thank you for your response! I now have to apologize because I had a good Innova scan tool on loan so instead I now have a crappy cheap one and trying to get you that number will not be accurate now, for it apparently can't receive or process data fast enough and about the time you start to get a 2000-2500 rpm reading it shuts down on me, but best I can read in an intense o2 reads less than 800mv but seems to be worst on bank 2. I did see a reading of around 695.Neither bank holds the higher 800mv though. At idle both banks will move up and down to the 800mv. Far as fuel regulator I installed a new one and cleaned injectors last year. Another note: vehicle will sometimes buck mostly seems underload on the interstate then smooth back out, it's rare occurrence. I checked the IAC today, it's working okay. Motor runs great except for the codes. If you need more accurate numbers I probably can get them Monday. This morning with engine cold I poured 2 litters of water on intake and fuel port, no problems showed up. Sorry again. @@ScannerDanner

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  5 лет назад

      Do this test during a test drive (allows more time at WOT) (also, you only need to wind out 1st gear, no need to take chances with speed) and try to limit the amount of data parameters you are looking at. This speeds up the data a ton on some tools.

    • @daco8252
      @daco8252 5 лет назад

      OK Here is the lucky reading I came up with: bank 1 900v bank 2 890v. At a warm engine idle warming up to 192 degrees or so this is the numbers no trottle up....stf1 0-2.3 ltf 9.7-14.7 Bank 2 few points lower on ltf. Thanks @@ScannerDanner

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  5 лет назад

      This is at WOT? Just an FYI, fuel trim numbers are irrelevant when you are at WOT as the oxygen sensors are being ignored.
      If these O2 readings you gave me are at WOT, then this means you do NOT have a fuel delivery issue causing your lean condition faults. On to the internal vacuum leak test.
