Watching Jon slowly descend into seething madness over the course of two hours was a Christmas present I didn't know I wanted, but I so glad to experienced. RIP Jon's santiy.
Actually annoyed with Jon in this game. He's paid to play the game but then refuses to do anything on most of his turns. As a public figure and community leader of his town, he should be doing more.
The only time I ever played Citadels in my life, I also got John Gracied. 4 in a row assassinations. I feel for Jon. I know his plight. That is what I call "justifiable rage".
It feels like its a big problem that could just be solved by giving someone a protection from being assassinated if they are killed last round. For a game like this losing 2-3 turns is devastating.
I had a similar situation on my only game - played against seasoned players, got assassinated at least 4 times. Can't say it made me desperate to play the game again afterwards, but now it's been enough time I might give the game another go now.
Anyone else hoping we get “Welcome to Board Game Club, where the first rule of Board Game Club is never sit cross-legged with your daughter.” for a future intro??
what animal shall offer the most coin, because beavers have eaten the most monetary value, if badgers stopped humping the priests from graceland, however finances may accrue, don't count chickens

So I’ve tried to work out the odds of Jon being assassinated in 5 of the last 6 rounds. There’s a 6/8 (75%) chance that someone other than Jon picks the assassin card, then there’s a 1/7 (14%) chance that assassin then picks Jon’s character. That gives a rough 1/10 (10.7%) chance that on any given round Jon is assassinated. The percentage chance of that happening 5 times out of 6 is therefore 0.00751% or 1 in 13,307… so sadly for you Jon I don’t think your historic run did come up in play testing but I totally understand your unravelling now.
Depending on how you choose to count it's a bit higher than that - Jon deliberately avoided picking the assassin, so we could say it was in play 6/7 of the time, and if I recall correctly, both Carley and Sully knew the discarded card and neglected to pick it each time, so they had a 1/6 chance of hitting Jon. That gives us a 1/7 overall chance each turn and a 0.0314% or 1 in 3,178 chance of happening at least 5 out of 6 turns. But even being generous with the math, it's still ridiculously unlikely.
It's not a game of chance at all though. Jon choosing to send Laurie only the assassin when Laurie was in the lead pretty much guarantees Laurie would assassinate the warlord. There would be no sensible action for Laurie other than to kill the warlord when he was handed the assassin as the last player with the best districts.
When choice is deliberate, and therefore not every choice is just as likely and/or how likely a choice is isn't quantifiable, calculating probability is of course impossible
To comment on Carley's confusion about why the Warlord can target an assassinated Bishop: the assassinated character is supposed to be skipped in the role call, therefore that card cannot be revealed, so a face-down Bishop can't protect their city.
They were playing the 2016 (not 100% sure, maybe the 2021 Revised edition) version. As Carley stated in the original (that is 2000) version the rules didn't allow the Warlord to destroy Bishops' districts even when he was assassinated. Probably that was the reason why they updated that rule. I remember picking Bishop almost every time since then my city was safe.
King Sullivan “The Assassin King” King By day, he wears a mighty crown directly on his face. The value of satsumas has increased at quite the pace. By night, though, he’s a ninja, with his funny, floppy hair. Karate chopping, ninja stars, King Sully doesn’t care.
* Jon's "I'm not going down without a fight!!!" followed by Carley assasinating him instantly, and Blair's subsequent "Dammit. I lost my turn. *snap*" are both really underrated parts of this episode
''What animal shall offer the most coin, because beavers have eaten the most monetary value, if badgers stop humping the priests from Graceland, however finances may accrue, don't count chickens.'' - the first rule of Board Game Club
The answer, of course, is "badgers as long as they aren't humping priests, since chickens don't count and beavers destroy whatever the most monetary value is, assuming the animals mentioned are the country's currency".
Jon getting sniped from every direction is the truest representation of Citadels gameplay. Being fully shut down by every assassination attempt no matter how hard you try to hide is a quintessential experience that everyone who's played this game can relate to.
Almost every BGC i think Sullivan is the MVP (of comedy not of the game) but this episode that crown 100% goes to Jon. I have been in absolute tears thanks to him.
Man, what a string of bad luck for old Pokerface John, but he handled it like a champ. He's a stone hearted player, that one. Tom could learn a thing or two from him. Seriously, episode of the year. ^_^
Jon bravely giving his life several times so the other players could win, truly a hero. This episode was bloody hilarious, this is what makes BGC fun to watch, the gang literally just vibing, having weird conversations and mercilessly tearing their friendship apart on a weekly basis.
Extended is 40 minutes longer and definitely worth it! Poor Jon. That's really terrible luck. Also very happy seeing Blair and Rosie back. Been a while.
Somebody spiked the coffee this game. Jon started at 'manic' and then pulled the entire board down into straight-up madness. This much laughter was, in fact, a lovely addition the the season~
Even without Jon losing his shit, this was already my favourite video on the channel. Non-stop laughter all the way through. Thank you guys for sharing your amazing personalities and laughter with the world.
You know what's funny, in the turn starting at around 27:55, when the bit was Adam going for Sully. By picking Architect, a role which he would've known was already picked or discarded, and therefore a role Sully can't have picked, he therefore can't have tried to steal from Sully. Love remains strong, that is, if Adam did this on purpose. Food for thought
So, similarly to what happened to Jon, we started running a different lineup using the alternative roles: Thief, Wizard, King, Bishop, Merchant, Navigator, Diplomat, and Queen. (Running 2-9). You avoid any of the roles that make a player lose a turn. You might lose your money or a card, but there are some ways to get more money back in a turn, and the game runs smoother overall.
Yeah, having cards that skip you a turn with absolutely no upside is really frustrating design, especially when you can't chose the player. You end up accidentally punching down at the bottom player.
Also if you DO in fact start to play strategicly, you basicly always cancel out a single role of the game! You know that the warlord is dangerous, so you will allways kill that guy - might as well not have that card in the game either. The Architect? Sure, slay him and halt fast progression, why have the card in the game at that point? The odds that a single player will be chosen multiple times in a row may be slim at such a table size, but it is possible and still not soim enough to be considered rare. I think this game has an awesome concept, that works perfectly holds up as a concepts but quickly starts tononly barely hold itsrlf together after a single session of it actually being played. Sure, its fun as hell to play, but if you always get skipped or lose money, if its always you, you kinda loose the fun very quickly
SPOILER: I was going to say that Jon dug his own grave that one round by passing the Assassin to Laurie while picking the card Laurie most likely would want to assassinate, but then Jon got assassinated five other times throughout the game and I guess there isn't more to say than "sorry, dude". It was hilarious that the Bane of Jon's Existence, Carley, got him three times even when she didn't mean to. Also, Kudos to Sully. He scored 29 points on five cards, an average of almost six points per card which is just bonkers.
1:06:51 Adam just brought back so many memories of being dragged to Catholic Mass as a child... The urge to not reply "And also with you" every time someone says "May the force be with you" cause near physical pain at times. Lol
I want a rematch of this, for Jon’s sake. His meltdowns are fun to watch, but I legitimately felt bad for him after the fourth assassination. Also, this reminded me a lot of the game Mascarade.
@@grog3514 once you’ve played enough and know the ins and outs, it isn’t random at all.
