Honestly, the game is even scarier than the full on horror games I've played.
Just because you get scared when you least expect it. In horror games, you tend to expect to get jump scared, in Ready or Not that happens only very rarely, but when it happens I shit my fucking pants

    • @knosse

Also, the fact that my first ever experience with RoN was playing Twisted Nerve at 1am in coop with one friend is probably the reason why this game always felt kinda like a horror game to me lol

"Given the graphic nature of the game and the gritty realism it portrays, the game is for mature audiences. We will also strongly recommend that people who have experienced personal traumatic events from criminal violence, hostage situations or terrorism refrain from playing. At its core, the game honors the work of dedicated law enforcement officers across the world and in no way intends on glorifying cowardly criminal acts."
The fact that the developer basically said "If you've experienced anything similar in your life, we recommend you don't buy our product." says a lot about them.

It may well be that was how they intended to direct their digging without a very solid plan, and without supervising them too much. You could probably get them tweaked out of their mind and go "Yeah find the bugs, find the drain" and then go topside to keep cooking. This game once scared me so badly it sort of injured me... A year ago I had a shoulder tendinitis and at the time I had just gotten my first pc and Ready or Not was the only game I owned. I was off work for almost a week (unrelated to the injury) and pretty much only played Ready or Not. My injury wasn't bad , it only hurt during and after physical efforts at first. But at some point while playing Ready or not I got jump scared really badly. And I flinch in a really weird way which completely destroyed my shoulder. The pain was one of the worst I felt in my life. And it was now constant. It was so bad I had to get physical therapy for it and due to the high amount of work I did during the weeks following the injury, it took me a while to not feel pain on a daily basis and to this day , I still occasionally feel pain in that shoulder. 💀

imo the wide stipulation that games should be an escape from reality is bs. It can't be art or impactful unless it connects back to reality, and generally a game that impacts you or you learn something from is one that connects back to reality. other games are really a waste of time in the grand scheme of things because you could always be doing something else more productive, like a hobby

@@jonfletcher4811 While I don't quite argue, it'd be incorrect to say that gaming isn't a hobby in and of itself. So long as you have fun and don't hurt anyone real, that's what's important. We aren't meant to be assembly lines who gauge our worth purely on how much we can 'produce'.
Besides, a lot of folks _do_ make creative stuff, or get creative in general in games. Modders, map makers, lobby hosts who make things interesting.
The whole point of a hobby is that it makes you happy and lets you relax.

As a fan of Lovecraftian horror and things like True Detective, Ready Or Not has really fascinated me. This is one of the stories that feels like it could be part of the mosaic constructed by someone who uncovers a cosmic horror (like the story of Inspector Legrasse raiding the cult in Call Of Cthulhu).

Horror is not personal, we're all afraid of the same things, it's just that we have different Fear DLCs in a way of saying

Horror isn't a personal subjective thing, and with that said

I didn’t play Ready or Not until after I became a father to a girl. Seeing what had been done to Molly made my blood boil… none of the suspects walked away from that mission.

I LOVE twisted nerve. The combination of tight suburban combat and near pitch black darkness in some areas makes it one of my favorite maps period. Maybe I’m just a fan of SWAT ops with nods but I just find it fun. And of course the horror aspect makes it all the better

As it panned to the kid convulsing, i felt so much dread and i had to look away to stop myself from crying. This moved me so much more than the school shooting level. I feel sick to my stomach thinking of someone overdosing a child without second thought. It makes me wonder if theres a way to save her before they do it in the level?

I absolutely despise how all you can do for Molly is inform TOC of her status and location. She is clearly overdosing and will not survive the wait for paramedics. Not a single officer is carrying Narcan despite knowing what they were walking into.

For anyone who doesn’t know another thing that makes ready or not a way scarier game is the fact that all of the missions are based off or loosely inspired by real SWAT events I remember hearing that the development team actually consulted retired SWAT members and asked about their experiences so they could get the game as accurate as possible

  • @SomeKrieger

Ngl the scariest VR game that has no horror elements goes to Blade and Sorcery imo. I’ve been playing it for 2 years now, and only after The End Update has it become slightly less scary. At most, it has elements of brainwashing, genocide, and abuse of substances comparable to Bioshock except replace Adam with Crystals. There is one place however that has a disturbing amount of lore on it. Greystone. An island between the northern lands and The Eradan Kingdom. An island decorated by the bodies of thieves, murderers, terrorists, pirates, etc built up over thousands of years. And at the very core of the place, lie things that were once human. But gameplay wise, B&S isn’t horror. But since before 1.0 I’ve always had a feeling of being watched, much like in Gmod. Even now in 1.0, I still feel like I’m being watch when I go through the outposts. Not only that but some of the notes left around from previous inhabitants have described the player like some kind of demon, butchering entire outposts like it’s nothing.
