  • Alto Choir Practice. "Verlieh uns Frieden", Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), composed Verlieh uns Frieden and several other works in 1831 after a visit to the Vatican. The text is from a prayer by Martin Luther. "Verleih uns Frieden" ( "Da pacem, Domine", "Grant us peace in our time, O Lord" ) was composed during his Roman stay where he consulted the Palestrina scholar Giuseppe Baini and examined a library rich in Italian polyphonic music. Mendelssohn's setting is melodic and the ultimate convergence of all vocal parts. The piece pays homage to the tradition of a Bach chorale, and the Mendelssohn style of expressive accompaniment places this work firmly in the realm of Romanticism, and gives this "prayer for peace" its deeply passionate spirit.
