  • Are you about to throw away the carpet offcuts? Don't! Making doormats from carpeting remnants left from house decorating projects is a very easy and quick job. Not only will it aid in reducing the amount of debris tracked into your home, but saves you money over store-bought alternatives.
There is a few ways to finish the doormat edges to stop them from unravelling. You can go for a carpet binding tape /strip, but because my carpet was synthetic I just melted the edges. If you decide to this, be very careful, though. The good news is some carpets don't need any binding, they simply don't fray at all.
So if are looking for the idea what to do with your unwanted old carpet or some remnants forgotten in the loft, watch my video to see how to turn them into a useful doormat.

Using this method I collected 11,873 small off cuts of carpet and managed to carpet my entire house, including the walls, windows and ceiling. Well... OK, 1 offcut to carpet the boot of my car for muddy dogs!!! Thank you.

Note to anyone watching this - it will only with with synthetic fibers. Most carpets are synthetic, but you'll want to melt a small piece of it first to make sure it doesn't catch fire (which is what a natural fiber will do).

How long it will last this way? Does it seal the seam permanently? Or do you have to do it periodically as it starts to fail again?

We don't have a gas stove, so ended up using a torch. 😆

I just moved into an apartment about 2 weeks ago and I just noticed that the bottom of my recliner is digging into the wooden floors and so I need to get a piece of carpet to stop any more damage

Nice video, but it's better if you talk us through each stage rather than play background music.

Where do you get the backing material? What is it called? I love this idea! Thank you!

I've made the doormat of carpet offcuts which I had after carpetting the house.
In UK it's possible to buy cheap offcuts or samples in the carpet / flooring shops.

What's the backing shown @ the 2:23 mark?

Other types of backing. They will not fray when trimmed. I had to sunbathe mine.

I was this thinking how annoyed I would be if you were just going to show cutting the carpet in a straight line and sticking to the groove, :) I was hoping for sewed edge, but this might work?..

Holy smoke 💨 I’d end up with a house fire if I tried this , think I’d better get a needle and thread 🪡 on the go . [ my hands aren’t what they used to be , I might ask for assistance ] Otherwise, it’s a great idea 😊
