  • We got issued a winter weather advisory for a snow storm in the area so I headed out with my trusty tarp and the hot tent for a winter camp in plenty of snow and even some freezing rain later in the evening

    The tarp being weighted down by the snow.... I had to LOL.... reminds me of the time I went during a horrendous rainstorm! The tarp I'd put up as a "porch" where I'd step out of my tent.... I'd used a tall stick to keep the center up so the rain would drain off. Sometime during the night in the high winds... the stick fell down! Come morning.... there was sooooo much rain gathered in the tarp that it had sagged down in front of the tent door and I could barely get out! Had to scootch on my belly while pushing up what had to be enough water to fill a small pool to manage escape!!! Took me at least 30 minutes to manage my way out.... almost gave up at one point and cut a "new door" in the tent lol..... it wouldn't be fun if it wasn't an adventure lol Merry Christmas to you and your family :)

    Your stovepipe is a little short. It really should go higher than the treetops in order to get a much better air draw from the stove. It would also help to keep less smoke from entering the tent when you open the loading door. Am always glad to help with useful information.

    • @asmith7876

    Amen to tarp camping! Gotta love it. The first time I went winter camping I abandoned the tent, setting up a tarp shelter near the fire. I was warm and enjoyed viewing into the clear cold 4 degree Fahrenheit night. Got up a couple times to stroke the fire but I considered that worth the effort as the view of the nighttime stars at 8500 feet was outstanding in winter.

    Enjoyed your ‘hot tent” philosophy towards the end, i.e., you go to the woods to be AMONG the woods, not in an enclosed box. There are some alternatives, as you probably know: Being a former wilderness backpacker, I like to do day-hikes from the campsite so not so stuck inside the tent. I’ve also started fishing (thanks to my expert son-in-law) as another activity to liven up the woodsy experience.

    I've found that not splitting every piece of wood is a good way to keep the stove going at night. A ratio of 3 to 4 split wood pieces to every 1 medium log works for me (and one 'big bertha' to put in just before bedtime). Get the damper settings just right and there are ample embers to get it going again in the morning

    • @brookeggleston9314
      @brookeggleston9314 Год назад +1

      Oh my yes!! Getting the hang of the damper will work wonders, and I second your advice regarding the size of the wood. Also, a CO detector let's one sleep soundly, without fear of sleeping *too* soundly!

    take a log in your left hand, and line the axe on the center. Then bring all the log and axe down sharply together as one, to split wood. Then twist the blade to pry apart the wood. Don't try to cut wood with an axe like you are doing because the axe shears away if you miss the wood.

    Eyup, Rob, mi owd Yawksher mukka!
    When you first went to the states were you surprised by the volume of snow in places like Tug Hill, the Catskills and the Adirondacks?
    I know I was because most of New York State is only as far north as the north of Spain and the south of France. But then I went on to learn about continental weather patterns, lake effect snow and the North Atlantic Drift, etc.
    I’m curious to see if you knew much about it, or if it took you by surprise, just like my old lady who is from Southern Africa was surprised when it was light at 10:00 pm in the evening in summer in the UK, but dark at a quarter to four in the afternoon in winter when she first came here. 😂

    You did a good job Rob. I am glad to see you used the woodstove again. I thought you might have been turned off of it from your earlier experiences with it. You truly showed the reality of hot tenting tho. Getting all of the wood. Your little 15 second shots are good. See if there is a moving thing on your camera. It either records like the camera is moving... or maybe that is an editing function. Thank you for going out and enjoying the great outdoors... and sharing that experience with us. You have a good Christmas. Jim.

      Thanks Jim!! I figured I would give it another try, like I say it is good for getting yourself dried out after a long day in the wet and cold so I like it for that. I will take a look at what you mean, I think its an editing thing
