@@FVDaudio oh that's weird? I measured the opposite. Well, not the opposite maybe, but my FetHead is cleaner then my Cloudlifter. This makes me curious. Do you have the s/n of your Cloudlifter and the s/n of your FetHead for me?
I purchased Dynamite, for 99 dollars. Great, for 4.5 months, just stopped working one day, outside the return window. Purchased a Fethead, dead on arrival, purchased another one, dead on arrival... Asked for a refund, bought a Cloud Lifter... Haven't had a problem thus far. I know it's not everyone's experience, but I think sometimes, build quality is just worth the extra penny.
I already payed 200 dollars for a pre 73 Jr, not only it can get me gain but I can also use the outpot and gain knobs to set how much color I want my voice and/or instruments to have. I don't think the 200 price tag for the Soyuz is worth just a boost in 26db with a colored outpot you can't control. Just my 2 cents.
The feel it gave the guitar is the reason for it. It's a extra add to musical applications, like the way you might by a transformer preamp or transformer microphone... I would be interested to see what happens when it's added in between both. Something even more magical or transformer optimums prime overload?
I just got a Fethead last month and I love it. It is the single most useful item that I've purchased next to my Saramonic SR-Pax2. Anyone dealing with dynamic microphones really should seriously think about getting an inline preamp. But, being a super tiny RUclips channel on a quarter shoestring budget, I would never have even thought of buying the Fethead if it was priced at $150.00 let alone $200.00. Ultimately, I guess, it's great to have any product in a range of prices however, the results must clearly justify the price tag. Is the Soyuz 33% better in quality than the Cloudlifter or 100% better than the Fethead? My budget just cannot take meh for an answer.
Soyouz sounds more like a vintage comp doing some few very light reductions. More or less the same aproaching that my Radial pro di do to my instruments. Cloudlifter just push the preamp interface a little more, but no adding nothing to the sound. Soyuz all the way.
Simple little question: after several years of use, do you still use it to get that warm sound? I was wondering if the Soyuz could compete with preamps like the Neve? I was thinking about getting the 88M interface specifically to have that analog sound.
i think it would sound awesome on a mic'd bass amp and possibly as a drum room mic since it'll smooth out the transients of the cymbals bouncing against the walls in a recording
one little addition. not only for dynamic and ribbon... but also for lav mics with a power mac i.e. sennhieser G3 evolution. does great things for them
The 2 dB rolloff in the treble is probably due to the transformer in the preamp. Overall it does seem to be producing a more vintage 1970's sound with relatively clean gain, but it's very subtle as an effect.
Hey :) Love your stuff I have learned so much, so I have a consumer question. Why would someone pay for a cloudlifter, or this new one, when you can get the DBX 286s for the same price or 50 bucks more.. Its a real question I bought the 286 because it gives me more than enough gain, and more. thanks for all you do and happy Turkey day :)
Different tools for different use cases. The 286 is a fine and functional piece of equipment, but it is large, takes up a lot of space and performs many tasks in addition to providing solid gain. Some users don't want or need all of that. Some users don't want to have another whole large piece of gear that they need to connect to power. The Soyus device reviewed here as well as the Cloudlifter, Fethead and myriad of other similar devices are also far more portable. Also, if you are using multiple microphones, you need a 286 for each mic .You'd also need a CL, Soyus or Fethead for each mic, so it comes down to cost. If you're running a studio setup with 4 microphones and want to put some sort of pre in line on all of them, 4 of the 286s or Soyus units is going to be $800. Make that $600 for Cloudlifters, and when I bought my Fetheads, they were $90 a pop, so that's $360. So economics wins for a lot of people. Lastly, with a device like the 286, the learning curve may be a bit more than some people want to take on. The added functionality; gate, compressor and such and all of the knobs that go with these functions can be daunting for many users. Let's also not forget that when using those functions, they are baked into your recording, so if the compressor is set wonky and the gate opens and closes seemingly with a mind of its own, you can't unring the bell, it's there for all to hear and nary a post production miracle is going to save it. Ultimately people need to figure out their work flow and find the solution that works best for them. I thank you, Bandrew, for the informative and often entertaining videos! You've helped influence some of my buying decisions. Cheers!
What will come first: a shootout of all the crumpled up stickers or a updated USB audio interface shootout including the ART USB Mix and some other mid-tier interfaces?

Hey Bandrew, ever thought about getting one of those sexy Earthworks mics to review? Something like a QTC 30 or an M30? Barely any information about them, and I know you’re the most reliable there is. Pretty expensive though
I have thought of it...I did so happen to get a few earthworks podium style mics, and some that are used for drums that have articulating arms for SUPER cheap at an auction. Haven't even tried them yet though.
You cannot plug this into a condenser mic. The majority of these devices block ALL phantom power and use that power for the electronics inside that provide +25db of gain. Since condensers require phantom power, these will yield the microphone unusable as the mic is not receiving any power. There is a Fethead Phantom which I believe provides a dB boost and then passes phantom power through to the mic as well. I have never tried it though.
@@Podcastage Thank you so much for the answer. My point is, I love the coloring of a transformer, it would be a dream to have something like this soyuz launcher to be in the middle of the way between any mic (condenser, dynamic, ribbon) and a interface. I don't really get the point of these devices since you can get a DBX 286s that give 60dB of clean gain and a not-so-bad processing chain for the same price
You could absolutely go that route. Some people don’t want a rack unit if they have no desire to use that processing; they just want boost to their quiet mics to run into some other preamp or interface or something.
Mics like the SM7B and Heil PR40 push that 60db gain right to the limit which can add noise the closer you get the higher end of what they do. By starting out with a 25-27db boost, you don't have to drive it so hard.
i use both the 286 and a cloudlifter and the noise (while generally only i can hear it) is very noticeable when i didn’t have the CL. since i’m live streaming, i can’t do a whole lot on the spot so every clean dB matters to me
