If you have no exposure to the subject of scales or intervals, you might want to check out my lesson Scales For Beginners at • Harmonica Scales For B... , as it lays the groundwork for the theory of how chords are constructed.
I’m playing a C harmonica in 1st position for the first half of this lesson which is the key of C, and then I switch to 2nd position, also referred to as cross-harp, so we are in the key of G for the I Want Candy riff. Any 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C will work for this lesson.
Definition of a Chord 1:07

The I chord in 1st position (C major chord) on the harmonica can be played in 3 places
First octave tabs: 123
Second octave tabs: 456
Third octave tabs: 789
The V chord in 1st position (G major chord) sounds best and is most often played:
-234
Here are the harmonica tabs for I Want Candy:
-234 -234 -234 345 -234
And with the grace notes:
Ta - Ka Ta-ka Ta ka-Ta Ta

If you made it through all of this, I want to give you a big Congratulations!! You learned how chords are built, how they are numbered, you learned the I & V chords in first position, the I & IV chords in 2nd position, and you learned an awesome riff. Great job!!!

thank you for putting your knowledge of the harmonica on the internet; for all to access the ability to master the harmonica (the greatest tool known to man kind), but unfortunately I am busy saving the lives of American citizens across the globe. Perhaps one day in my long never ending cycle of immortality I will be able to settle down and play "i want candy" on my harmonica.
I hope to see you again some day.
Great thing about harmonica is that you can play it ANYWHERE. Don't hesitate, don't wait. Start today! 😉
Very good simple and effective
Right on Larry - glad it was helpful.
I learn much here. Looks so easy
Yay! Easy it is!
Wow !!!!
Great!!!
Thanks Carlos! Glad you found it helpful.
Wow thank you .
You are so welcome!
The big advantage from numbering the notes 1-7 and roman numerals for chords is that you can then pick up any diatonic instrument in any key and then play the same song in same mouth positions as original key you first played it in. I even notate all my songs using this notation. I play irish flute with the same system. Although can't play chords on a flute. Harp is extra special in that sense. Hence the name Harmonica. The other huge advantage is you can learn the distinctive sounds of the seven note numbers and chords (99% of all songs use just these 7 notes). To then transcribe almost any song into any other key you want.
Great teach, wanna learn some songs when hanging with family around the fires of life!
Yes, Michael! That's the very best time to play! Rock on my friend. Glad you liked the vid.
Luke! Please keep going!!!

@@Harmonicacom Thank you Luke! I just happened to stumble across your video and it's obvious you have a passion for the harmonica and teaching. Thank you for what you do!
Brooham, I just went ahead and transposed this with a simple yet beautiful google extension
(take that C and make it Suitable for my G Harp)
It's weird to hear you up here in this key
AND BEST OF ALL it fits with the I and V / IV Nashville Style-e (don't need to worry about note names)
'just tell the band we're jamming in G
THANKS MAN (transpose -5)
Another enlightening and inspirational lesson. Thanks Luke. Awesome.
Right on my man. Keep on rocking. 🤙🏼
Hey Luke, not a beginner but good to see you back, still interested.
K Don - right on man. Thanks for the note, you’ll probably dig the next lesson I’m working on with Harmonica.com. Got some good intermediate Blues stuff mixed in with beginner as well. Lot’s of good stuff in the works….
Awesome video one of the best that I have found to understand chords. How do I find the gem tracks that you refer to in the video?

Pretty cool, watching a few of your vids and you're playing my harp, got that going for me, next which end to blow through?
Cool! Hole 1 on the left, hole 10 on the right. Rock and roll!
Helped me alot.,..thanks... CHI-TOWN HERE 👑 AMOR ⏳⌛😎
Glad it helped! You're in a good place for harmonica!
I really enjoyed this Luke thanks. I like the way you explain which I find easy to understand and I'd love to follow a proper course if you are gonna be the teacher. I checked the site but I only found the few videos that you uploaded. Can you give me some advice? Thanks. Enrico from Italy
Hey Enrico - thanks for your note! I’m working real hard on something big. Please stay tuned!
@@Harmonicacom Great Luke thanks...looking forward to it!
Cool. The Clave clapping rhythm is the same as the one Kuwaitis sometimes use in traditional songs.
Wow that's fascinating!!!!! Did not know that.
I'm just beginning to "pick up" playing the harmonica. So, I need to ask you how you do the "Ta Ka" bit while playing it. I hope you can explain it for us. Thank you for sharing your talent with us all. Keep the videos coming, please.
Hey Curtrice - thanks for the note! the first key is to have the deep relaxed mouth position taught here:
www.harmonica.com/how-to-play-the-harmonica-714.html
Once you’ve got that, simply say the consonants in time.
Bedankt
🙏🏼 so kind of you.
obrigado
Hi, Where in a video do you talk about how to jump from the four hole to the eight hole, back to six, then to a two accurately? How do you know where you are on the harmonica close enough to hit a whole cleanly moving from several holes over? Thanks sooo much 😊
Hey Joseph - yeah this is a great question. The trick I use it store slide slowly counting until you land on the right note, and then work on increasing the speed. Blow to blow or draw to draw is easy. If you're doing a jump AND a change in air direction I think usually change air direction before starting the slide.
You'll find that in addition to helping you find the hole, a slide on the harmonica often sounds very musical.
Hope that helps. Rock on.
Dude igrew up in the 80s what a rad first riff to learn
Sweet!! Thanks for watching.
Rock on,
Luke
Really liked this lesson, been practicing, any Skype
lessons available for feedback?
Hey Patricia - yes, I do Skype lessons, but I charge $100/hr 😳 Have you considered my Beginner to Boss course?
www.harmonica.com/lessons/
Helpful video. Just had a question. When you were explaining the 5 chord in 1st position, I got a little lost as to how that chord works for drawing on any hole between 1 and 5. Could you explain that a bit?
Sure thing. 1st position key of C, the V chord is a G7 spelled G-B-D-F (1-3-5-b7.)
On the C harmonica:
-1 = D
-2 = G
-3 = B
-4 = D
-5 = F
So, you see all of those notes are in the G7 Chord. From -1 to -5, it's 5th, Root, 3rd, 5th, b7th.
So if you play any 3 of those notes, you will be playing some part of the G7 chord.
Does that make sense?
LMK.
Aloha,
Luke
thanks ........
Mick - you’re welcome, my friend. Thanks for the note.
More awesomeness!! Question, How do you avoid accumulating air? Whenever I get a good rhythm going on this tune I end up with full lungs ,:)
Right on Wade. Glad the lessons are helping. Good question! The trick is out-gassing, meaning when you're blowing through the harp you allow air to go out through your nose at the same time so that you can get twice as much air out in the same amount of time.
And on the flip side, make sure you are NOT accidentally allowing air to come IN through your nose when you are drawing. You can confirm this by pinching your nose with one hand while you're playing.
Hope that helps!
Rock on,
Luke
Hey Luke,
How do you breathe while playing the riff? We inhale 4 times and exhale 1 time. Any advice at this stage to not turn blue 🤓? Thank you for the awesome job. 🙏🏾
Yeah, when you blow "out-gas" through your nose at the same time to get more air out.
And when you're drawing, make sure you're not letting air come in through the nose! (You can pinch your nose to confirm.)
Did you have a recommandations for harmonica holder? Tanks
The owner flex track looks comfortable. I haven't tried it yet… The Seydel gecko is pretty nice. I'm not crazy about the magnet, but I definitely like it better than the run-of-the-mill holder.
Hey, Bo Diddley! 🙂
Ya mon!
Is there a video somewhere on what positions mean? I'm lost there already.
Yeah, it's confusing at the beginning. This might help: ruclips.net/video/V2aokP8GriI/видео.html
Ok you if you are using a C harp how do you play the IV chord when you are playing straight harp ? Or it you are playing cross harp how do you get the V chord in the key of G
William - GREAT QUESTIONS!!!!!!! I’m very impressed.
Short answer: you can’t, really….
Long answer….
1st Position IV chord you can play -56 which is the root and 3rd of the IV chord. Sometimes, I’ve literally just had 2 harmonicas in my hands. In the key of C, I’d have the C harmonica and then the F so that I could play the F chord by blowing on it, lol.
2nd Position V chord you can play the -4, the -1, or the -14 octave if you know how tongue block octaves. I actually recently learned a way to get the root and 3rd of the V chord by doing a half step bend on -2 and unbent on -1 at the same time. I learned it from that harmonica.com badass, Alex: ruclips.net/video/vJYKJql3t0M/видео.html
Great lesson...I'm workin' it! Funny gag reel...lol. :))
Right on Deena! Ha, lol. Rock on.
