    thank you for putting your knowledge of the harmonica on the internet; for all to access the ability to master the harmonica (the greatest tool known to man kind), but unfortunately I am busy saving the lives of American citizens across the globe. Perhaps one day in my long never ending cycle of immortality I will be able to settle down and play "i want candy" on my harmonica.
    I hope to see you again some day.

    The big advantage from numbering the notes 1-7 and roman numerals for chords is that you can then pick up any diatonic instrument in any key and then play the same song in same mouth positions as original key you first played it in. I even notate all my songs using this notation. I play irish flute with the same system. Although can't play chords on a flute. Harp is extra special in that sense. Hence the name Harmonica. The other huge advantage is you can learn the distinctive sounds of the seven note numbers and chords (99% of all songs use just these 7 notes). To then transcribe almost any song into any other key you want.

    Hi, Where in a video do you talk about how to jump from the four hole to the eight hole, back to six, then to a two accurately? How do you know where you are on the harmonica close enough to hit a whole cleanly moving from several holes over? Thanks sooo much 😊

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  Год назад

      Hey Joseph - yeah this is a great question. The trick I use it store slide slowly counting until you land on the right note, and then work on increasing the speed. Blow to blow or draw to draw is easy. If you're doing a jump AND a change in air direction I think usually change air direction before starting the slide.
      You'll find that in addition to helping you find the hole, a slide on the harmonica often sounds very musical.
      Hope that helps. Rock on.

    Hey Luke... You have answered me on here before to day, and so i'm hoping you can maybe help me this 'once more' ?....When playing 12 bar blues there seems to be two conflicting thoughts on what chords are to be played. I know the chord progression, but some say it's the 1,3 and 5. Others telling me 1, 4, and 5. would you, if you have a minute tell me where i'm getting confused.... Thanks, and thanks for all the videos you've shared on here. They've certainly helped ME !

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  3 года назад

      Right on, I'm so glad the videos are helping, and, yes I can clarify this for you for sure!
      So a chord is a group of 3 or more notes played at the same time. The simplest chord is a triad, a 3-note chord. The notes within the chord are the root note, plus a 3rd and a 5th above that. So EACH chord is CREATED by playing Root, Third, and Fifth (1-3-5.)
      Now the root of each chord in the 12 bar blues is numbered from the major scale. So the ROOTS of each chord in the 12-Bar blues are either the 1st, 4th, or 5th note in the major scale of the same key that the blues is in.
      Does that make sense? Hey it seems like you're getting pretty deep into this stuff, you might enjoy checking out my Beginner to Boss course. Module 9 is a music theory appendix. You can see the course lessons overview here:

    Hey Luke
    I'm a beginner but I have been beginning for a couple of years now:) I have absolutely no musical background and I just don't get this I IV V cord stuff. You have no idea how many videos I have watched about this subject of 12 bar blues, cross harp and 1st 2nd 3rd position stuff. I just don't get it. Your video has come the closest to helping me understand. It did help somewhat but I am not there yet. I will watch it repeatedly and hope that one day the light bulb will go on. Thanks for trying. Any suggestions

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  5 лет назад +1

      Brian - yeah, man, you got the right idea! I call it “learning by immersion.” Just keep on listening, relax, and don’t worry. The concepts you’re seeking to understand are going to come together for you soon. Also, part of the fun of the musical journey is that there is always more to learn!

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  5 лет назад +1

      FYI: My upcoming videos will address the 12-Bar Blues and Keys and Positions. Also, have you seen Scales for Beginners? ruclips.net/video/nkUAbVIcMSw/видео.html
      Some of the building blocks in this Chords for Beginners lesson are concepts that I introduced and explained in Scales for Beginners.

    • @thoughtspiller
      @thoughtspiller 4 года назад

      1 4 and 5 just refer to the key playing in ! Example if you playing in c major the c note is the 1 chord and the second note on the c scale is d so D would be the 2 chord and same works with every other chord just different sequence of notes

    • @thoughtspiller
      @thoughtspiller 4 года назад

      Hopefully that makes sense ! The concept is all around too so same goes with guitar!

    Helpful video. Just had a question. When you were explaining the 5 chord in 1st position, I got a little lost as to how that chord works for drawing on any hole between 1 and 5. Could you explain that a bit?

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  3 года назад +2

      Sure thing. 1st position key of C, the V chord is a G7 spelled G-B-D-F (1-3-5-b7.)
      On the C harmonica:
      -1 = D
      -2 = G
      -3 = B
      -4 = D
      -5 = F
      So, you see all of those notes are in the G7 Chord. From -1 to -5, it's 5th, Root, 3rd, 5th, b7th.
      So if you play any 3 of those notes, you will be playing some part of the G7 chord.
      Does that make sense?
      LMK.
      Aloha,
      Luke

    More awesomeness!! Question, How do you avoid accumulating air? Whenever I get a good rhythm going on this tune I end up with full lungs ,:)

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  3 года назад +2

      Right on Wade. Glad the lessons are helping. Good question! The trick is out-gassing, meaning when you're blowing through the harp you allow air to go out through your nose at the same time so that you can get twice as much air out in the same amount of time.
      And on the flip side, make sure you are NOT accidentally allowing air to come IN through your nose when you are drawing. You can confirm this by pinching your nose with one hand while you're playing.
      Hope that helps!
      Rock on,
      Luke

    I have an harmonica in G and my question is: are there different chords for G and C harmonica’s? Or can I play the same chords on both?

    • @Harmonicacom
      @Harmonicacom  7 месяцев назад +1

      Same chord relationships. I-V
      Blowing C harmonica is C, drawing is G
      Blowing G harmonica is G, drawing is D
      Does that make sense?

      I just run it under the tap, hottest water that my hands can handle, both ways several times, as strong a flow as possible, and then tap against palm and blow/draw to dry. Leave it out of the case for a couple hours to make sure it dries thoroughly before putting back.
