- Today we are sharing some of the dangers of logging, and of logging with draft horses... this is why loggers wear hard hats!! Logging is one of the most dangerous jobs! It's a beautiful day logging in the Adirondacks at Paul Smith's College!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I love how Jim looks out for your safety
That's said at the altar, when Jim married Brenda !! When he promised to love and protect her !!
He likes her cooking better than his own! 😊
It's a real joy to watch Jim work. The horses are so well trained. Wonderful
👍👍👍👍👍Being an experienced logger, Jim knows when it's safer to not get on the cart as the horses pull logs on uneven ground. And his wonderful drafts are so well trained they obey his commands to pull without his being in the cart for safety concerns. Today was a beautiful glimpse of how Jim and his horses work together to stay safe. Just imagining the terrible accident had Jim been on the cart for that one log as the cart flipped over is scary to think about. The Good Lord Jesus was keeping Jim and the horses safe! Thank you Jesus🙏 The forrest is a wonderland all covered in snow! And Brenda got her lovely Christmas tree!! Brenda, I hope you will let us see your Christmas tree all decorated with lights and ornaments! Loved the video, and Lady and Bill did a superb job, as they always do.
I agree👍👍
Mrs. Brenda took the words right outta my mouth! “ What tree?! There’s lots of trees out here “ LOL…… Jim is VERY GOOD at what he does and it’s really good to watch him work his teams and get those logs out of some really weird places
Lady and Bill= beauty and power❤
It’s good to see that Jim puts all safety first
Jim it’s amazing you really know what you are doing cutting the trees down. Of course you have been doing it for many years. Thank you Brenda for recording everything you both are awesome together. Many blessings and thank you.
The horses take everything in their stride and I still like the way they take every opportunity to chomp on every green frond within reach. I loved the camera angles and explanations. Thank you.
yet Bill always gets the most tree treats,,did you see lady budge him a bit...😊
@@sueupham2519 - Yes, I saw the nudge. Always eating. I guess I would be too if every place I went there was a smorgasbord of tasty treats within a "neck's reach". No cooking or cleaning required.
I love watching Jim as he’s demonstrates what experience and professionalism are all about! The way he handles his team and thinks ahead to make the job easier are quite inspiring!
Hi Jim, Brenda, I have to tell you, I could watch you cutting trees all day! Jim, Brenda, you two are Amazeing together! Thanks again for the trip into the beautiful woods with you two! This is where i would love to be, Jim, Nova Scotia, Canada. God Bless To All!
And now you know why they call them "Widow Makers" had that been a really big branch that unfortunately might have been the case. And Jim is right now you know why they wear hard hats. been there done that myself. the mistake everyone makes is they think they will be able to react fast enough to avoid things like that. well even it Jim had looked up and seen it break off it would have hit him somewhere on his body before he got out of the way. again been there and been the recipient of those same conditions. Things like happen way faster than the human can react. Great team work JIm and Brenda. thanks for sharing. ECF
Hi Jim & Brenda, what an exciting podcast you guys have produced today. It is very clear to see that Jim has a deep well of forestry skills from which to draw, and an instinct of where danger lurks so as to avoid it. Well done you two great stuff.
Great video! Just a day in the life of logging with excellent horses and safety conscious people with lots of experience loved it! Sure hope we ge5 a Christmas caroling video with the girls again this year!
Jim is just the sweetest! ❤
Yes Jim is a sweety. Under that gruff exterior is a heart of gold .😊
Amazing job fishing the logs out of the wood lot
Jim sure knows what he is doing there in the woods .
The man has talent
I remember years ago when Jim filmed alone as you Brenda was still working... its alot safer that he's not on his own so much now. Best wishes from England UK 🇬🇧
Jim has cell phone coverage .call 911 if able. Hospital in Saranac Lake about 20 minutes away . Let's hope he never needs to use phone for that purpose . 😊
This says a lot about your horses. Such trust and so well trained.
great video,,sure was! the best video for training yet...all informative and the horses are so valuable to you guys...." that's why I wasn't on there" .... hahahaha..super Godly wisdom...( and glad for the good head gear )❤❤
glad for you both...
Great to see you back in the woods. Love how you hooked onto Brenda's greenery with out a comment. Your a better man than i am!
Skill level and wisdom a real privilege.
Wow! What a logging adventure today.Big cheers for such well trained horses staying as calm as Jim!
What I have noticed in this video is that Jim knows it doesn't always go by plan, but the 2 trees that Jim cut down, nicely done.😊
Great job felling the trees
Lady is working like she has never left a summer for a foal. Amazing horse
Oh my....
I'd give many thumbs up if I could.
It's a thing of beauty to watch Jim and his horses work.
“What tree would that be, there’s lots of trees” ~ Brenda. Lol
Thank you human team and horse teams. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year❤🎉.
That was another epic video guys! Wow! I was on the edge of my seat for this one! Lord almighty. The last look Brenda gives the camera totally resonated with me. Perfect 👍 Lololol. You two rock!!
Jim and Brenda, Thank's again for letting us in on the old tradition of logging in the forest. >>>Jim really knows how to work safely in the bush, as well as working safely with his horses. >>He makes it look so easy, which I am sure it's not. >>>Brenda, Thank You for your contribution in filming it all. >>>You are a great couple.....much respect for one-another, very nice to witness .
My dad was almost killed form a dead limb falling while logging. He heard something and looked up and the limb hit him in the face. He had to have reconstructive surgery on his face and his entire sinus cavity rebuilt. He had never had to wear glasses but after the accident he saw double without them. I pray for you and Brenda to always stay safe in the woods .
We enjoy watching your videos . Lovely day in the woods .
The woods were lovely. Jim and his horses make such a low impact on the land, it’s beautiful to watch. Brenda, thank you for a wonderful video!
Jim, you are so at home when you're logging! I never thought I'd be hooked on a logging program!!😂 I guess it's all the extras you add for content, too! 🙂 Wow, I'm so glad you had your helmet on! 😳 That branch wasn't little--especially falling from far up! Thank you, Lord! 🙌
I know the horses get a workout from pulling, but going right, left & back must work lots of muscles, too!! They are so awesome!
Thank you, too, Brenda, for all you do! ❤️
Lady & Bill did well with a tipped cart over!! 😳 Oh my!!
I am subscribed & i love your new calendar!!! 😊
Boy there's a lot of excitement in the woods!!! Blessings sent
The joys of logging! Jim it’s obvious you have learned your craft very well & trained your team accordingly. Well done.
awesome work Jim congrats on waring your helmet.
Come on people, there’s over 3,000 watching and only 900 likes. Let’s get some more likes.
Love your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and your family and the animals and Jim working the horses logging
Christmas is coming! Give Mizz Brenda a Snazzy helmet/hard hat for her trips in the woods. Enjoying going in the woods with all of you … and now Skippy, too!
This takes me way back to my childhood when my dad was a logger helps me get an idea of what a day may have been like in the woods of Arkansas the chainsaw sound reminded me of the sounds when he worked closer to home. Just four or five years old then. I watch Abby with her house restore it's peaceful and enjoyable for me to watch.
Wow, Jim that last log was a monster tipped you cart sideways, that was why you didn't ride the cart. I loved how you laid the trees where you wanted them to go. Brenda You are a great filming. Well done Human Team Jim And Brenda and Horse Team Bill and Lafy❤
YES BRENDA IT WAS SOMETHING
Cutting the tree to fall exactly where you want it to. Amazing. But then you've got those years of experience.
Still. I find it fascinating.
Well done. And thank you and Brenda for recording for us 🙏🤗☀️🌺
Hi Brenda and Jim, it's so beautiful out in the woods where Jim is Logging with Lady and Bill, Thank on the trees and on the land so pretty.
Just another day at the "office" !! Even when you roll the buggy (?) on its side !! Glad no-one was hurt !!
That part of video would make an excellent PSA commercial for the merits of wearing a hard hat.
Love Lady and Bill ! Beauty and Power and Talent at work
Jim you made me gasp when that widow maker came down. Thank you God you are alright. That tree fell just like threading a needle & getting it through the eye of the needle on first try. Brenda you must be making wreathes that your asking for bows. Thank You 👍👍👍😊
Brenda . I know you dont like wearing a hard hat in the woods , logging operation because it messes up your hair . But a hard hat with a cold weather liner , just looks right . Yes big tree top " widow makers" a hard hat is useless. Get a white one ( means boss ) on some logging sites. 😊😊😊
Lady and Bill are soooooooooo funny at sneaking some snacks from the tree limbs when they can!!!
Nice to see lady in the woods!!!!!!
man,,that is a beautiful team you got there today...lov from south alabama.
Loved the last minute of the video! Experience matters!
I love to watch you guys work in the woods!
Great video! I loved it and I really loved Brenda's look at the end!😊
Listening to Jim's verbal instructions to the horses reminded me of the rhythm of an auctioneer's chant (only slower and more relaxing!). The woods were beautifully dusted with snow. Thank you for a lovely video, Brenda, Jim, Lady, and Bill!
Great job Jim with the horses and Brenda on the video making .
Smooth operating God-given talent.
THANK GOD JIM TAKE SAFETY FIRST BRENDA I'M GLAD YOUR WITH THESES GUY'S YOUR LUCKY PLEASE BE CAREFUL ,WHILE A BIG TREE JIM PLEASE BE CAREFUL THERE IS A LOT OF LOGGING ACCIDENTS JIM WHEN YOUR HEAD HITS THE PILLOW TONIGHT YOU'LL BE OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just love your videos, that place looks just like a magical winter wonderland, Jim you're so good with the beautiful horses and Brenda you're so good with Jim hahaha sorry I couldn't resist a little joke.
love the video. Jim demestrates the need for saftey equipment is a must. Bill and Lady are such a great pair together. Well wishes to Lady for 2024 that everything goes well with the birth of her second
congratulations on lady being pregnant good video be safe jim
Very interesting to watch
ouch very good thing you had your Hard hat on, Be safe Jim
Tudo joia belezinha trabalhando
There's the physics class that you take in high school or college with all the formulas, diagrams, charts and practice problems, then there is the Applied Physics class you get watching Jim calculate the height and lean of a tree, which way to fell it to cause the least damage and calculate the angles and length of the logs so the horse team can pull it out of the woods. Amazing. Who said physics was boring or impractical! Not!
Always excited to watch another video ❤ Jim is so good in the woods always careful… the horses are so beautiful nice they got new shoes ……….your wife is so cute love her braids …..
You are amazing Jim!!!
Good job Jim, love when a plan comes together!! KEEP ON LOGGIN Be Safe
I agree with Brenda's expression after Jim's comment about the "joys of logging". Like Brenda, I enjoy the ride/walk through the woods and the horses nibbling in the "Office Lunchroom" surrounding them. The branch falling and the upset cart are disconcerting! No matter whether it is farming, logging, or sawmill tasks, it is NEVER a DULL MOMENT watching this channel! ALSO, I am amazed at the level of difficulty of work performed as well as the challenges from inclement weather as well as the sheer volume of PHYSICAL LABOR accomplished by both Brenda and Jim. I think it is very smart for the chickens to be near Brenda when the insects come to the surface as she (or the grandchildren) harvest the potatoes. Chickens are terrific farm animals. The cats/kittens must have sonar inside them to detect when to dodge the horses hooves which are almost as large in size as the "meow crew".
Bill and Lady are saying to themselves, “ what are these people doing?”
4:09 "This is a Balsam tree, really good for nothing."
4:12 Sound of Balsam trees crying.
8:37 "Wait! Wait! Could that be a Christmas tree?"
8:40 Balsam trees doing a massive eye roll.
🤔whew good day in the woods, great vid I’m ready for R&R 🤭 Jim/Brenda 👍👀
yes and a big hot soup lunch,,with some beef sandwiches...
Well that was full on, made us non loggers realise a bit how hard logging can be, well done, stay safe. from down under sweltering in a balmy 37c
This was scary but so beautiful 🤩! Glad you’re safe and it was so great seeing Lady and Bill together again!
Looks like Brenda might need her own hard hat. First time I have seen a branch come out of nowhere in ya’ll’s videos. Mercy!
I got one and really enjoy it😊
Amazing.. Those horses are so smart. God bless.. Please be safe..❤
Jim have you ever done a video on the equipment you use and why? Brand of saws, types of chains on saws, chaps, hard hat, pull chains, tires on the cart, tape measure, etc.
Yes
I am always touched by how sweet and kind both of you are to each other - you are MIRRORING the IMAGE OF GOD'S LOVE.
great work on the tree cutting job,. jim, you really know how to lay a tree down on the same spot you planned for.
Glad you had your hard hat on. Maybe it might be time to get one for Brenda too. It is a joy to watch you work, not only with the teams, but also with the chainsaw. You are a consummate horseman, and a consummate woodsman. Hat's off to you, Sir!
This is a fine video with different challenges to logging. with horses you can get into a very tight area and still skid the material
New camera? The sharpness of the images are excellent.
Maybe his work keeps him warm, but what Jim wears to keep warm would be interesting, gloves, footwear, layers, besides the hard hat. Amazing how the snow muffled the sounds.
Yes , gloves , safety boots layers , hard hat plus liner in cold weather . One peace long John underwear with rear trap door .We won't get into what Brenda wears or her daughters, but you got to love their Toques. Very cozy and not fashion conscious. Just what they need for cold up state n y weather in winter . Summer bikinis would be nice .😂
@@chips4974 I asked because I’m always interested in what keeps people warm in winter. I have never found rubber boots that are warm. I seldom find gloves to keep my fingers warm. So I ask to learn if there are boots and gloves that do the job. If it is the physical exertion, I would like to know that. The only way to learn is to ask.
A serious answer is felt lined boots with wool socks and leather mitts with wool mitts inside . Winter underwear and wool shirt plus snow pants and parka. That's what I wore in Northern Ontario scaling logs in minus 40 Celsius. Not fashonable but I was trying to survive the bitter cold , plus a warm truck parked near by also helped .Short answer buy wool .
@@chips4974 Thank you. Felt lined boots and wool socks were also my answer to cold feet. Long John’s or one piece long underwear with wool hunting pants for my legs. Heavy flannel shirt over a turtleneck and under a lined hooded sweatshirt under a parks. I had wool gloves inside lined leather chopper mittens that were off often to run the chainsaw. Topped off with a balaclava that would cover my face partway. It was hard to move in all the layers. That was many years ago.
Thanks I had forgotten about the turtle neck sweater and balaclava. Some cutters had a small campfire burning . Loved it when the Canada Jay's ( whiskey jacks) would come and take a small piece of bread from my finger tips. Always packed a little extra bread for them .Cheers
Fantastic control of your horses love what you two do thanks.
lol that last tree he called out ken and bill , good boys.
Oops 😊
Yes Sir Jim is covered, Like I said a year ago I think he is near being a Professional lol
Very good to see you are back I love to see how u all work the horses. Wish I was younger so I could learn how to do that
You and the horse’s are 1 team.
Nice video. The horses look beautiful out there in snow working. Thank you for sharing why safety is important. Brenda I don't know how you watch Jim do this with our having tons of anxiety.
Loved your video and your calendar. It took me a long time to watch where the limbs were on the side of the tree. I had 2 mback into the wany roll over because I didn't pay attention to see what side had the most limbs on it. Once you have been swatted to ground by a pine tree you learn very quickly. It cost me a chainsaw and a sprained ankle but the Good Lord was watching over me that day. I never went back into the woods without my hard hat ,chaps and steel toe boots. Jim you sure know what you are doing out there watching out for you and your team. Brenda another great video and I saw that side eye when the cart was half tipped over. God bless and keep safe. Love you both.
I love this horse logging.
That dead tree top was what you call a live demonstration lesson. Glad you’re ok Jim.

Love you guys for what you awesome ❤
It's wonderful how small amount of damage that Jim and the horses make !!! I know when we have loggers come in our woods they make a horrible mess !!!
Horse loggers are so much quieter. Just chain rattles and horse farts too listen to and chainsaw noise . Mechanical skidders make more money , faster . But not good for selective tree harvesting like Jim is doing. Horse can work in more confined spaces .😊😊😊
